Unseasonably warm weather (mid 60s) was forecast for east of the Rocky Mountains, so my friend Jason from Helena (uses Manticore) and I (AT Pro) headed up toward Canada to get in a rare winter Montana detecting hunt. We detected for about three partial days, and both of us did well. Jason really slayed the silver on the first day, getting TEN silver coins, all dimes... 2 Barbers, 7 Mercs, and 1 Silver Rosie. He also pulled about 30 wheat cents, so had a very good Silver/Wheat ratio going! I ended up riding the Wheat Train for most of the day, I managed to find 2 Silver Rosies, and almost 30 wheaties, so my ratio was pretty poor! The coins in this area of northern Montana are pretty shallow, so a guy has to dig pretty much everything above a Zincoln and that means getting a lot of copper memorial cents whle chasing silvers and wheaties. I probably ended up with over 150 copper memorials and 75 wheat cents on this trip.

The next day proved good for both of us, Jason found 6 more silver coins (all dimes - Mercs and Rosies) along with a Sterling horse / good luck pin, and of course another 30 or so Wheat Cents. Another cool find for Jason was a pre-pro Green River Whiskey token. He also got a 1917-D Buffalo Nickel. I managed 7 Silvers, Mercs and Rosies along with a worn Standing Liberty Quarter, the only quarter found between the two of us. I also pulled a Sterling and Turquoise small ring, and an unusual Illinois Toll Road large copper token. I only dug one nickel on the whole trip as we were chasing high conductors. As usual, the 99% Copper Canadian Cents fooled us many a time as they pretty much ring up as a silver dime. Get a guy's hopes up only to be dashed! We only found Canadian cents back to King George 6th, along with a fair amount of early Queen Elizabeth pennies. Odd that we didn't get any Canadian Silvers this time.

The last day was somewhat short as we both had a fair amount of driving to get home, and the weather forecast was for a coming winter snow advisory, so we both headed out in early afternoon. This last partial day gave Jason 2 silver dimes and more wheaties, while I had a pretty good day with 4 Silver Dimes - 1 Barber, 2 Mercs, and one Rosie.

Folks were friendly and accomondating, we probably had 25 yard permissions, which, surprisingly, gave up few coins. Out of the 31 Silver coins, I believe only 3 or 4 came from yards, the rest from the town's curb strips. The weather was perfect.... mid 60s sunny, warm, a light breeze, and great townsfolks to talk with and get permissions. With winter weather here again, getting out again to detect may be some days or weeks into the future. First pic shows me holding my Stander (found in curb strip in front of a 1951 home) - look! No Snow and lots of blue sky and sunshine! The rest show my other finds, a lot of coins there! Last pic is a summary picture from Jason as he is busy over the weekend. Thank you for your interest!

Wow David! As usual, you seem to be able to knock 'em dead no matter where you go. Congratulations. Hope you can continue to get out for more trips earlier than last year. Your Stander looks almost identical to the one I found the other day (slick with no date). Hope we can get out together sometime in the not too distant future.

Thank you Gale! Hope you can soon return to detecting, and yep, when I saw your Standing Liberty I wondered if I dug it's brother here in Montana!
WOW just WOW, that's a sh*t ton of keeper coins, looks like fun.
