$$$$ Would you return it?

Lets say that you find an item, Maybe a ring for example and to keep it interesting lets throw in some greed or temptation factor and say that it is worth 10 - 20 or maybe even $30,00.00 or maybe it's just a class ring that originally sold for a few hundred dollars, Bottom line this ring means alot to some one and you can tell it is a fresh drop. What would you do? Would you claim finders keepers or would you make an effort to find the owner by searching adds etc or maybe even posting an add of your own which didn't include a detailed description of said ring ? Keep in mind that there may or may not be a name engraved in the ring as i want to cover all possible angles to the find here. I would like to keep this as not a legality question but strictly a moral question ( What would you do ) without hearing well they probably had insurance.
I look forward to your replies

So popatop, what would YOU do in a scenario such as this?

If I could be certain who the owner is I would return it. I found a money order last weekend for 250.00 outside a bank not filled out could of signed my name and cashed it but MY wife and I went into the bank and had them trace it to who bought it and they found the guy, he was a really old guy who uses money orders to pay all his bills and I feel much better knowing he got it back:yes:

If you do find one and want to bring it back, bring it to my ghetto park. people always ask me if i found their ring(s), and i never have any to give them

If it were an obvious fresh and identifiable find i would do my best to return it. If it was obviously there for along time with no way to identify the owner then i would keep it.
Whether finding a lost item or the clerk giving me to much change back i feel good about doing what i feel is right which in my case is returning the item Thats just the way i am. Life is great.

popatop, well, forget value for a moment. I mean, so what $100, $1000, or $10,000. In each and every case, your question essentially remains the same. You're getting dangerously close to us all having to ask ourselves: why do we even detect?

For me detecting is just for fun. I like the finds, but it isn't solely about the cash value. It is kinda like fishing. I have many thousands of dollars wrapped up in fly fishing and fly tying stuff. I spend a fair amount of time and money traveling to fish. I do lots of research on fly patterns, fish habits, rivers and fishing gear. I have caught some amazing fish. I am a catch and release fisherman. Why do I bother fishing? Because for that moment that the fish is mine to keep or put back, I am just happy to be there. I could have saved all that money and sat home watching fishing shows, and bought all the fish I could eat.

I will sell some finds, keep some, and have returned a gold class ring. If the owner can be easily tracked down, I choose to return it. I am not going to make it my life's work to find the owner, but I will give it my honest effort.

Hear, hear!

If it was about the money, I wouldn't do this. I'd quintuple my hourly rate working fasts food. Joy, honor, integrity; those are things you can't buy.

I always try to find the owners. I post ads and run them constantly that say jewelry found on beach. So far I've never sold a thing I found. I keep hoping someone will come up to me and say hey last year I lost my great great great great great grandfathers ring right here. How cool would it be if I could tell them I have it and they can have it back.

I've been able to return 4 class rings and 3 wedding rings as well as an I-pad, a galaxy S 4 phone and a set of keys. :)

:goodpost:
Nothing against you or you ball field uptown Maybe it was the original presentation of that particular thread and the way you came off but with that said i do understand that you have a big personal interest and time invested. I can assure you that i wouldn't think of detecting the playing field itself this time of the year. Oh and for what it's worth i have enjoyed several of your posts since then. Thanks for your contribution to this topic.

So do I, and I raise them to understand what's yours is yours, what's someone elses, is someone elses

Why did you piss on my parade about my moral values when it comes to mine and others times manacuring a baseball field then?

Atta Boy!!! Because it's the right thing to do.

I'm the same way also, but again, you rode my A$$ pretty good when your buddies were busting my stones about my feeling digging up a ballfield. You obviously have the ability to understand right from wrong, and are doing a fine job understanding it if you would make an effort to return someones valuables. Valuables are not just determined by cash value.......they are also determined by judgement value, called ethics and morals, which means thinking of others. I like the thread. Not a big fan with the lack of a 100% of the MDers doing the right thing though...

Great post, and I've done the same when it comes to hunting, fishing, and metal detecting. They are hobbies, not jobs. I've let so many 4lb brook trout live because they gave me the excitement of the day. Finding that ring and returning it would be the same.

For me.......I would search the internet, checked news papers and put up an ad. myself. What I would not do is intentionally get the police involved. That becomes one more instance where I have to HOPE that someone elses moral and ethical values were in the same spot. It looks like , based on the posts here........that would be a 50/50 shot at best. I'm not willing to take that gamble. Good thread poptop. For those land loving pirates.......how do you think this looks to people that might be thinking about closing down detecting on your precious beaches? A little google search and now they've figured out what you guys are all about. Tearing up sports fields, and praying of finders keepers. Not a great perception to those not involved in the hobby, matter a fact it's not a great perception to those IN the hobby. It must be hard to type and hold on to that tree branch like a buzzard huh???

I live from pay check to pay check and if I found a ring or whatever that's been under ground and I dig it up and it's worth a lot of money damn right I'm gonna get paid! It's a dog eat dog world and this dog is hungry!

I personally would not post an ad myself but rather search for ads. If the ring is significant to the person who lost it then they would make an attempt to find it. If the ring is high in value then chances are they have insurance on it and it will be replaced. I would have no issues keeping a ring of value if after making a decent attempt to find the owner had failed.

~Are you still focused on DoctorTecter's ring? Let it go buddy ;)

^^^^ This........ Make an honest attempt, but if no luck, then in the stash it goes......
