My oldest coins found so far are an 1887 Indian head and an 1846 Large Cent-both found at a small downtown renovation site.

Alan i can appreciate finds that your able to locate, i also went to your web site and checked out the places, i am a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and i do rev war living history...which as we know goes back to 1775--1789...great pictures and great detecting.....My family tree covers many places in England...Worster, Payne, Baldwin, Tomlinson.

Living history events are very popular over here, and cover all periods in history.
Sometimes there are also people showing how hammered coins were made.
I find it all very interesting.

My oldest find was found recently in an old "hunted-out" park. It is a Chinese coin that was minted from 1736-1795 A.D.!

Oldest find so far is a 1790 8 Reale Carolus IV coin. Minted in Spain I think. I don't know much about it. The marks are *S*8R*C (or G?) The thing is this coin is in great shape. Nothing like the smoothies I see on ebay. Even the marks on the edge are sharp. Found it in a soccer field!

My oldest is an 1879 Indian head penny I found today, it was my 4th time out.

Wow, old thread  Since a year has gone by, my oldest find now is an 1882 IH penny. I've gained 16 years :D

Personally, I have only found coins going back to late 1800's, but was the first to hunt an old Womens College back in the 1980's, and found 2 Barber halves, and about 5-6 barber dimes, dozen or so Indian heads and Mercury dimes, plus some silver jewelry. I have been collecting and finding Indian artifacts since I was a child. my "prized" posession in this department is a large, deep "grist" bowl that would hold about a gallon or 2. I had an Archaeologist test the oxidation of the stone, and documented it at 3500 yrs. old. Hope you have lots of Luck!

It must be great finding some of those old Indian artefacts. Finding coins is always good, but finding an item which you know someone has put a lot of effort into making, is something altogether different.

Well my oldest coin is....don't laugh 1952 wheat penny. :yes:I found it yesterday at a ball park, and a 1961 nickel. :wow: I have only been detecting since well, end of February, it was really cold here.

I look back at my original reply from sometime ago and laugh. I had only been detecting for a few weeks when I wrote that. I'm happy to reply that a few months later I found an 1787 Connecticut Copper in my parents back yard.

Oldest I have found is an 1899 bent IH. I just can't quite seem to hit the 1800's barrier very good........YET!  Maybe this year when I head out east. ;)

I hit on an 1846 large cent in pristine condition last spring. I've been wanting to break the 1700's barrier but no luck as of yet. Maybe this year I'll get in some respectable "hours in swing". That is the key to success. I have found some Colonial artifacts, but no old coppers and such.

No joke hoser. I've only found 3 coins here from the late 1800's. We're just in bad areas for old coins. :( I'm hoping to find some old ones next month too ;)
