Going to destroy the ATPRO

All I know is I hunt (freshwater) with a lot of different guys and have tested small gold on a few different machines including CTXs.... I've pulled over $10k in gold from beaches pounded by the best machines out there..

My next $10,000 in gold will be found with an ATP too...

YMMV...

Well I shoot guns a lot.
Can a marksman shoot as accurate with a marginally accurate rifle as another
marksman can on average with a far more accurate shooting rifle??? Nope

Can a marksman shoot a marginally accurate rifle as good or better as a marginal shooter can shoot a more accurate gun??? Yes, very possible.

Can the above be applied to detectorists and detectors?? I think so.

Cheers

But if you never knew about the target being there, you wouldn't take the shot...

Ice, I'm sure your 10K in gold isn't in small gold.

Small gold in the water is kinda a non issue, at least for me.
The Excalibur with a 10" coil will scream on a 10K 0.6 gram ring which is worth about $10 tops. That is small enough.

If I want small gold on land, I will use my Tesoro Lobo, that is a machine that finds small gold.

Have fun out there, don't take this personally, just trying to keep things in perspective.

Cheers.

Ice, I'm sure your 10K in gold isn't in small gold.

A 20 gram 22k chain rings up much smaller than any .6 gram ring..

A half gram ring hits as hard as a nickel on my ATP...

A lot of it is small gold because when you get to a new place that's already been hit hard that's all there is sometimes...

If I want dirt silver, Minelab would be my choice...

But I can buy 24 mercs with a small gold earring I just found so its tough to get excited about land hunting..

I know from watching your posts Ice you have critically compared your machine to the best available and you still run the AT Pro. So do I.

Words are cheap especially from trolls, I go with real results that I get to see.

Got that right! Trust me, if anyone is always looking for a better way its me.. I wish there was a better machine for freshwater, but I'm still looking...

So when somebody doesn't agree with you, you call them a troll?
That is very immature, even by internet standards.

Edit

The only way I'm going to get better results is by changing location, not machines..

Japan looks awfully nice....

<°)))>{

Yes it does.
Nice variety of finds that 18KRonin gets, I think I read where he is in Japan.

Edit

Fair enough allow me to re phrase that.

When I was a machinist 100 years ago I trained new people to operate highly complicated CNC machines and robotics.

There was a steady percentage of trainee's that just couldn't learn the machines, and in their frustration they stopped looking for what they were doing wrong and started blaming the machines for their own inability to learn them.

Blaming a machine for your inability to learn how to operate it speaks volumes. Happy now?

The at pro is a great machine. For the money it is hard to beat and it is a very indestructible detector. When I first started out with it I almost tossed it in the woods also. Stick with it it takes time.

Hunting junk piles as Mottz is trying to do is no picnic with any detector. I know cause I've tried and done it with machines costing 3 and 4 times what an AT Pro cost.
Just the nature of the beast (junk piles). But when you do make that one good/nice find in one of them----makes a person feel real good inside.

Keep at it Mottz!!

Basic Metal Detecting technology differs little from machine to machine. Each brand has there own software, coil design, frequency and control design and features.

I hunted with a buddy using a V3i. I hit a target that gave a faint signal from one direction and none from a 90 degree turn with no vdi. It read at 10 inches. The V3i got the same thing and the buddy said I wouldn't dig that. Turned out to be a 1979 Penney.

There are different level of machines and there is little difference within the levels and the biggest difference from one to the other is quality, and features.

Back at it again this morning before the heat wore me down. Again, to my surprise, nothing worth keeping. Only dug 80 and higher vdi's. Had 1 slamming hit of 91. Tried everything before I put the shovel in the ground. Side to side, raise the detector, check for iron and even pinpointed at an inch by inch square. I would have bet the farm it was a good coin. Nope, a twisted up piece of metal. I thought about forgetting this place but I'm not going to let it get the best of me. May give it a rest for awhile but I will get my revenge on this place!!

On a side note, the owner is even starting to feel sorry for me. He gave me some paper currency and said he is going to dig out some old coins that he doesn't want anymore. Said something about Russian kopeks and some duplicate coins. Heck ya!! I'm in for free coins! Here's the currency he gave me.
Think he said these are Russian rubles but if anyone has any more info on them, please let me know.

And this as he explained to me is a currency from WW1 or WW2 (he has so many stories that is hard to keep everything straight) that was given to the troops to spend in those countries. Again, if anyone has any info...

So Guessing Nothing there then move on brother

Sometimes it helps to walk away from a trouble site for a while and hit some other places , get your confidence back and then later hit that site again with a fresh perspective and refound confidence. Its entirely possible that there isnt much there to find in spite of its history , or its just going to take a lot of work and time to get to any prizes that may be there. I usually keep places like this in mind as I hunt other sites , just as I do all the sites I personally consider "hunted out". I go back to them when I run out of other sites or just feel like I want to do something different.

Sympathy coins for the ATPro?

Ohiochris has some good advice.
Go try a modern schoolyard or something for a bit and just bang out as many coins as you can.

Cool paper money.

I've put in time with both the AT Pro and the Minelab Etrac and I have to say the AT Pro is certainly no slouch. I kinda want to kick myself that I sold it because now I don't have a proper detector I can use to get into the water with . That being said, I love the Etrac but I wouldn't put it way above the AT Pro.

I miss the AT Pro enough that once I gather (find) the money to purchase another AT Pro, I will do so just to get into the water.

The most solid advise here has been given: Keep spending time with the machine, You will learn more about your detector and metal detecting in general.

Think of it this way: A great guitarist is not great because of the guitar brand he/she plays but by the amount of time they put into practicing and getting better. Same principle applies to metal detecting

Above all make sure your having fun. This is a hobby relax and enjoy the time you have

So why not give some advice rather than professing your love for this Midas metal detector?

Everybody keeps saying how good they are, but where or the meat and potatoes operating tips?

Besides "lift the coil".

Cheers.

That is a meat and potato operating tip. One that works regardless of what detector is being used. Operating the detector is super simple , knowing how to interpret what it is telling you takes time.
