Diggers tv show tonight on NatGeo

I enjoyed it, especially their excitement of their finds. I had a slight problem with them finding ANYTHING with their coils in the salt water at the beach. Am I missing something here? My ACE 250 and VAQUERO absolutely HATE salt water! Beach is fine and wet sand is fine with the sensitivity turned down a tad but coil IN the salt water? Does the AT PRO have that capability? Otherwise, it was nice to allowed to hunt those areas!

When the fad of buying and finding out it's a lot of WORK...does this mean that there may be the detector of our dreams selling cheap on EBAY in a few months?

That dream detector wont do you any good if the guy selling it helped destroy the hobby by leaving holes and trash everywhere causing a ban in our parks and pubilc places.:(

Yeah, this show is terrible for the hobby. I just sent my own comments to Nat Geo Channel. What a slander of a great hobby... :tissue:

You can make it work with ground balance on single freq detectors BUT depth suffers a lot.

Howdy

Hello, I'm new to the form but not new to metal detecting. Been doing it since the early 80's.
I was watching Nat Geo this evening and was unpleasantly surprised to see another reality show ( Diggers ) that is going to make our hobby a little bit tougher.
People are looking for ways to get some extra cash, and Diggers shows just how damn easy it is to make lots of money metal detecting. All ya go to do is get a detector and when it beeps there's going to be something of value under that coil. Just remember to throw the dirt around and leave the hole open so the next guy knows that you already found it.

Well at least I learned some new really cool terms...Ster, Tok, Civ, and that I should lick a Jellyfish.

haha valuable stuff like $5 empty toothpaste bottles. I must have thrown away about $5,000 in them over the years.

well if you were unpleasantly surprised with tonites show just wait until the "american diggers" show airs on the spike network when they use backhoes to look for civil war relics......http://aroundthenetworks.com/spike-tv-announces-unscripted-show-american-digger/

I was certainly intrigued when I first learned of this show....Sadly, I was disappointed when the two Goofballs displayed such sloppy etiquette regarding their digging techniques. :( MAJOR flaw right there, NatGeo !.....If your intentions are set to ruin things for us, you're on the right path !

Thanks for the link dogpound. I looked at the description of the show. The battlefields are protected by law. I wonder how thats going to play out!
Reading some of the comments.....Looks like the Archeology people are pretty upset.

All I could do was shake my head in disbelief with the turnout of the show. I was disappointed. Not only were they sloppy but used those silly names that I won't mention which will make us all sound retarded. Hopefully it didn't get many views. Where did they get those values anyway??? I have sent NatGeo my thoughts.

I wish they had made a show that highlighted "historical value" instead of "monetary value." It really conveyed the wrong goal of why a lot of us are in the hobby.

(No beachunters were harmed in the making of this post)

I haven't watched it but it sounds as bad as I feared. Worse, even, if they're making up their own jargon for whatever unfathomable reason.

Shows like 'Diggers' and 'Gold Rush Alaska' give a really poor presentation of the hobby they claim to showcase. If we're spectacularly lucky, Diggers will die a quick death after the pilot.

I don't have a problem so much with the goof ball way they were acting. It's fine if they enjoy what they're doing, having fun, and making a competition out of everything.
I really don't even have a problem with their lingo (although I'm not going to be using those terms in public.)
Some of the values were definitely inflated (who in the heck is going to give you $5 for a used tube of toothpaste?!) and they should have been talking historical importance vs. monetary value.

What I really have an issue with is the holes; I can't say if they filled them properly or not, but they should have shown them doing so and stressed the importance of it.
I was happy to see the disclaimer at the end about getting permission, but there should have been more emphasis on ethics and laws during the show.

Although I do swing an At Pro, and use a propointer like they do, I was glad to see it wasn't one big informercial. I don't think they mentioned a brand name one time over both episodes.

I understand they have to get ratings, and can't bore the viewers to death, but I just hope they don't ruin the hobby in an effort to make an interesting show for the general public. I say "general public" because they, like all reality shows, aren't expecting to please the crowd that's already involved in the activity being fimed. Instead, they are out to gain the attention of the couch potaoes whose only hobbys are sitting around and watching reality shows.

I watched both episodes and while I thought these guys were quite goofy, I was interested in seeing what they found. I didn't like their lingo or the way they acted and overall just didn't like the show.

Most of us didn't like the show and we were on here talking about it but the bottom line is that we did watch and we are talking about it....good or bad, it's getting attention.

My biggest concern is that public officials like Sen. Hayes will see this show and use it as evidence to support their laws banning our hobby.

These two guys are the biggest idiots they could have found to do a show. It is also fairly obvious that they have very little experience metal detecting. Heck, I have only been in the hobby for 11 months and I have better technique, digging skills, and detecting ethics then these two morons. And their lingo, "civ", "juice", and all the other idiotic sayings  Then they put outrageous values on junk. I'm surprised that Juicy Ring, or whatever his idiotic nickname was, didn't say he could get $30 for the rusted square head nail he found. I don't think we need to worry, this show will not last long at all.

My original post was about 5 minuts into watching their 2nd show. The goofball mentality seems to work for reality t.v.

I would give them a F on digging and technique.

The lingo or terms, cologne, juice, toke must have been thought up when they were visiting a tequila bar.

There will be some very serious consequences to our hobby and our hunting rights if they continue with this show down it's current path.

disappointed......
Joe
