FINALLY..... dug my VERY first silver EVER ! (also dug my second wheatie ever !)

A huge ATTABOY to you Gary. Congrats on your first shiny and second wheat. The Merc, she is a beautiful coin and this one you won't forget. Although not my first silver I still remember my first Merc a 42 and right where I dug her. Hopefully this will open the floodgates for you on the silver. Also congrats on the permission, sounds promising. Permissions around here are hard to come by right now and way too dry to be digging in anybodys yard. So enjoy, take your time and good luck at the new place. Mark

Thanks Mark !!!! ......fortunately this year we have been getting plenty of regular rain, some weeks I had to postpone detecting due to several rainy days in a row, but I can't complain as I'd rather have the moist dirt to dig, my bigger concern is to be careful not to track any mud in the car or house and upset my wife

In your area maybe if you can get permission for properties that are other than people's home yards, places where it wouldn't make a difference to dig if the ground is dry like farm fields, hope more possibilities open up for you there !

I think nowadays it's a super challenge to find a silver in an area open to the public, so that made my silver find extra special as it was in a public park that has been pounded by detectorists for many years. (my silver might have been masked to other detectorists by the trash target that was in the same hole

Gary, congrats on the silver! I've found 1 silver coin in I don't know how many hundreds of hours of detecting since I started this year. That silver makes all the time spent retrieving toasted Lincoln pennies and nails worth it.

Question for you from another newbie- why did you dig that target? Did you get a good signal and a trashy signal and think "what the hell I'll go for it"?

I'm curious because 9 times out of 10 when I dig an iffy signal it's trash or a nail. It never seems to end up going the other way and being a find. Then I wonder if maybe I should be digging more iffy targets.

Hey RockieBoston !

Thanks !!!!

Neat funny in your signature "Rusty nails are my specialty"
(I've dug my share of rusty nails too )

Regarding your question, I did get a TID that indicated possible silver and if I remember correctly there were some other TIDs that jumped in there too, but since I was able to keep getting that possible silver TID I decided to dig.

(it's possible the trash target that was in the same hole as the silver was able to mask the silver enough to past detectorists that they chose not to dig)

Also, I think that silver was deep enough that I had to rescan more slowly over the area to pick up the possible silver TID again, making me think it was possibly a deep target and perhaps a better chance at silver than a shallow target.

Before that first silver 10 out of 10 possible silver TIDs I had previously dug were aluminum caps or other trash, but I figured to have any chance of digging silver I had to keep risking digging trash especially since the areas I had been detecting in were fairly trashy.

Sometimes when hunting in known very trashy areas the number of "iffy" signals I dig might vary depending on if it's a shorter hunt or a longer hunt, or if I've already found some non-trash targets I might risk digging more "iffy" signals than usual knowing at least it won't be an all trash hunt

Also, if you haven't read it yet on the forum, there is a "raised coil" test that is recommended, that if you get what is a seemingly good signal, raise your coil several inches off the ground and rescan, if you still get a signal indicating a deep target it is "likely" large trash like a crushed aluminum can. Now that test might not be 100% foolproof, but the times I've dug a "raised coil" signal just to check I only remember finding large trash.

Very nice find GKL! Great that you have pulled your first shiny! May many more be headed your way, and doesn't that silver look great down there in the dirt!

Thanks !!!! .....even though at first glance I was thinking it might be an aluminum slug, but once I realized it was silver it did look great !!!!

(I was so used to NOT finding silver it was easy to think it was something else at first glance )

Totally jealous as I am still chasing the first silver coin! Using the same machine and popping a lot of clad, but just now finding out that chasing those not solid repeatable signals that are deeper can be a decent target. Finally starting to find wheats and a lot of clad from the late 60s now that the lights have turned on a bit with that.

.....hey, don't feel bad, if you read some of the posts on this thread we are not the only ones who experienced going a long while without finding a silver.

It looks like you are on the right track though so hopefully your first silver is not too far off !

I would think that silver in the dirt was more likely to have been dropped long ago and would therefore tend to be deeper rather than shallow. Your finding wheats and older clad is a good sign, I would think areas where you find wheats should have a fair possibility of silver too !

......hoping you are able to also post soon: "found my first silver" !

Hey RockieBoston !

Thanks !!!!

Read your response to my response and was inspired to go to my local park and dig those iffy signals. No silver at that park (yet - i know it's there) but my ratio of clad to trash is now running about 2:1, a real improvement!

Congrats on the ratio improvement and glad the post inspired you, I have been inspired by posts on this forum since I started, besides learning good tips it is encouraging to read about other member's finds and realize really good finds are possible.

I am definitely learning how important "location" is, because you can't find what isn't there, I'm realizing as far as older finds, including silver, are likely much more scarce in public areas if they had already been pounded by other detectorists over the years, that is not to say that some were missed and are still there, just that it might be more of a challenge to find silver in public areas than in private property permissions.

The park where I found my first silver recently is a public area with a history dating back to the 1700's, but as such has really been pounded by detectorists over the years from what I was told. That is why I was somewhat surprised to dig a silver there (not that I wasn't hoping ) but it shows that even an area that has been pounded over the years can still have a few goodies that were missed by other detectorists.

I am going to start detecting my new permission shortly today, looks like it rained pretty good sometime before I got up so hopefully the ground should be less soggy by the time I go there.

Hoping your first silver is not far off !!!!

Oh, I found my first silver a month or so back, a Barber dime 3-4 inches down in a local park. But I want to find my second!!!

You're so right about location. If it's not there to find, you won't find it. That's why I'm not really detecting cellar holes anymore. Just a waste of time. I'm 100% certain there's something good in the yard of my 1920 house, just haven't found it yet.

Happy hunting!

Okay, well super congrats on a Barber dime being your first silver, definitely a great first silver indeed !!!!

As far as your 1920 house, maybe detect soon after a good soaking rain as the moist soil might help your detector pick up deeper targets than when the ground is drier.

Congrats on your first silver. just found my first one ( 1854 seated liberty dime) Right in the middle of an old public park. No feeling like finding something so old! Good luck in the future! By the way not to brag was my fifth time detecting EVER. MXT all pro LOVE IT!

you might be surprised. this could just be the ice breaker

Thanks !!!!

......I can hope  but whether my next silver is soon or sometime later on, I'll still have fun detecting in the meantime ! :D

WOW, that is a super-duper first silver, congrats !!!!

Hey, no problem with your bragging, I wish I could have found silver by my 5th hunt  and your experience shows additional evidence that even a public park might still surprise us detectorists with a silver occasionally !
