Just carry it the 1/4 mile, leaving anything unattended on the beach especially during S.B. is asking to to lose it. 
If your that worried take a cab from the hotel and call one when your done at the beach.
Or buy a back packer type pack and mod it suite your needs and keep it with you.

Where I am from if you leave something on the beach and walk away theres a 90% chance it will be gone or shifted through by bums by the time you get back to it.Leave the bag at home.

My practice is never bring more than I can carry. A small backpack or shoulder bag with a good tool belt and there should be no problem at all.

grew up in LA lived there 25 years
Ditto the back pack. You might want to visit a store along the way and its not very easy carrying an assembled MD and wired earphones inside the store in one hand. You might want to look at something, or purchase something and you'll have to juggle your wallet. You might also meet some bikini girl that needs some help carrying her cooler.
