Something interesting happened to me about 20 minutes ago. I thought I'd share this with you. I went to a school 2 miles down the road from my house to MD a school I have done many many times at night with no problems, until tonight. My advice is at the bottom of the story, sorry for the long post in advance.

I got out the MXT and other equipment, turned on my red beam headlamp and started swinging. I got about 5 pieces of junk and then I see a car pull into the school and park behind my car. I notice the very distinct Crown Victoria headlights. "Great. Now the cops are going to think I'm doing something bad." So I just kept on swinging like normal and got a solid half dollar signal! Then a light from the cop points right at me. I'm thinking "oh great, what does he want". He tells me to drop what I'm carrying and put my hands on my head as if I were holding an RPG. I comply and he comes over and frisks me down very thoroughly....

He then proceeds to flash his light on my MXT. He's all like, "what's that?". I said flatly, "a metal detector". I told him to search my pouch. He did and found garbage and an unopened brand new pack of AAA batteries. He asked where I got them from. Where else? The store of course! (didn't say that but was thinking it). I think he was suggesting I had stole them.

After he tells me how suspicious my car was parked and how it looked with a guy walking around swinging a metal object with a red light on the head, he takes my license and tells me he is going to check on any known warrants for my name. I tell him, "please be my guest, do you need my insurance also?". I'm being super nice to him. As he's checking my information another squad car pulls in! "Wonderful, I'm being arrested for no reason. Awesome". Turns out the little weiner guy all of 5 foot 5 called in backup, for a METAL DETECTORIST! HA! I guess the Lesche did the trick. He said that from the road he thought a guy was holding a shotgun at a woman on the ground and that I was like an alien because of the red headlight. So guys, we're a bunch of aliens holding women hostage I guess. I can live with that so long as I keep finding the goods!

When all was said and done I told them to keep up the good work and he said sorry he had to tell me to leave and stuff. I told him the summer heat makes me hunt at night - he seemed to understand but it still annoyed me. This was my only chance tonight to hunt for a while. :(

To end my post: Please if you're going to hunt at night anywhere, make sure the area is either well lit and open or HIDE your car better than I did tonight and do NOT hunt anywhere near the road. I had been doing that mostly but there have been times where a cop has passed me at night and I was detecting WITH bright headlamp and they just kept going. I guess this cop was just looking for trouble where he could find it. In the country by an old middle school. Anyways, HH and hope you don't get frisked like I did! :D

You should have told him the metal detector was a "gay-dar" and then proceed to swing it over his feet. Maybe the metal eyelets for his shoelaces would have set the detector off pretty strong. Tell him "looks like it's working". What the heck, he was going to kick you out anyways.

:lol::lol:

Alein huh?:?:

I think once the cop asked where I bought my batteries it would have put me over the edge. I can't stand that type of stuff.

Been there....

I have noticed a large amount of attention (cops) I have been getting while detecting latley. We all have run into or atleast found out that someone was watching us and just felt the need to call the local police to find out what we were doing.
One of my last outings consisted of an officer sitting parked next to the field I was detecting for almost 4 hours. What a waste of tax dollars........
To avoid this I recently started calling the local police and notifying them that I will be metal detecting in their town. This way if there is a problem they are already aware that I am at a certain location. This way I do not need to worry about some high strong police officer pulling a gun on me while Im out digging a hole.
Example =
Myself and the Crazyslasher went to a local area where he had some troubles in the past with the local law enforcment. Before we headed to the same area I called the local police for that town. The officer took down my name, cell number, make and model of car and plates. I told him we would be detecting and If there was an issue to please feel free to call me rather then waste their time or mine with a visit. We detected the large field without any issues this time. Not only did we have a decent time detecting, we both for the first time felt like we had nothing to worry about.
I know this is an extreme measure and WE as detectorist shouldnt have to go this far to protect our rights to detect but I am not about to loose my life over a hole in the ground due to a trigger happy person.
I'm sorry to read that Bonesquat had to go through a pat down in order to convince an officer that what was very apparent (metal detecting) was the only thing that was taking place. If they cant tell the difference between a gun and a detector then they should re-think their decision to be an officer. I gues this is why we read about people being hurt when violence isnt needed.

To keep the peace I take these measures. I want everyone safe. Even the valuable officers that protect the people. But some lines need to be drawn with the difficulty we face as detectorist. Its hard enough just to get permission, or to detect an area legally. When will this crap end.

Happy Hunting Everyone !!!! Be safe but be sure not to allow someone taking your rights away without "Just Cause".

Thats awesome. We have female cops here that are actually cute. Think I'll try this trick tonight. WOLF

Really!? You got it good then! All it is around here is mostly male cops.

I night hunt often..... I have a head lamp but do not use it really.... My light is the light on the Garret Pro Pointer. The Metal detector "see's" for me..... I am mostly in darkness ..... Which makes you a lot less noticed. I always check my finds when I get home.

Wolf, maybe you're just getting older and they're starting to look better. lol

We have several female hogs in KW. I can assure you they did not give up modeling careers to pursue law enforcement.

Too bad the bone had to get rousted. Police in general go over the line more times than not. Just watch COPS on Fox some time. No miranda and they always profile kids on bicycles. No other reason but the kid has a backpack. Stop, beating, search. Pretty much every time.

:lol::lol::lol: We know Key West women are known for there luscious softball player smiles.

People fear what they don't understand. You gotta admit that someone that doesn't know anything about metal detecting sees someone at night with A metal object And A red light is gonna be A little suspicious. Once these cops got A call they had to follow procedure. I know it seems overboard and probably is, but they were just doing the job according to how they were trained. Unfortunately discretion can't be used by officers like it could in the past(to much liability.)
I was in law enforcement for A while and that's one reason I got out. I'm just not A "by the book" type of person.
I hunt at night occasionally and haven't had any problems YET, But if I do I will just be polite and cooperative because they're just doing their job.
HH everyone,Disconnected

Was this really necessary? I'm okay with your outspoken opinions in other threads, but this is just insulting. Mods, please delete that post, if you will. I'm probably being oversensitive, but I've known too many hard working, honest, and down-right HEROIC officers in my life to not take offense at that garbage.

Really! Are you serious? Guess it depends on where you live. And that is a fact. Most of the "heros" around here are egotistical asses that write tickets and do prostitute stings rather than do something about gang activity. I know, I've seen it enough times. The ones you are talkin about are few and far between. Or work in the small or $$$$$$$$ towns. WOLF

Atleast you can get away with night hunting where you are at. All the parks around here close at dusk. No one allowed in after dark. Signs posted everywhere.

I guess it depends on where you live, but around here if you're metal detecting at a school after dark, I would be surprised if the police didn't investigate. Remember that 95% of the population don't know what we're doing.

I would expect a cop to investigate a dark figure on a public field at night. I would not expect to get frisked or told to leave. For what? After you have explained yourself and presented your equipment and ID'd yourself, to be sent home from public turf is an overreach by the cop. It shows a basic lack of understanding of a citizen's rights. It also shows how cops get so heady with their power that they lose all common sense and common touch.

As for those who think cops are heroes? I do not agree at all. They get into police work because it pays so very well and has a great retirement.

As for those who think cops are heroes? I do not agree at all. They get into police work because it pays so very well and has a great retirement. It also appeals to high school bullies and those with self esteem problems. The police forces do have some good men. The problem is the good man or woman is overwhelmed my the gung-ho, web gear-wearing tough guy out to exercise his inner demons on some poor dope who isn't harming a fly and just wants to be left alone.

You're completely incapable of shutting your mouth and leaving things well enough alone, aren't you? I think you probably fit the profile you just described.

Sorry Toast99, but your opinion is no better than mine.

Considering mine doesn't disparage an entire group, actually, it is.
