Back On The Hunt Gets A $5 Gold Piece !

Oh man o man, what a find. Have you had the coin appraised for its numismatic value?

(Just saw this thread. It was from before I was a member here) I just want to say, that has got to be one of the best finds I have ever seen. Bravo......Curt:grin:

Awesome Find!

Congrats on the Gold, and wow, couldn't ask for a more beautiful gold coin. So rare to find a gold coin and then in that condition, well even rarer!

Looks like your post in the "How far back can we go" thread brought this back to life...and well deserved!!

Many Thanks for all the nice compliments !!

I posted this thread two years ago in June while in Durango, CO., I found an 1881 $5 gold piece with my Vaquero metal detector. Since then, the gold piece has been stored away in my coin collection as it is not for sale. Every once in a while when talking with people, I was asked about my hobbies and when I explained that I found a $5 gold piece with a metal detector . . . . it is usually a “yeah – right” type look ?? You know the saying - seeing is believing . . . . .

Well, about 20 years ago, my wife gave me a nice gold bracelet to wear on my right wrist which I have worn ever since. Although old, this 1881 $5 gold piece is considered a common date coin, and its a little pitted after being buried in the ground for a while, its value is basically what the current market price of what gold bullion is. So I decided to bring the $5 gold piece out of being stored away in the collection and have the $5 gold piece soldered into my gold bracelet. Now because it is visible, it has become a conversation piece as people are always asking me about the gold coin and I am so very happy to talk about one of my favorite hobbies of metal detecting and how I found it. I find it great to promote metal detecting as a fun hobby and not a crime!
