Minature Knives

I have been a Silversmith for over thirty years. I used to collect knives (full sized) until someone stole my collection. I have my ideas but I can't prove it. I was raised on a farm and we made parts and tools when we needed them. I made my first minature knife out of silver. It's a whole lot easier than making them from circular saw blades. I do most of the cutting with a Dremel tool and seperating disks. If you don't own a Dremel, you need to get one. I grind them into shape and finish them with a lot of sanding and a final buffing. Right now the handles of antler, bone, or shell are glued on because I don't have anything that will drill holes in those saw blades. That stuff is hard! If I can find a way, I will use brass pins. I have also made a few full size knives too. They were in my collection that was stolen. It's actually easier to make the full sized ones. There is a Minature Knife Maker's Society. Their knives can get really expensive. I don't have the equipment that a lot of them have.

I have only found a few but here they are...

Latest Find

Here is my latest find. I found it the other day where they were resurfacing a soccer field.

Not A Minature

This is not one of my minature knives. I bought it about twenty five years ago and I still haven't been able to identify it. The guard and the handle have been replaced. The only changes that I made was to cut about an inch and a half off of the guard. I guess whoever used to own it was afraid of cutting himself because it takes a razor edge. I made the heavy sheath for it. If you look close at the second picture, the blade is stamped US. In all my years of knife collecting I have never seen a US issued Bowie. I saw a picture of a knife in an old auction catalog once that had the same blade design but there was no other information other than it was a Bowie. At first I thought that it might be a cut down Corpmans Bolo, but the handle angle is different. Anyone have any ideas?

I carry tha small buck I found all tha time.
I carry the larger Buck in tha woods if I'm
not MD'in. I got it at Wallie World about a
year ago. I can't bring myself ta dig with it.

So, tha problem is, that I am usually MD'in
when I'm in tha woods, so I'll carry this old
thang I got in a pawn shop many moons
ago for $5.

Buck Special

I carried a Buck Special with me while I was in Viet Nam with the 101st Airborne. They're good knives. I used it for everything, even cutting wire. I didn't have anything to sharpen it with over there, and ended up using an old bayonet. I could sharpen it with a file. The sheath on my Buck rotted from the dampness and I had to make a new one for it. I still have a couple of those Buck Specials, but my Viet Nam knife was part of my knife collection that was stolen. Don't be afraid to use it. That's what they are made for.

My Other Viet Nam Knife

Bayonets might make a good digging tool, but they aren't much of a knife. This is the knife I ended up using. When I traded for it, it was rusty and pitted. I cleaned it up and replaced the rotted handle with parachute cord. It still takes a razor edge. I made this sheath after I returned home. I finally came across a fine stone to sharpen it. By then, I had already sent my dull Buck knife home.
