Thanks Guys. I found it on my 1st outing at my 1836 Paper Mill Site. Was just under the surface. I soaked it in white vineager to remove most of the crud.

Nice knives, Blademaker. I don't have the equipment
to make full sized knives anymore, but I still make a
few minatures.

I really like this design that you made.

Thank you for the nice compliments :)
please call me Joe;)
Silversmith, that's prob one of my favorite everyday carry designs also!
miniture knives are tough making,i also enjoy making those, but i burn my fingers waaaay too much!
what would you folks look for in a digging type tool?
i seen a few searching around the net,and im still on the fence on a design that i like...
im thinking something reletively slim, maybe with a tapered blade shape, more like a wide dagger type blade maybe with some sort of chisel type tip for plunging into the ground???
any thoughts on what you guys would like to see in a digging tool?
thanks for any input
Joe

I find making miniatures are hard on the fingers too. Then people think something that took you two days to make should sell for a dollar. Do you sell any that you make? As for digging knives, here is my 30+ year old 3-in-1 knife.

The new ones aren't the same. Of all I've seen, I think the Japanese Hori-Hori knife is the closest. The blade runs the length of the handle and is scooped enough to hold dirt. It has a wooden handle, but I have built it up to make it easier to push into the ground. I have actually hammered it into rock hard ground without breaking it. I have never felt it give like it might break. I have never felt a sharp knife needs a saw type edge.

silversmith, i do sell my work sir...
i know what you mean about pricing:)

that digging knife you posted, is along the lines of what im thinking...
very dagger like
are the edges somewhat sharp, or blunt?
i like the scooped out center, i can prob get away with milling out a very wide
fuller to acheive that...
cool looking tool!
Joe

The edges are sharp. I try to keep them that way so I don't need saw teeth. They catch on everything. Just make sure the blade runs the full length of the handle. Its fairly thick and solid. A wider, thicker end on the handle would help pushing it into the ground. Metal exposed for pounding so you don't split it. At least thats how I would do it. Even a rounded metal cap would do. Mine has a wooden handle with built up layers of tape and coated with liquid tape (rubber). I just brush on more when it wears through. After thirty+ years, it's a little shorter than when new. I used to have a depth meter scribed on the blade, but it's worn to where it doesn't read right anymore.

that sounds about right sir!
an exposed butt end on the knife is a must...
by the looks of it, the digger will have to made out of 1/4" thick stock, just for toughness for heavy usage ,and side load from prying...
I'll have to make the handles a bit on the thicker side but still smooth them out, to prevent blistering from using it for a few hrs at a time
once i catch up here in the shop, im going to start work on the piece!
thanks for the tips Silversmith!!
Joe

While digging through one of my drawers at work, I found this in the bottom. I made it from a broken machete about twenty years ago and had forgotten all about it. The thing is still sharp. I made the sheath to go with it. It might make a good plug cutter.
