1857 Canadian Penny
My oldest find to date is an 1857 Canadian penny. Big thing, about the size of a half dollar. I found it on December 28th of last year (2006). It got strangely warm here in Ohio so I decided to swing. I found it only 100 feet from my front yard. The city is widening the street I live on this summer, so I have been going up and down asking neighbors if I can detected the grass strip between their sidewalks and street before the city digs it up. Have been finding lots of interesting old coins, mainly late 1800's and up.
My best find so far is an 1892'O' dime is what I would guess is at least MS-65 condition. It's as if the thing was dropped the day it was minted. As soon as I can get a chance to scan it I'll post a pic. It's in such great shape that I even joined PCGS for a year. I'll be sending it in soon for grading.
I also found 2 hammered coins about two blocks down that from my research date back to 10-30AD. I have a feeling they are fakes however, as they are nearly identical and I can't imagine hammered coins being nearly perfect in shape to one another. I'm going to make a trip to a local coin dealer in Toledo this summer (I'm a teacher, get the summers off, yeah!) to find out if they are authentic.
Oh, by the way, I started detecting in June of 2006. I love MDing! What an addiction to have! I have coffee cans full of clad! woohoo!
