Right now I only have a Simplex+ and Gold Kruzer. I've been thinking of picking up a 3rd detector before Spring, and maybe selling the Simplex in the process. I've been looking at both the Legend and Triple Score lately, but a friend recently offered to sell me his good condition Whites DFX for $250! I understand these are still sought after and/or many people hang onto them even when machines with newer tech are available. I can get an open box Triple Score for around $400 on eBay, Legend maybe $450-$500. Just curious what some people would do in my situation. I had a Whites Classic III about 20yrs ago. I wasn't super impressed with it but it was ok. I know Whites made some models which absolutely blow it away. So anyway, DFX @$250 vs Triple Score or Legend at the aforementioned prices? What would you do if all you had was a Simplex and a GK at your disposal and your budget was around $500 by selling the Simplex?

Edit: If I get the DFX I won't need to sell the Simplex. But I would to buy a $500 machine right now.

I was never super impressed with the DFX. It had 100 settings to change but it was nearly impossible to get it to perform optimally for a specific set of hunting conditions. For me it did fine hunting parks for gold, terrible in iron and terrible at the beach except for the dry sand. I got a Bigfoot coil for it and was able to cover a lot of ground with that thing, albeit only at 3" depth. I started using a Minelab Explorer II and never went back. I'd rather have a $500 machine that I knew was performing better than a $250 machine that I didn't trust, because I knew I'd quickly make up that $250 difference in finds.

Thanks for the reply. I think I will likely sell my simplex and get a triple score, unless I find a really good deal on a legend

I bought a super clean Legend from Cherry Picker for $300 last year. They show up. If you're patient, you'll find one.

Are they that much better than a Triple Score for finding stuff? I've heard that the menus and features are a little over the top on the Legend. I'm not afraid of it, but I also don't like menu diving. I'm a musician in my spare time and I'm the same way about my music equipment. I much prefer simplicity but not at the expense of sound or power. I'm not an analog purist exactly but I also don't enjoy messing with many bells and whistles. I just want to make good music.

Ask any Legend user here. The Legend is only complicated as you want it. It's a turn on, ground balance and go machine. If you have any experience metal detecting at all, it's a no brainer. Read up on what tones you hear and you'll be able to call your coins before you dig it. The menu system does require some button pushing, but not that much. Nokta has really done a good job with their software upgrades as of late. Very customizable... if you want to disc out certain metals easy to do. Plenty of websites that offer great advice and tips.

My only complaint is that the buttons are not back lit.

Last I saw Bart's at Big Boy Hobbies had the Triple Score with two coils, wireless headphones, pinpointer, digger and pouch for $499.

I was NOT impressed with the DFX at all. Maybe I had a bad one?
I do have a closet queen Legend for sale, only used for 24 hours. 2 coils and headphones. PM me if interested.

Thanks for the replies so far. How about the XP Deus models 1 and 2 compared to Nokta's Legend? I have a feeling some people might say that Legend fits in between the two in capability.

I would pick the DFX over the Legend because I know to run the DFX and find great things with it, plus I don't like Nokta detectors.
Familiarity with a capable and reliable older machine definitely trumps bells & whistles alot of the time. Everyone has their preferences. Personally I kind of prefer Nokta detectors. Ive also had a couple of Whites detectors that were fair. Not great, just fair. I've become very familiar with my Gold Kruzer and I seem to find plenty of coins and cool brass relics effortlessly with it. Right now it's my most sophisticated detector. I have no immediate plans to part with it unless maybe a great deal on a Deus 2 popped up.

Never seen a Deus (1) but there was problems with it. A lot of people love them though. The D2 is great. I sold mine for several reasons. I didn’t like all the batteries, the control holder isn’t strong enough and did not like the antenna wire. I don’t think its performance is noticeably any better if at all than the Legend and its twice the cost.

And the tones are like nails on a chalkboard.

I was glad to sell my DFX. I had it quite a while and never did fully understand that thing. Now I swing a Legend and love it. So much less headaches.
I have had the DFX for 17 years and there are things that I can do with the DFX that I have never seen another detector capable of doing what it can do.
So if someone takes the time to learn what can be done with the DFX they will find great finds.
