FRUSTRATED with Minelab

Have you tried to hire anyone for any position lately? It's like they make more money on unemployment with the Covid benefits than they do actually working. Not to mention no one wants to get dirty these days.

That's just what I've been seeing in my industry. Your mileage may vary. ;)
It's still an excuse. My guess is electronics work is more than just minimum wage. All these reports of restaurants can't find people , etc. It's BS. There ARE people who want to work. Ya gotta pony up. Pay a higher wage , more benefits , whatever it takes. Even if it's only short term while you're "swamped". Unfortunately though at some point the consumer has to pay. But employers , companies have been making out for years. Time to share it a little...

Down in Gainesville Florida right now, noticed a lot of pan handlers down here on most corners some old, many able bodied . With all the collage kids here in this city you would think there would want part time jobs to supplement their expenses. Lots of places are saying they can't get workers because the people were getting to much on unemployment. Back in Missouri where my wife works they laid off a number of people when they started calling them back many would not come back till the supplemented unemployment ran out.

We have a successful tree service here in Pennsylvania, and it’s hard to find help. Not just from the covid, but anytime. I’ve let more grown men go because they can’t stay off the phone, whatever they’re doing is more important than earning a living I guess. Not sure what the country pays but we start at $15 per hour, and when I place help wanted adds I just get crickets.

So true, they're just too cheap to hire help. The current minimum wage here in RI is $11.50, but restaurants can pay their help $3.89 an hour! Who the heck wants to work for that? Yes, they do get tips, but why should the customers pay the restaurant workers wages? The minimum wage should be $11.50, period. If they did that, they'd be dozens of people applying for their waiter and waitress jobs.

Tree work is tough. I'm not surprised you're having trouble finding people at a pay rate of $15 per hour.

Hear hear!

I think most employers have the "why, because I can" attitude when it comes to how they treat employees, whether in terms of respect or pay.

Even if an employer isn't being greedy, they're often very disrespectful, especially to people who apply for their job openings.

Fake news! Dude have you seen what some folks make off tips? It's way more than minimum. Even at Sonic! Plus if they don't make at least the equivalent in minimum wage in tips the employer has to make up the difference. That's the law.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. It's successful for YOU and only YOU. Not your employees. C'mon man , you're that oblivious as to why your phone doesn't ring for $15hr doing tree work ? Maybe in 1982 sure , that was good money. Just by your statement woodbutcher , I can tell you don't respect the people that work for you. You will always have bad apples. I once let a guy go for being on the company phone doing personal business for about 2hrs a day for 3 weeks. So I know what your talking about. Those people are not the norm. But I just gotta say......your company Christmas parties must suck !

There's the law, and there's what people do.

My workman's comp is 36 percent, tag that into $15 an hour and it turns into $21 an hour I'm paying for somone who knows absolutely nothing,so how much is a company supposed to pay inexperienced people starting out? If you ever have a business, you'll definitely see it another way.

$15.00 for throwing branches in chipper or running a stump grinder would be my guess. That's bottom rung unskilled labor. I bet he's not paying the guys running saws or climbing trees that. KOB it's hard to find good help these days. Like people who can stay off the phone or not stop what they are doing to look at it every time it sends an alert. Try finding people who can even pass a drug test. Most actually want way more than they are worth or skilled enough to do. Plus Woodbutcher is taking all the risk that owning the business entails.

Correct.,that $15 dollar an hour is starting wage like I said earlier.Everyone wants top pay with no experience, that's the American dream. I built my company from the ground up, no help and alot of peanut butter sandwiches. I own everything and owe no one.

I know that's an issue in certain jobs. The employer is willing to pay $X/hour and gets plenty of qualified people, but none of them have clean pee.

I would imagine that these workers are doing more than throwing branches into a chipper or cleaning up branches after taking down a tree.

I figured $15/hour isn't going to arborists or the guys who climb the trees with the top handle chainsaws. But guiding the branches on zip lines or handling ropes adds an extra bit of skill or responsibility to the tree service profession that warrants more than $15 an hour...but that's just my opinion.

The paradox with raising the minimum wage is that it forces the prices of everything higher. Businesses won't eat a minimum wage increase, they'll pass it on to the consumer by raising prices... So raising minimum wage does not raise the standard of living for minimum wage earners... it just makes the numbers bigger.

Only to some extent. There's only so much a business can pass on to consumers and still expect them to purchase the product or service.

And don't forget, minimum wage has not been keeping up with inflation the past few decades.

Guys, the easiest thing to do is sit back and throw numbers around of what we all think people should make as a hourly wage from a small company.
Now,put yourself in charge of running the company. Gotta get up and running,do alot of estimates,, and stay running. Advertising fees, good accountant, workman's comp, correct contractors insurance, vehicle registration and insurance, state and local taxes, equipment upkeep,,gas, and that's just a small fraction of expenses before employee labor is added to the mix. Honestly, how much can you expect to charge the customer before your phone stops ringing and your out of work? Small companies are just that, small. Want a 6 figure salary, gotta get a education or a state job.

In 1982 I was a climber for a local tree service and the pay rate at that time in this area was not $15 per hour, but $3.35 per hour. During that time in my life, I did other things to raise money. I dug and sold medicinal roots, and scrapped aluminum and copper. It was a struggle, and I did not get a participation trophy. Now, I am not "blowing my own horn" but we now live in an entitlement driven society. There are very few willing to "work their way up the ladder", and/or resort to entrepreneurial methods to attempt to raise their standard of living. Drug and alcohol addiction is a HUGE issue as well with respect to prospects/employees, and sadly that problem will continue to spiral. With that said, employers have a tough row to hoe. I am the maintenance manager for a river resort, and I see the ineptitude of new hires every season. Guys want higher pay, but can't even read a tape measure. Or they don't know the difference between vise grips and a pipe wrench. Granted, this is an economically depressed area, but they have no work ethic. Most are lazy, as well as weak, both physically and morally. If I sound highly opinionated on this subject, it is because I feel that I consider myself more than qualified to speak on it. Those who have visited my profile will note that there is no biography. That is because during the late 70's I lived on the streets for two years as a homeless man. (Yea, I could have skipped that part in the bio. but the whole honesty thing, you know???) Anyway, I know what it is to have NOTHING. And I can guarantee you that even though I did a lot of jobs that sucked, and for pay that sucked, but I survived. And now I can now look back on that time of my life and be grateful for each of those opportunities to do the suck job for the suck pay, because I just as "easily" could not have survived! Someone once said that Hard times create strong men... Strong men create good times... Good times create weak men... Weak men create hard times... It has been my experience that when employees pony up, then employers pony up. Just sayin'

GL and HH! And Scuba, I hope you get the whole Milelab thing resolved soon!
