Time to shut down the stock market for a month or two. No one should be profiting off of this so called pandemic by shorting stocks.

A few problems with that. Closing the market would entail no more loans, borrowing or trade. Most of the world would likely collapse over night. Also the entities with the ability to short the market in force are the one's who dictate the rules.
The good news is 1 day the short positions will be closed out or covered.

How about a temporary ban on short selling or reinstate the uptick rule? But make it 10 cents and not a lousy penny. Drastic times call for drastic measures.

I wasn't going to look. It's just a couple of small etrade accounts the wife and I have played with. I have about the same invested in either account that I have in metal detecting equipment. Well, I looked, it's a sea of red with a couple of green dots, turns out for most of my stock picks the md equipment was the better investment.

My TSP is loosing big time. Admittedly I dont know enough about stock market to know what to do. I could move everything out of c s and i and put in G fund for lower risk. Im loosing the %30 gain I made last year at an alarming rate. Part of me just wants to stop contributing the %20 from my checks and just live my best life now like a lot of my younger coworkers do.

Always plan for when you can't work anymore. When that happens you will forget about the life others had years earlier, That must have brand new car will not look good and having a hobby like MD that actually pays YOU to do will look better and better. My MD equipment I have I look at it as a investment in my future no matter how old it gets, It will still go out and make me money. One form of my "Retirement" is the buckets of coins I have saved from the first year I went MD on down time.

Right now that 20% is buying stock at rock bottom prices so when the price goes back up your stocks will be much more valuable. I kept investing 30% when the market crashed in 2008 , bought the stock cheap and recovered all my money . Wife is still investing 30% each check , this is mostly panic causing the market to drop.

……..cause Walmart’s out of hand soap and toilet paper here too.

…….maybe Dave got to the toilet paper first ?:laughing::laughing:

I looked again, I shouldn't have, Harley Davidson stock has been good to me until today. I've been able to buy low and sell high a few times. I'm thinking now would be a great time to buy, once this passes people will start buying T-shirts again.

Just heard most (if not all) basketball tournaments have been either cancelled or postponed, not sure which. (maybe someone else has more specific details)

Very understandable given at least 2 players have tested positive.

I'm guessing this might affect baseball and football, but I don't know for sure.

Of course it is understandable people's safety is more important than sports obviously.

NBA has shut down the season. Hockey is possible to do the same. Sure all other sports will be doing the same.

I wonder what industries/jobs would be deemed necessary? That is even under a quarantine condition, those people would still need to go to work. I would assume energy facilities, utility facilities, medical staff, first responders, and communications. The refinery I work for is a 350mbd facility. I work in the section that manages all of the outgoing products as well as blends the gasoline and diesel. There are 7 people who are qualified to do my job in the refinery.

But this is a serious and tricky risk.
Kids DO get it, with less to none symptoms.
And they can still infect "grandpa or grandma who already are weak".

Yep. One reason it's counter productive to shut down elementary and middle schools if it's only being done as a precaution. It'll send those kids who are asymptomatic carriers into the homes of grandparents because the parents still have to work. If nothing else, it increases the exposure time of adults to kids that you wouldn't know are infected. On balance, it's probably good for kids to be in school the better part of the day.

It's official now following the closure of the NBAs seaon being canceled due to players testing positive for corona the NHL has suspended it's season as well.

Last time something big went around (think it was H1N1 but can not remember right now) where I live the gov banned all large public gatherings, no church services and no sports events, it helped dramatically to cut down the infection rate.

Just came back from Publix and all the bottled water was GONE. It's like a hurricane is approaching.

Curious to see how many people will be at the beach this weekend.

We stopped by a "Dollar General" store on the way home today and got 4 packs of their store brand toilet paper (12 rolls per pack for only $6.00 per pack and very good quality, as strong as name brand)

That might sound like a lot, but even before the Coronavirus we would normally often get 3 of the 12 roll packs just so we would not need to shop for it as often, not like it's going to go bad being stored.
