Shooting at the park while detecting

I live about 30 minutes west of ST. Louis and the difference is like night and day. Still plenty of historic places to hunt , lots of parks , safe with little crime. Just a bit farther out from me is a lot of smaller towns and cities ,many were part of the old route 66 highway , others along the river were once big river front towns when the steam ships ruled , now small cities with a fraction of the population they had in their boom days.

…...maybe hire private security patrols to keep park visitors and detectorists safe

In our county the county keeps basketball courts out of the parks because it attracts violence. The county police advise home owner associations in the county to not put up basketball courts for the same reason.

That is what I told my wife. They need to take a backhoe and rip up the basketball court. This would remove the majority of the park's problem.

Police officers in your area go around unarmed because it is so safe?

The police are required to carry firearms. I can't remember the last time we had a shooting here in my town, if ever. What the police do or don't do has nothing to do with you.

Bottom line, you're not the law and should never think about taking the law into your own hands. Think there's a problem? Either call the cops or get the heck out of the area. This isn't the Old West. Those days are long gone. We live in a civilized society now.

It's kind of hard to stay away from my neighborhood since I live here.

Time to move or time to stop detecting there, if your neighborhood is so dangerous you feel the need to arm yourself while detecting.

You may live in a civilized society, I don't. I live in an area with almost daily shootings. I don't think I've made it a month without a drive by shooting within a block of my home. A 6 year old girl was kidnapped raped and murdered just down the street. The big deal now is stealing catalytic converters. Dozens are stolen every night. Even the Sheriff recommends taking a gun safety course and arming yourself. It may be safe in your neighborhood to be without a gun, but in my hood it's not safe. Just last month a neighbor shot 2 men breaking into his home. They were armed, he got lucky getting off the first shots. Who knows what could have happened in the 10 minutes it takes the police to arrive. I've come close a couple of times to having to shoot meth-head zombies trying to get in the house. I don't want to but if I have to take the law into my own hands I will. No one else will do it for me. I am responsible for my own safety.

Here is some information on ST. Louis Missouri , / 1. St. Louis, Missouri
St. Louis is typically known for it’s range of barbecue restaurants and blues music, but it’s also got another trick up it’s sleeve…one that probably isn’t advertised as much to tourists. It lands in the number one spot on several different lists as being the most dangerous city in America. Since this city ranks as the most dangerous city in America, at least based on crime data from 2017, we also consider it to be the most dangerous U.S. city to travel to in 2019.
Business Insider writes that St. Louis, Missouri had 91.5 violent crimes per 10,000 people in 2017. There were 205 homicides reported in St. Louis that same year which isn’t actually the highest number for a U.S. city in 2017, but once it’s adjusted to it’s population, it ends up being the highest murder rate in the country. According to 24/7 Wall St., St. Louis has a murder rate of 67 per 100,000 people which is extremely high, especially when it’s compared to the national average of 5 per 100,000. On top of all the violent crimes, the murder count for St. Louis in 2017 was 6,461 or 2,082 per 100,000 residents. This is the highest violent crime rate of any major U.S. city.

I've had this argument many times on the "other " metal detecting site and not going to do it here. I'm sorry that you live in such a crappy neighborhood. Maybe it's time your city cleaned house and got some real law enforcement to go in there and clean up the area.

Our cops are far from perfect, but they actually do a good job of catching the bad guys. The problem is unless it's murder, rape or some other heinous class A felony they are out of jail before the cops go home. Almost all of the criminals that do something bad enough to make the news have lengthy records are on probation or parole and they either get more probation or a 120 days "shock time". The guy who stole my scooter was on probation for stealing scooters and awaiting trial for stealing scooters when he got caught stealing scooters once again. They gave him more probation.
I know I'm not going to change your mind on whether or not a person should carry a gun, but I hope you can understand why some people feel the need for protection is legitimate.

police are often restricted as to what they can do.

Seems like in many areas the police have their hands tied as to what they can do, I know in the ST. Louis area any time they shoot a criminal the locals start protesting the police and shouting Black lives matter. There is almost no cooperation from the comunity in solving crimes. No body ever saw anything , they have a no snitch attitude . A large number of murders go unsolved and they have a hard time hiring new police officers to replace the ones that leave to go to work in better areas. You couldn't pay me to live in ST. Louis , I live about 30 minutes away in a very safe area with a well armed and staffed police department. It is unfortunate the crime is slowly spreading our way , they wanted to expand the metro link out to the county we voted it down don't want the crime dropped off in our area.

this is true, unless your life is placed in immediate danger, and you are being "attacked" then you have to protect yourself. in this particular circumstance, "smart money" says "beat feet" and screw!....fast!... BEFORE you are forced to react!

making the list 3 times

Missouri made the list 3 times. Kansas City, Springfield and St. Louis. St. Louis being the #1 most dangerous city in the country. GO CARDINALS!!!!

Having 3 cities out of 25 not a good selling point for Missouri , you sure don't see the crime rate mentioned in the ads for tourist. We don't even go down town to see the Cardinals baseball team play or the champion Blues hockey team play . When we have family come in from out of state and they want to see the ST. Louis arch or ST. Louis zoo we go as early in the day as possible and out way before dark. Just don't feel safe down there at any time of the day.

I do agree that some places are pretty dangerous. Ever watch "The First 48"? People getting murdered for a cell phone, a bicycle or a lousy 20 bucks. Unreal that someone would end a life for money or material goods. Then they get 45 years in jail for the crime. How can you live with that? You took a life for nothing and wasted your life all at the same time. So incredibly stupid...

I stay out of St' Louis as well. The only times I went there was to go to my doctor's appointments. Besides that, I don't go there. This old world is getting worse by the day.
