New equinox update incoming?

I’m curious. What does everyone think. Will we see a new update for the nox or a new detector all together from minelab?

Who are you to tell me what I can and cannot use the flashlight for?

I'm not telling you how to use a flashlight, so calm down.

I'm just saying that you're commenting on how to use a feature in a way that, I'm believe, it's not designed to be used in.

I do not think there is a software update for the Equinox 600/800 coming anytime soon.

The problem is the fact that metal detectors have their limitations based mainly upon how the entire circuitry was originally done. Some you cannot make them work faster or slower, some you may not be able to improve separatio and recovery time, there are just so many things you can try, but are limited to what you can't do based upon the original circuitry.

Somebody might drive an old fashioned Dodge Charger but they think the run time is costing too much and and they would like it to be more fuel efficient so they'd like to upgrade to a little 4 cylinder engine. Maybe they have a dinky little car to conserve fuel but they'd like a little bit more power for getting out on the open highway and they'd like an upgrade to that powerful V8 that is over there in the Dodge Charger. You might want to upgrade vehicle to larger wheels and tires but unless you change your little part in a transmission, you're not going to be showing the proper speed or get correct mileage read-out from your display.

And the same is true if you went to tiny little tires and wheels. The tires are something you can do with a lot of cars if there's space in the wheel well to take the larger wheel and tire, but it's the number of limitations we have on the product. Some metal detector circuitry is works fine and they do what they were designed to do, and that's what's important. We cannot always make them behave like something else because they were not designed that way. You can't add larger opening and bigger sized doors to a vehicle that's designed with a certain door.

There are a lot of detectors on the market that do not have a lot of the modern features and designs yet they work well, they were designed well, and people enjoy them because they work the way they're supposed to work and that in the end is what counts.

Some updates have been easy, such as adding iron audio volume adjustment to some models. But there is a lot that just cannot be done because the detector was not really designed for some features or some changes in the first place. If an Equinox 800, for example, has been working just fine for a large number of people for a few years now, then it's going to continue to work fine on into the future even if it might lack a feature or two that some other detector has. If we like it, you use it, and if we get to the point where we don't like it or feel it's lacking then we just buy something new and different. Pretty simple.

The only concern with the flashlight I would have wouldn't it be another place the Detector could leak from?

That's a legit concern, sure. Although I imagine N/M took steps to ensure this wouldn't happen. Of course, it would up the cost of the machine, although maybe only a few dollars?

not unless the French,and/or the turks incorporate improvements in "performance" over "multi-iq". that's the way I see it!

For me to calm down would imply im upset, which i am not. I was absolutely commenting on the use of a feature in a way it was not intended. I was using an example from my own experience (yes, ive used my backlight as a flashlight), and then was tongue & cheek about your comment about using in such a manner.

How about they tackle the bent-nail-sounds-like-silver issue first and foremost.

No need for a clock/timer. Hell, if i need a flashlight i turn the backlight on high and turn it upside down so its shining in my hole...lol

I'm not sure why your having a bent nail issue with the Equinox. In Park2 a bent nail is like 99% a one way signal at best. You turn 90 degrees it goes straight to iron tone. I find Park2 better than Park1 for telling good targets from bent nails. If your talking about hearing a good one way on bent nails I always considered that part of the game and live with it.

By the way that's running a F2-0 iron bias setting.

Software.....seriously , lol. Those ML goofballs should pull their heads out , and put it back on the shoulders where it belongs. The list is long. But start with the damn coil ears 1st...
Lol those "goofballs" developed 3 of the best detectors ever made in etrac, ctx, and equinox. And have basically dominated the mid and high end market for the last 10 years.

Hey Minelab I know you guys aren't sitting around twiddling your thumbs. Forget the updates and give us a new Flagship detector to replace the Etrac and CTX.

ML are in a bit of an odd place with the Nox800...Since its introduction, it has probably made a huge dent in the sales of the higher priced CTX3030, and any significant improvements to the Nox will probably kill sales of the CTX altogether.

The mostly answer would be a new improved "Nox1200" at a price point near to and replacing the CTX3030. This would then also compete head on with the Deus 2 ...

Where does that leave the Nox800?

I think we might get some minor software updates and any improvements would be welcome, but I don't think they will be hugely significant...I would like to see an improvement on the FE discrimination, but not sure how much is possible on the existing platform...

I could see an Equinox 1000 or "1200" as you put it replacing the 800. Minelab keeps the 600, though...maybe even offers a price drop? But if this happens, it won't be for a while given rumors of Minelab increasing the prices of the 600 and 800.

I ve not heard those particular rumours, but it would seem a strange time to put prices up with the arrival of the Legend and the Deus 2...

Personally, I think ML should be streamlining what they are offering...I never saw the point in the new Vanquish range for instance...it would have made more commercial sense to offer a stripped down Equinox 600 with virtually no development costs???

It's actually the top end Vanquish and the Nox600 that I think the arrival of the Legend will likely hit the hardest....

Or ML could do something radically different, and offer a substantial capability upgrade to the Nox 800 via a paid for software update....

I think a lot of Nox users would pay say $100 for new software if it was perceived to offer improved performance and new features....Whether that is technically possible, is another matter....

I agree that now would be an odd time to be raising prices. But there could be economic factors (weak Aussie dollar, inflation, cost of materials going up, shipping costs going up, etc.) that are leading to the increase in Equinox prices.

I've always been a believer in a streamlined product line. But I'm guessing Minelab's accountants have determined that any cost savings in development or production is outweighed by anticipated lost sales. For example, if they dropped their Vanquish 540, maybe they think they'll lose out on sales to the Simplex or Ace 400.

The way the Vanquish sells, I think there's a very good point to having it. As for why Minelab didn't just offer a stripped down 600...isn't that what the Vanquish is? Ok, so they strip down the 600 less to make a "Vanquish 640 or 740." But then that might cannibalize 600 sales.

A paid software udpate for 600 users that would turn their machines into an 800 sounds intriguing! But I don't see that happening until they have the 800's replacement, whether it's an Equinox 1000, 1200 or CTX upgrade.

Owning a 600 and now wanting the 800, one has to wonder why they don't cut the 600 from the lineup and price the 800 somewhere in the middle of the two? I am sure they have their reasons for their current pricing, but the jump from a 600 to an 800 seems pretty steep considering the differences appear to be mainly in the control box and mostly software differences at that. Everything else is pretty much the same between the two?

I'm curious why you want an 800 when you have a 600? What is the benefit if you're a dirt only hunter?

The 800 comes with wireless headphones (and module) and allows a lot more fine tuning of Fe/F2, recovery speed, tones/tone break, etc. There's also Gold Mode. I'm sure there are a few features I'm missing, though. It's also possible that the control pods b/w the 600 and 800 are the same except for software and maybe one special chip to prevent someone from installing 800's software onto a 600 control pod.

As for dropping the 600 and lowering the price of the 800, I'm guessing that doesn't make financial sense to them until they release an Equinox "400" or "1000." Losing the 600 might mean losing out on those interested in an Apex. As for the 800, Minelab already raised its price once and rumors are that they'll do it again.

If you want to adjust the tones (like the tone break), recovery speed and Fe/F2 even more, then you'll want an 800.

OK, I understand. I considered an 800 but don't think it would do anything my 600 doesn't already do.
