Back On The Hunt Gets A $5 Gold Piece !

That is freaking outstanding! If it were mine, i dont think i would ever stop staring at that beauty! Your thread makes me wanna dig some serious dirt! Congrats.

Many Thanks again for all the nice compliments :tiphat:

I put together my Vaquero for an air test running coins under the search coil. The Vaquero MD is more like an advanced high tech with old school knobs and switches equipment. The settings are easy, threshold just ON in All Metal Mode, Sensitivity to 7-8, Ground Balance, then switch to Disc mode (iron). These were the same settings when I found the $5 gold piece.

Got a penny, nickel, dime, quarter and the $5 gold piece.

There is no VDI on the Vaquero so I listened with headsets to the sounds generated running each coin pass the search coil at about 4 inches.

The nickel and $5 gold piece sounded very similar . . . probably because of their physical size. The different metals they are made of did not seem to make any difference in the sound

Where in Durango

Hey Hacksaw -

I don't MD but I have friends in San Jose who do, just curious approximately where in Durango you found your gold piece. 3rd Avenue? Buckley Park?

3rd Avenue would make sense because the big Victorian houses there were at one time houses of ill repute ---- so drunken men with coin in pocket would have been stumbling around that area.

Just curious, if you're willing to share your locale. I've invited my friend and his daughter to come visit some time and would love to take them where you scored! And if not, no worries! And congratulations!

Hi wadenelson,

I am not familiar with Durango, CO.

I was visiting some friends in Vallecito and drove into Durango to drop my wife and friends off at the Durango Silverton train station. When I left, I drove straight for a couple of blocks, made a left and was heading back to Vallecito when I saw the MD site. Sorry, that's about all I can tell you . . . :(

Hi lexess,

I am strictly a coin shooter using the screwdriver probe while MDing in the parks.

The pin pointing capability on the Vaquero MD is very nice. Going over the target back and forth until the loudest sound . . . X marks the spot.

Probing with a Craftsman screwdriver modified with a point until I tap on the coin or other object, work the dirt around with my finger and probe. There is a little trick to flip the coin up on end and pull it out of the ground between your finger while holding it with the probe . . . and then the rest is history. If it is foil, I just punch though it and never know what it is. I can go down about 5 inches in the ground to pull out a coin.

That Craftsman screwdriver (41582) has a square forged metal shaft (not round soft steel) and does not bend when prying.
