Oldest Finds?

The oldest coin I have found was an 1887 IH at an old homestead. Not as much history out this way either OD.

Now that you have a DFX Steve, you should go to the DFXONLY hunt :D

I hunt arrowhead and the oldest flint point is app. 9000 years old. Was told by Ball State archeology dept. The oldest coin i have found is a 1797 2 reales that i found at an old house site. Also found 1817 large cent there. This was owned by a justise of the peace many many years ago. Also found 2 brass wedding rings there.

I'm not much of a coin hunter, I have found some cool relics from the mid/late 1800's... actually I've found alot of stuff from that time period and although its all cool to find, most of it was just junk...

Although I've only found one arrow head (around 3,500 BC), I'm always on the lookout for flint and fossils. I think you can miss so much if you are only searching for metallic items.

There's something about a piece of worked flint, you're actually holding something which someone took time to make, thousands of years ago.

The more you research, the sooner you will find the old stuff. And start with your back yard, since my oldest- 1781 George III Irish Halfpence- was in my uncle's garden about 200 yds from my house. My 1853 half dime avatar was about 1/2 mile from home.

HAPPY SWINGIN

1857 Canadian Penny

My oldest find to date is an 1857 Canadian penny. Big thing, about the size of a half dollar. I found it on December 28th of last year (2006). It got strangely warm here in Ohio so I decided to swing. I found it only 100 feet from my front yard. The city is widening the street I live on this summer, so I have been going up and down asking neighbors if I can detected the grass strip between their sidewalks and street before the city digs it up. Have been finding lots of interesting old coins, mainly late 1800's and up.

My best find so far is an 1892'O' dime is what I would guess is at least MS-65 condition. It's as if the thing was dropped the day it was minted. As soon as I can get a chance to scan it I'll post a pic. It's in such great shape that I even joined PCGS for a year. I'll be sending it in soon for grading.

I also found 2 hammered coins about two blocks down that from my research date back to 10-30AD. I have a feeling they are fakes however, as they are nearly identical and I can't imagine hammered coins being nearly perfect in shape to one another. I'm going to make a trip to a local coin dealer in Toledo this summer (I'm a teacher, get the summers off, yeah!) to find out if they are authentic.

Oh, by the way, I started detecting in June of 2006. I love MDing! What an addiction to have! I have coffee cans full of clad! woohoo!

My oldest finds include a 1799 Draped Bust Large Cent, 1802 Draped Bust Half Cent, 1756 French Sol, 1864 2 Cent piece. Its not so hard to find them here in Philly!

WOW! Some pretty impressive finds here. The first 2 weeks after I recieved my DFX I found an 1892 V Nickle and a 1906 Indian Head.

Keep Swing'in
Jack

I've only found six silver coins so far, the oldest is an 1876 seated dime.

I don't post very often but yesterday I bested my oldest find by 13 years. My previous best was my 1796 large cent. Yesterday I found a 1783 Constellatio copper in a farm field along the Mohawk river. I thought it was going to take me a long time to best 1796. My other best finds include 1809 large cent, 1832 large cent, and 1836 hard times token. I have been detecting for about two years.
