old pocket spill, probably my most memorable dig ever

thanks IDX

Incredible hunt Bob, sorry I didn’t see this sooner! THESE are the kinds of things that keep us coming back for more...the POSSIBILITY is always there. Think of the hoards of detectorists who are now doing something else because they weren’t coming home with 10 silvers a day anymore. Here we are, very happy to dig ONE a hunt, sometimes one a WEEK! To run across a spill like THIS? The odds are so low it’s almost incalculable. But there it is, and all we have to do is find the next silver...wherever it may be.
Congratulations in a huge way, what a thrill that must have been!

Thanks again . And very nice paragraph to sum up the hobby. It IS the possibility and the thrill....I can't even count how many multi hour drives I've taken to try a different park in a different older town and come back home empty......And No it sure isn't for everyone....and yeah I'll bet I've spoke to a dozen guys at work who have a metal detector collecting dust in their closet. Like you say there just isn't the gobs and gobs of silver coins laying in the parks anymore, and in all reality , is silver really all that special anymore?? So yeah most people aren't gonna give up their valuable precious time to be up a couple bucks or half an ounce of silver.....
and that's fine with me.....;)
And btw, yeah that dig was an awesome thrill for me. Actually when I got to the area of the target and saw plastic and trash my heart dropped....then I saw the green coin , then a few rubs and realized what it was.....it sure made my day. I actually would have been content with a little Barber dime.....needless to say I wasn't expecting a dig like that.....that may be as close to a silver dollar as I'll ever get......6 years and 525 silver coins and no big one yet........but I'm super grateful for the awesome stuff I've unearthed .......
Thanks again for the reply........and hey, happy hunting......:D:D

For some reason I never saw your question.

Those coins really were a terrible mess. I really wasn't sure what was on them. I'd never seen silver coins look green like that.
So.....soap and water did nothing. I tried baking soda, vinegar, CLR. Tried the baking soda in hot water and in the foil trick and the green was completely unphased.
At this point I was getting a bit frustrated and I was anxious to get a little more detail to show on them , but I had also looked them up and realized they really were not any type of key date coins so I started to not be gentile with them anymore....but still the green matter was not coming off what so ever. Finally I just said whatever....I'll just hit it with jewelry cleaner. I dabbed a Q-tip in silver cleaner and rubbed the walker a bit and finally noticed some green on the Q-tip. So I spent the next hour or so scrubbing with Q-tips and the jewelry cleaner but got tired of the slow progress and started using a toothbrush and a cloth and got the coins mostly cleaned off.
There still are a few black spots that I left on them cus my fingers were tired of scrubbing.....
Anyway, for the life of me I'm not sure what exactly the green was. What I can surmise is that there may have been a chemical or dye or maybe just the natural decomposition of the leather in the wallet that caused a chemical reaction, adhered or oxidized or did something to the coins......
