Have any forum members had the good fortune to " turn up " a gold coin or silver dollar ( not an Ike deal , but the real deal ) while MD'ing ? If so , what ; and under what circumstances ? Roadrunner_426

I did find a 1882-S Morgan dollar back in November of last year. Here's a scan:

I included the details under this post:

No gold coins, though. That's still a goal for me.

That is a very nice looking coin

just starting out haven't found anything old yet

Dozens of gold and thousands of silver. Unfortunately I tend to only find one coin at a time , not the huge hoards that sometimes turn up. But then for years I always checked the width of deep targets and tended to ignore the large signals on the basis they were most likely hub caps or paint tin lids.
I now check everything much more carefully and let the spade be the discriminator so I now do find the odd hoard.

Beautiful coins, Brian!

I'm going to have to plan a European vacation. My ticker goes into overdrive every time I see the posts from that part of the world. :)

A gold coin is a goal of mine, just not this year. Doesn't mean I wouldn't mind finding one this year though ;) I'd like to join the silver dollar club this year though. That kind of money is hard to find here. It's hard enough finding halves.

I don't think I will ever find a gold coin where I hunt. If I found one it would be a fluk. I haven't seen anything but clad in 3 weeks. Our old park in town now has a no detector ordinance. Rob

If I ever find a gold coin, I better be wearing a Depends when it happens. :?: :wow:   Those are some awesome coins.

I was hunting a farm field/house site with a Whites QXT Pro and was getting a lot of nickle/pulltab signals. These were turning up to be the thick older style aluminum pie plate. I dug quite few of these in hopes of, well gold or some super relic. I was walking along and got another one of these signals. This one said 5", so with a sigh I bent down and flipped over a plug of dirt. Sitting right flat on the bottom of the plug was an 1859 British Half Sovereign Gold Coin.

Brian , what kind of locations produce that quantity of gold coins ? Are those 20 franc ? Roadrunner_426

Tell me about it Okie ! I'm still looking for both myself..the guy I used to hunt with joined the Cartwheel Club first time out of the shoot..not the first day..the first coin ! Roadrunner_426

Great find Jeff, young head Victorian coins are some of my favourities.
My coins are full Sovereigns Roadrunner. Anything can be found anywhere in the U.K. but referring to the post on another section of the forum yesterday I've never found a shallow gold coin. Most are eight to twelve inches down. I think the heavy weight compared to surface area means that when they go down they stay down except on ploughed ground. Trouble is any ploughing and the coins are certain to be scratched and devalued. Woodland (where the acid in the soil destroys copper coins) is good for getting gold coins in the best possible condition.

Those are some beautiful coins! I hope to find a real silver dollar some day. As for gold, well, the closest I've ever been to a gold coin was a gold colored Chuck E Cheese token, lol! I'm with Hoser though better add a Depends to my hunting equipment just in case!

I'm sure I'll find gold jewlery/rings/scrap before I ever find a gold coin, if I ever do that is. And I already know if I do find ANY type of gold coin, vintage/modern, you can bet I'll be dancin around like a 5yr old on Christmas morning.

I have two silver dollars, no gold coins yet but am working on it. Cladius.

Wow, looks like the gold's being found over there! I'm still hunting for a gold coin, haven't found one yet, just some silver, but looking at those great photos, inspires me to keep going! Great hunting to you all!
Cheers Angela
