WARNING for you guys, according to cops we are aliens...

I hunt at night quite a bit on the beaches, it's alot cooler and not many people around, always enjoy it. Probably every other time i go the cops walk up on me and excitedly ask " Find anything?", just REAL curious and friendly!

Darnit! They hijacked my thread! LOL well at least this one got started. Hopefully it won't get hostile.

I like night hunting. It's relaxing but I guess some places just shouldn't be detected at at night. It's a shame that the world is so suspicious now. Can't go out at night without people asking questions. :(

people complain about the current condition of the US quite a bit but i sure am glad i live here after reading that haha i couldnt imagine turning something i found on my own land in to the government

I haven't tried any night hunting. I can see why you would want to, and I can see why it would draw attention. Now if one could use nightvision goggles.....:roll:at least there wouldn't be the light to attract attention. But you sure would look like an alien with them on.

I detect at night qiut often and have never had any issues with it what so ever. I also pack a glock 26 where ever I go (detecting or not). I use a head lamp always on the LED bulb (not the red bulb). Have hunted parks, schools, lots, etc and only been aproached one time by police who asked what I've found. Course that was in a small coastal town. WOLF

Went out last night found the Usual clad. Going out tonight as well. What I like is you have the whole park to yourself! You can move that coil anywhere you please. Now that is bliss!

From my observations here's a list of different type cops:

Gorilla cop- Really big cop and a nice guy. good to have around when things go bad. not very smart though.

Tackle box cop- has more guns and gadgets hanging on his utility belt than Batman.

Nam cop-Wonderful guy to work with. Never gets upset about anything and doesn't take anything seriously. But don't ask him about his tour in Nam or other places, that will just set him off.

Crooked nose cop- this guy has had his nose broken more than a few times.

Evil Knievel cop- This guy wrecks cars all the time.

Pretty boy cop- He's always worried about his hair and the shine on his badge.

Sleepy cop-Can be easily found under shade trees and large shady areas. Always has the dark sunglasses on and the A/C cranking in the Patrol car during nap time.

Donut cop- Always hanging out at donut shops and out of shape. You can easily run away from this guy.

(This is for entertainment purposes only, I don't want to get banned like OldTown)

midnight detectors

To all of you out there who diss cops. Please ask the local police to let you ride with them for a few nights. You will find out why they are jumpy and sometimes brusque, They are sometimes scared as you are. get to know them and their nighttime problems. Its a whole nother world out there after dark. An old cop.

cool story..glad it wasn't me...lol might have gotten smart with the cop.

I almost did, but this forum has taught me that we all need to set an example so MDing can keep on going. It's the best hobby in the world, isn't it?

I like the classification of cops - that was pretty good. :)

You're completely incapable of shutting your mouth and leaving things well enough alone, aren't you? I think you probably fit the profile you just described.

Considering mine doesn't disparage an entire group, actually, it is.

Okay i have to ask ..why are so many people jumping on other people because of their option's i do believe this if a free form and WE all have a right to express ourselves and sure we all cant agree on what others think but doesn't mean we should be disrespectful to others feels and thoughts on a subject..

Sorry Bones you had to be frisked and told to leave for MD'ing they could of easy just done there jobs investigate whats was going on and then moved on.. 98% of cops tend to abuse there power and are scared to do there jobs like picking on the bad people like drug dealer's or gangs that are clearly visible..there just bully's and with out there guns and back up are straight :censored:.. i have been abused many times by police and not once was i breaking the law and i mean abused like shot guns to the head slammed to the ground for sitting on my steps with no explanation why :?::?: and if we fight back we're wrong :shock: by the way my nephew and good friend are NYC police..

I would love to hunt at night. I'm a second shift worker and I think it would be nice to get out after work during the summer. I just don't have the cohones to try it. I know some of the local law enforcement and have even volunteered to assist them with the use of the metal detector if ever needed. The local police department knows my name and where I live and are aware of my hobby. However I feel like I would be a target for harassment if I were seen at night out in the middle of a local school yard or around the buildings. You have to admit, It is odd to see one or two guys out in the middle of the night wondering around a school yard digging and searching. This type of activity certainly isn't the norm and that's what causes the big red flag for harassment.

Perhaps if one is going to hunt at night. Bigredoggg has given the best advise here.

To avoid this I recently started calling the local police and notifying them that I will be metal detecting in their town. This way if there is a problem they are already aware that I am at a certain location. This way I do not need to worry about some high strong police officer pulling a gun on me while Im out digging a hole.
Example =
Myself and the Crazyslasher went to a local area where he had some troubles in the past with the local law enforcment. Before we headed to the same area I called the local police for that town. The officer took down my name, cell number, make and model of car and plates. I told him we would be detecting and If there was an issue to please feel free to call me rather then waste their time or mine with a visit. We detected the large field without any issues this time. Not only did we have a decent time detecting, we both for the first time felt like we had nothing to worry about.

To keep the peace I take these measures. I want everyone safe. Even the valuable officers that protect the people. But some lines need to be drawn with the difficulty we face as detectorist. Its hard enough just to get permission, or to detect an area legally. When will this crap end.

Happy Hunting Everyone !!!! Be safe but be sure not to allow someone taking your rights away without "Just Cause".

Anyone else been felt up by an officer before? It sure isn't pleasant.

No, but I got strip searched at the Canadian border. Literally told me to "bend over and spread 'em". I'll take a frisking any day over that!

It's a long story, but the short version is that when I was about 20 years old 3 friends and I went fishing in Canada and borrowed one friend's dad's car. The border guard said that he found a marijuana seed in the car and strip searched us all. None of us smoke (anything) so we were not worried that he was going to find anything, but it was a little unnerving. Later, after some beer at the fish camp, it became hilarious.
