Unfortunately, I will be getting out of this enjoyable hobby. With a little one here, another on the way, and increased job responsibilities, I literally have no time to hunt. I really enjoyed my time in it and want to thank everyone in this forum for their help and knowledge they have provided the last couple years. So, I will be putting the AT Pro and all my gear on ebay shortly and will hopefully be able to get back into the hobby at some point down the road when I have more time. Thanks again, good luck and happy hunting.

Quitting the hobby

At least you have your priorities in order. As enjoyable as the hobby is, if you can't enjoy it you need to take a break. Wishing you well in your endeavors and hope you will be able to return in the future. The hobby will be here if you decide to try it again.:D

My life would suck without detecting. Sometimes it's best to stand back and think about things. If you don't have any spare time you will grow old quick. I used to work 3 jobs at one time. Dude make time for yourself.

You will be back ;) enjoy your break as it will make your return like the first day you got your detector

Your equipment,, if it is paid for. It is not eating anything. Granted with a tighter schedule made for by additional responsibilities,, it is understandable.

I do think sometimes when folks for what ever reason don't have the time they want or think they need to detect,,, in their minds sometimes they think they can't compete or maybe stay as sharp.

Hard to lay the hobby down entirely,,. It can eat at you at times.

My only recommendation is just think through your situation,,do what makes you happy and what you can live with or without in this case.

There is I guess always tomorrow,, or is there?

Life is short-- play hard.

Enjoy your new treasures, but I can tell you from experience that you will Need to go detecting sometimes, for your benefit and theirs.

Everyone needs 30 mins - an hour of 'me time' sometimes... for your sanity... they'll thank you later lol

This is very true! After selling my first set of detectors when life hit me hard, I spent the following two years wishing I had never sold them. Wish I just put them in the closet

Unless the finances are tight with the new little one hold on to your equipment. Once it is gone you may realise that it fit into family life better than you thought. The value will still be there if you decide to sell later.

I haven't swung in almost 2 weeks now. If it isn't a game, scrimmage, practice, overtime, chore or something or another lately. I know that the madness will end soon and I'll get plenty opportunities for a hunt again.
Hold onto your gear though. you'll regret it that one day soon when you wish you still had it.
But if you are gonna sell, why put it on the bay where the fees will get you? Put your stuff up here and give a member an opportunity.
Good luck

I agree with Joee5. At Pros have been selling great on this forum. Most seem to be bringing very good money. And selling fast. And best of all there is no fee.

Well...most of us old guys have been in your shoes...All of a sudden responsibilities come along and a Man steps up and takes care of the Family first. Its definitely a Life changing commitment when a guy thinks it through like you have....Some guys never do, they just keep going on and doing what ever the hell they want, so Good On Ya!

As an old guy who made it through, I humbly offer this:...dont run clear off the other side of the scale.

Now, when it comes to YOU...keeping you sane and healthy, for the good of everybody, you gotta have something! At least this Sport has a 'payback' of sorts...its healthy, you can do it anywhere at anytime without expending any money except on travel...You know you will find something of value sooner or later that will come in handy for your Family.

Its not like Golf, or Hunting or Fishing or Bowling or anything most guys do for fun with a huge investment of time and treasure. Your gear is about as worth much as a decent deer rifle...you should NOT sell it I think...unlike a rifle, your Pro will pay itself off over and over through the years of squeezing in an early morning hunt a few times/week/month...

It may lead you into friendships that open new career doors for you even...Think about it a little...You will be pulling the Plow for the next 20yrs...may as well have a detector along just in case an opportunity arises..One big ring or gold coin could make the difference in making a bill or not....The Lord provides, even for sparrows in the field, but you gotta be out in the Field a little.
Mud.

I agree with all of the posts here. I would recommend to hold onto the detector etc.. for awhile unless you need to sell for the money (things happen and the need for money to support the family is very understandable). You never know, you might find an hour or two of free time, granted with more job respons, and babies it will be far and few but sometimes you will find the time. Plus we all need "me" time maybe once every two weeks for an hour or two.

I completely understand your situation. I raised seven kids and a couple of their friends too:roll: between that and work it was rough finding time to do my things.

I hope the best for you.

I wanted to add this to my post but forgot... old age kicking in. This is a good point made by Mud (shoot did I say something good about Mud???:shock::laughing:). It is rough raising kids and with the economy the way it is, its getting harder to make ends meet. A good find might pay that one bill, buy that new car seat, or even put food on the table. Hell a couple of good hunts and only finding clad helps out too.....

Good luck and God bless your family. Hopefully in several years when kids get older you can introduce them to this wonderful hobby.

Hey! Heres a little bit of a different angle to consider...Kids are the PERFECT props for a detectorist! You make it an activity for the whole Family!

I can see you saying, "Honey, I'm gonna take the kids down to the Park for an hour or so, why dont you take a nice bath and relax a bit?" Theres GOLD in Totlots! Money too! Your kids will be out getting some running around time, you can detect playgrounds without looking like a creepy old man. You will have many wonderful adventures finding toads and turtles and just being outside together, while your Wife gets some alone time! You can buy the kids icecream with the clad!

You WILL be finding jewelry to bring home to Her...You will be finding things you can post here for sale even...I bought a cool silver broach off a Forum Member last Dec for the Wifes Christmas present even! Think I paid $20...anyway, more than melt, but Everybody was happy with the transaction..

Imagine the Upside possibilities of staying in this Sport...especially with Kids and a Wife! Do Not Drop out! Your kids will remember their time spent treasure hunting with Dad, and your Wife will love your Family involvement and giving her some time off...Win-Win!

Most guys start drinking, Work, Life and responsibilities tends to make them mean if they dont find any Familial joy...and buddy, that there is one tough road you dont want to go down!

I squeeze a lunch time hunt in whenever I can; and sometimes can get a couple hours in. It's doable (2 kids here). Good luck anyway you slice it and congrats on the family!

I left for a while do to health reasons... but for the last two years I have constantly eye searched the ground, sized up any old house I drove by, and almost daily dreamed about what's under my feet!
so with that said, once a MDer... always in your blood... congrats on making the tough decision, the right one... and maybe see ya back in the future when life allows it!
