FINALLY..... dug my VERY first silver EVER ! (also dug my second wheatie ever !)

Congrats Gary, my first was a 44 Merc I believe.
No doubt you nabbed it with the Equinox!
Silver coins always make me happy cause they're hard to find around here.
Hope you find silver and gold on the permission!!!

GKL! Great job. The fun is in the hunt, but a first silver coin is extra fun. I remember my first. I came home and showed my wife. I was really happy with it. She assumed it was worth a lot of money. When I told her I could I could probably get a dollar for it, she said "If it makes you THAT happy go buy 50 of 'em!"

Since then I've been lucky to find quite a few silver coins. Finding them still makes me smile.

Congrats on your first. The second one is just as fun as the 100th. Happy hunting.

Congratulations! A 45 Merc and a bonus permission what a great day mding!

Thanks !!!! .......and to think I almost did not ask for that permission !

Congrats!

Some people will do everything they can to help out somebody truly enthusiastic--perhaps even childlike--about a hobby. We like those people!

Thanks !!!! .......just something about finding that first silver after so many hunts !

Congrats on your first silver coin, Gary ! We were all pulling for you ;)

Thanks !!!! .....I do appreciate all the encouragement I've received from other members since joining the forum !

WTG on the silver! Like was mentioned before, you never forget your first. Here’s to many more

Thanks !!!! .......I don't think finding silver will ever get old

Thanks !!!! Yep, the Equinox found it pretty deep down !

I think nowadays it's a super challenge to find a silver in an area open to the public, so that made my silver find extra special as it was in a public park that has been pounded by detectorists for many years. (my silver might have been masked to other detectorists by the trash target that was in the same hole)

I'm thinking getting private property permissions is what people who live in areas like we do need to do to have a better chance at finding silvers.

(and I like that you hoped for me to find silver AND gold on the new permission )

Thanks !!!! hey, hopefully you can get your wife to realize the fun is in having dug one, not merely having one

I think after taking so long to dig the first silver, the 2nd silver and every one after that will be as fun even it they don't take as long to find, I just have to remember how long it took for the first one and it will keep being fun !

Congratulations on the silver and the wheatie. Those silvers seem to be pretty elusive lately so well done. I still get excited to dig wheats. At least it lets you know you’re in the right spot

Thanks !!!! ......yep, with maybe a rare exception it's not very likely any fresh silvers are being dropped to refresh the supply available to dig, so to have a better chance we have to find places to hunt that are yet un-hunted or hunted very little. (or hope to find one others have missed in the past)

.....good point about the wheaties, we can hope if we find wheaties then maybe a silver might be in the same general area !

Congratulations on your first silver GKL, I have found quite a few myself and I can tell you this, anytime I pull a silver out of the ground I still get that same feeling as I did on my very first one. It never ever get's old amigo! Congrats!

Thanks !!!! ......after as long as I waited for the first one I can agree it would never get old even if I found several in the same week

That first silver did kinda take me by surprise though, I had gotten so used to only finding clad, modern pennies, and trash that when I first saw it in the bottom of the hole I wasn't thinking silver, at very first glance I though maybe it was an aluminum slug

This is the kind of thread that gets a lot of attention not because a Merc is normally a “spectacular find”, but because it’s YOUR Merc and YOU found it, which makes it.....a spectacular EXPERIENCE!
I read all about how “you’ll know it’s silver the second you see it” on the forum before I found my first, and boy were people right! The INSTANT I saw it, after digging a couple thousand dirty clad coins...I knew...a 64 Rosie, technically the “worst” silver coin you can find. To ME it was the best coin ever. I know you feel the same, and that’s what this whole thing is all about.
Now...to find another!! Nice work sticking with it Gary, you’ve made some really nice contributions to this forum along the way too, we ALL appreciate that.

Thanks !!!! ......I absolutely agree, as nice as Mercs are, I realize it's a really nice find, but not a "spectacular" find, but the focus of it being my first silver after such a long wait made it worth sharing, it can be an encouragement to noobs to not give up ! (besides, after my threads about "average" hunts, I figured members deserved to hear about an extra nice find )

Actually for me I was so used to not seeing silver that at first I assumed it was maybe an aluminum slug  (until I pulled it out of the bottom of the hole, I usually don't take my reading glasses with me )

Thanks for all the kind words, they are appreciated !

Congrats

Congrats and wow hope you find some great things at the 1800s site. Nothing like finding silver

Thanks !!!! ......I'll have to specifically ask the property owner when I see him later this week if the property had been detected before, I got the initial impression it either hasn't been detected or detected very little.

I'll be detecting there Friday unless the rain chances effect our area too much, but Saturday for sure since not calling for any rain on Saturday. Depending on how busy I am after the hunts it might be a day or two before I post about them, but hoping to post some good finds when I do !

That’s awesome Gary! Big Congrats on your first silver coin!
My first silver was also a Merc a 1944, it took me a year and a half to find that one,
No matter how many you end up finding that first one will always be special!
Also Congrats on gaining a permission! Maybe more silver in the near future!

Thanks !!!! ......after hearing how it also took several members so long to find their first silver it's now not feeling so unusual it took me so long

When I think how deep that Merc was and how it was missed over the years by other detectorists it makes it even more special I was able to find it because I was told that park had been pounded by detectorists over the years.

I'm hoping that permission is more productive from not being public property and having greater potential for yet unfound targets !

Congrats! She is a Beaut Clark!

Thanks !!!! ......yep, I've seen Mercs as a kid from getting an occasional one in change back then, but digging one that deep out of the dirt somehow makes it extra special !

A huge ATTABOY to you Gary. Congrats on your first shiny and second wheat. The Merc, she is a beautiful coin and this one you won't forget. Although not my first silver I still remember my first Merc a 42 and right where I dug her. Hopefully this will open the floodgates for you on the silver. Also congrats on the permission, sounds promising. Permissions around here are hard to come by right now and way too dry to be digging in anybodys yard. So enjoy, take your time and good luck at the new place. Mark
