This is exactly what I'm talking about. It's successful for YOU and only YOU. Not your employees. C'mon man , you're that oblivious as to why your phone doesn't ring for $15hr doing tree work ? Maybe in 1982 sure , that was good money. Just by your statement woodbutcher , I can tell you don't respect the people that work for you. You will always have bad apples. I once let a guy go for being on the company phone doing personal business for about 2hrs a day for 3 weeks. So I know what your talking about. Those people are not the norm. But I just gotta say......your company Christmas parties must suck !
In 1982 I was a
climber for a local tree service and the pay rate at that time in this area was not $15 per hour, but
$3.35 per hour. During that time in my life, I did other things to raise money. I dug and sold medicinal roots, and scrapped aluminum and copper. It was a struggle, and I did not get a participation trophy.
Now, I am not "blowing my own horn" but we now live in an
entitlement driven society. There are very few willing to "work their way up the ladder", and/or resort to entrepreneurial methods to attempt to raise their standard of living. Drug and alcohol addiction is a HUGE issue as well with respect to prospects/employees, and sadly that problem will continue to spiral. With that said, employers have a tough row to hoe. I am the maintenance manager for a river resort, and I see the ineptitude of new hires every season. Guys want higher pay, but can't even read a tape measure. Or they don't know the difference between vise grips and a pipe wrench. Granted, this is an economically depressed area, but they have no work ethic. Most are lazy, as well as weak, both physically and morally. If I sound highly opinionated on this subject, it is because I feel that I consider myself more than qualified to speak on it. Those who have visited my profile will note that there is no biography. That is because during the late 70's I lived on the streets for two years as a homeless man. (Yea, I could have skipped that part in the bio. but the whole honesty thing, you know???) Anyway, I know what it is to have NOTHING. And I can guarantee you that even though I did a lot of jobs that sucked, and for pay that sucked, but I survived. And now I can now look back on that time of my life and be grateful for each of those opportunities to do the suck job for the suck pay, because I just as "easily" could not have survived! Someone once said that Hard times create strong men... Strong men create good times... Good times create weak men... Weak men create hard times... It has been my experience that when employees pony up, then employers pony up. Just sayin'
GL and HH! And Scuba, I hope you get the whole Milelab thing resolved soon!
