Know of any non-illegal metal detecting location in Virginia

Nope. I treat my own locale the exact same way. I consider md'ing to be "kind" and "respectful". Also healthy, educational, innocuous, non-harmful, and nutritious :)

I don't believe I've ever seen that side of you. You seem very hostile to any authority (and often to anyone who suggests obeying the law) and make up lots of What-If metal detecting scenarios that inevitably end in trying to convince your victim to ignore the consequences of getting caught. All that from safely in your chair by your computer from many miles and several jurisdictions away. This is especially egregious when foreign non-1st world governments are involved.

Well, cool thing. I live in Virginia. My house was built in the 1890's. I had a friend dig up a part of the front yard, and he found some old items. I can't wait to get a detector and dig the rest. The man the street is named after lived in my house. Rumor has it that back in the day he charged people for traveling down this street. Can't wait.

... (and often to anyone who suggests obeying the law) .....

Strange that you could say this. Because if you review my stance /posts on this, you will see that I say over & over & over again, "look up the laws/rules for oneself". How much more law-abiding could a person be, than that ? :?:

Where we differ, I think, is the ancillary stuff that *might* apply. Eg.: alter, deface, cultural heritage, harvest /remove, etc.... But if/when there were a true explicit rule "no md'ing", that someone looks up on their own (and not subject themselves to arbitrary whim), then sure: Don't detect. How much more law-abiding can a person be than that ? :?:

And yes, there is bound to be "locker room" talk (poking fun at archies, or avoiding those that might gripe, etc...). I'm the first to confess guilt on that level. But as for if an explicit/specific law/rule existed ? No, not guilty of that.

Hello everyone I hope you’re doing well and digging some awesome relics! I just wanted to know if anybody that’s from or around Virginia goes to a place in Virginia where it’s not illegal to metal detect. I understand that Virginia has some serious laws about metal detecting here, due to the fact that Virginia is the oldest of all stars, but I have a feeling there’s at least 1 or 2 places in Virginia. Anyways, if you know of a place and wouldn’t mind sharing the location that would be awesome! Good luck everyone and happy hunting to all!

Tom I've been in TN and VA for most of my 67 years. I agree with your don't ask don't tell in some locations. But VA is known to cuff you and stuff you. Sometimes after they beat the H out of you. Lots of people call VA the communist state for a reason. Great people and beautiful country but walk softly. My advice is if you want proof, take your detector go on a vacation in VA and try don't ask don't tell. VA is not like CA where anything goes. Your dealing with mountain justice there. That's home town knowledge speaking. Good hunting.

cladman,
I know it's the Commonwealth State. I meant no offense. But the joke has been for as many years as I can remember, the communist state because of the strict laws. I love VA. and the people. It is great place to visit and the people are second to non. I lived in NE TN and worked in VA. Most of my friends are in VA. Good hunting.

Apparently some folks have trouble distinguishing between the phrases "look up the law" from "go ahead and break the law".
Words matter, Especially to the legal types.

New Folks, please don't listen to people who try to get you in trouble. Do your own due diligence and don't let the haters laugh it up while hiding behind a keyboard.

.... "go ahead and break the law"....

KinTN : Please enlighten us. Can you please link us to any thread where someone said to "break the law" ? I must have missed it. Thus I'm sure you have links, eh ?

If a law truly says "No md'ing", then by all means , don't detect. Where have you seen anyone saying something to the contrary ? :?:

Too many to choose from on too many forums, Tom. If you really want to see one, just pull up your first post in a thread and pick one at random. Odds are, youll have what you want.

Loudoun County here. I know for a fact parks are off limits here.

I had police called on me for briefly detecting in a out of the way Fairfax park when I first got my detector and wanted to test it out. Saw a lady watching me and got that feeling... as I wasn't sure at the time of the laws (totally my fault) so I just left. Was just pulling out in the car when a cop car came *screaming* through the park (on a sidewalk!) and into the parking lot and came right up inches behind me and followed me out. Positive they ran my plates, but didn't pull me over. Never went back to Fairfax again, still not even sure of what you can detect there but even if its legal I won't go.

Stick to private spots in NoVa IMO.

On misdemeanors, the officer has to actually witness the "crime" or get you to admit to it before he can charge you. (yes, there are some rare exceptions). If he doesn't, he will have to go thru the DA. And if anyone ever went to That much trouble for the horrid crime of misdemeanor metal detecting, I'd like to read about it!
You did good to trust your instincts and leave when you did.

Yep, and that's been my point all along. Its metal detecting....not worth trespassing, violating law, arguing over, or getting into a whizzing match about.

There are other spots, go find one you don't need to fight to hunt. People want to talk about being a good representative of the hobby, but how is making a big stink over it accomplishing that?

If ones life revolves strictly around detecting so much, that then need to make that big a deal over it, they may want to consider an additional hobby or two.

...Historical speaking...The great Trespassers of old are favored and rewarded and applauded...even have streets and cars and cities named after them!...Back then, trespassing was encouraged! What Happened to us? Soy? BPA in the baby bottles?, flouride? Making everybody nowadays timid and compliant? Low Tee?

Sea of Cortez! Ponce De Leon Dr!...Desoto!....Columbus Ohio!, Hannibal Mo! Houston TX!...etc...

The timid law abiders and permission askers dont lead a very interesting life and go into the dust unknown, unloved and unrecognized...good thing too, punishment for a boring life! Not worthy of naming a street after!...

We dont want to promote this kind of behavior within our Sport!..Falling under fear of the Rule of Law is a Mental constraint! We are the Pirates and Explorers and Lone Hunters!...

The remnants of us Manly Men dont apply to this conversation, its just silly, we dont ask or care what others think, we are operating from a historical context.....So Yeah, I'm hunting this damned totter, gonna conquer the hell out of it! Grab myself a few pennies! I dont care what you say!.

Gatchaman, reviewing your old post, I see that ... ultimately ... there was indeed a rule in your city . Implemented in 2002, for ... I wonder why ? But anyhow: Yours is a case of how someone, with the magic of google, could have found it. It's now doubt available for the public to find, in written form. Thus your booting (if someone was skittish) is not a case of an example of: "I should have asked can I? ". Instead it's a case of: "Could have found that info via bit of sleuthing, if I was skittish".

But leave it to mud-puppy to get us all laughing :toofunny:
