2 days ago I stopped at a house and asked for and received permission to hunt a house built in the 30s. On 5 acres I only covered a small area finding a wheat penny and some clad.
Today I returned with a buddy who is learning the hobby. Immediately he found a wheat and a metal bowl.
I found a few Memorials and then got a strong signal. I started to dig and realized there was a telephone pole nearby hidden by some trees. I shy away from hunting under telephone poles because I know the linemen often drop their trash and I assumed this was a length of wire. However soon I was calling my buddy over.
It was a scabbard. Based on length and the size of the slit where the blade would enter, it was likely for a dagger. It was ornate, heavy and appeared to be silver. However after cleaning the clay away I knew it wasn’t silver. Still, what was it used for?
Nearby I found a nice coin spill of 4 quarters, 3 dimes, 2 pennies and a nickel. Sadly, all were clad.
Later I pulled a nice copper buckle.
Any ideas on the purpose of the scabbard? I’d like to know.
