I only hunt parks and schools at the moment, but working on permissions. For 5+ years I used a ACE 350 and now with the Legend I'm re-hunting old spots and have found tons more relics, coins, jewelry, etc. Plus 2 gold rings and 8 silver rings. Found more nickels now than I ever have lol.

Went out Friday to an area that had late 1800's activity that everyone said was "hunted out" . Didn't find coins, but found this stuff.

SirDigs: That's very encouraging (and I'd be happy finding that lot too!). I'm so looking forward to that package arriving from Big Boys Hobbies.

Here's some pics of the finds I made, with the borrowed Simplex Plus, at the organized hunt I went on last month. Thus far, they are the only things I've found that aren't real trash (I didn't include the new penny I found in the park a week ago - don't want you to be jealous). The only Civil War items are the half horseshoe and piece of CSA artillery shell. I hope the new gear adds more.

Oh my, it appears I failed to mention the most important part of metal detecting. Always figure out what your wife wants, and get it. THEN you get your metal detector! She will not even be upset. How can she be? You just bought her something nice before you got yourself something.
You think I'm kidding? I learned that valuable lesson finally. Women are very forgiving if you always consult with them. The moment a woman feels like you're hiding something that is just asking for trouble. "Hey I really want this metal detector, it will help my nerves." "What do you think about this one?" and of course, "Hey how about if I get you that nice outfit you've been looking at?" Yep, I always talk to my wife before, during, and after a purchase. And we plan just what I will get and what she will be getting and make it happen for both of us. Been married 31.5 yrs now. Only thing I wish is that time hasn't gone so fast.

31.5 years? You're just a youngster. I'll have 40 in this July.**

I appreciate the suggestions though. I wrote that post right after making the purchase and before letting my dear spouse know. But before doing so I opened some mail, on my desk, from the day before. Inside one envelope was a refund check from some services I paid for last year. It nearly covered the entire Legend purchase. Yay! So my purchase, when disclosed, was happily accepted.

I also pointed-out that it would get my retired butt out of the house (and out of her way). I think she was a happier with that more than anything else.

** Please allow me to impart some wisdom from my marriage. When you retire (if not already), don't , under any circumstances, try to improve / streamline household operations (such as reorganizing the pots & pans, or redoing the anarchy of the spice drawers). They didn't ask for your help, they don't need your help, and they don't want your help. It will only end badly for you.

And this is out of left field, but I've not seen it addressed. For the detectors with rechargeable batteries, are the batteries replaceable? Or are they like a lot of technology in that once the battery is done (think cellphones and tablets, for example), you have a useless brick?

Excellent question, Fe Man…and not as easy to answer as someone might think. I believe that most, if not all, detectors from well known manufacturers that have internal rechargeable batteries can have those batteries replaced - but I don’t know that for certain. I do know for certain that the internal battery for the Minelab Equinox can be replaced by the user, because I’ve done it. I don’t know for sure that battery on the Legend that I own is replaceable, but I suspect that it is. I don’t think it’s user replaceable however…I believe it needs to make a trip to a certified repair center for it to happen. The Legend is neatly designed for an external battery to be used which can supplement the internal battery, but could also act as a power source should the internal battery lose it’s ability to hold a charge over time.

I can retire right now, but my wife won't let me lol. Not gonna miss work. I am a woodworker by trade since I was 17. Retiring 1 month before I turn 62. My new job is metal detecting. Dug another silver rosie today with the Legend. Rang 47 solid about 4-5 inches deep.

Wow! Good find and great call on the gremlin. I haven't seen that classic cartoon in a very, very long time (love it!).

I like your choice of career change too. You are able to retire young enough to enjoy it. I'm just now figuring out what I want to do with the time I have left, and detecting is starting to play a significant part of what I hope to do.
