Does everyone always take the trash with them from digging up?

When I find it I keep it! I don't want to pay Govn't to clean up after me. I take care of myself and family, what ever it takes on my part.
If someone asks, " How r u doin'?" I show 'em the trash. I'd rather cleanup than add to the problem.
It's just lazy to schlep the trash. I find a silver Half, or smushed beer can...same responsibility. Finders keepers. If the ring was traceable Id look for the looser and share the pleasure of the find!
I'd rather be part of the cure, than part of the problem.
Govn't needs to protect the country. People need to help people!

In fact if i don't take it out of the hole it means i never even touched the item how can you do any of the above if you don't touch the item ever?
Its physically impossible to do any of these dump, throw, discard, place, deposit, or dispose if you never touched the metallic item.

The way I see it, you're right. If it never comes out of the hole and you fill your hole back in, you haven't littered. But by taking it out of the hole and placing it on the ground again, you have littered. It doesn't matter where you got the trash - tossing it on the ground is littering. Of course, leaving it in the hole means you're likely to dig it over and over again, and you'll miss any masked good targets. But if that's how you enjoy your hobby, go for it!!

Bottom line - if you dig it up, throw it away.

1) Make several trips to your vehicle
If I have a half hour (which is what I usually have), I'm not spending 20 minutes of it walking
2) Bring a larger trash receptacle
not a bad idea. need to make it feasable though. Between the MD, the 2 litres I have and the shovel, hand space is limited
3) Stop digging larger targets when your pouch is getting full
My MD doesn't really clue me in on size. I can sort of guess, but it's spotty at best
4) Stop metal detecting.
nah hehe

granted, I could probably do better, but as is, I usually pack out 90% of the trash I dig up. Which is still 90% cleaner than it would be without me.

If you don't have time to deal with the trash, don't go metal detecting.
If you don't have enough hands for the gear and trash bags, make two trips. If you don't have time for this, don't go metal detecting. And tossing 10% of your trash on the ground is still more trash on the ground than there would have been had you not dug it up at all. Anyways, that's just my opinion.

I just wanted to prove my point that not every situation would it be considered littering. And that you say i litter on purpose pissed me off. I still have good ethics though. I even went back after posting this thread before it got dark ( before you called me a litter bug) and went back to my spots with a 5 gallon bucket. I still have enough morals not to be that bad but calling me littering on purpose was pissing me off.

yeah, but what if you're a long ways from your car (or wherever) and don't have the hands.

I'll pack out what I can, but if I'm not done hunting and don't have the space, back it goes.

I'm referring specifically to leaving trash dug up and next to the hole. If it's too big to carry, leave it in the ground. Definately don't pull it out and leave it on the surface. This is a sure bet way to get MDing banned in your town.

Everyone needs to chill out, I can tell you that if I picked up every single piece of trash I found it would fill a dump truck. I find trash bags, cans, lots of shrapnel, hand grenades, bullets, and tons of other stuff. I leave it in the hole all of it. Everyone can say what they want but at least I am telling the truth. Plus even if I did carry all of this stuff home the Germans are so anal about recycling it would take me hours to sort it all out and I would have to pay for it to be taken away.

Sorry to hear your parks are so trashed needler. That's a bummer, especially in Florida! But really nothing new I guess. People have been trashing parks for generations.

The 1920's was the worst I think, and all the rivers were really polluted too. Then for several generations a cleanup started. Now we're at a point where most people don't care anymore.

BTW Here's a cartoony that kind of fits in this thread.

Yep, you got it! Most of our finds are trash! At least we care enough to do what we can to clean up. What kind of world would we live in if nobody cared?

I take anything that'll fit in my pouch. If I find a giant piece of iron its stays in the hole. Anything that gets out of the hole ends up in my treasure pouch or eventually in a garbage bag. I have several Md'ing buddies that leaves their trash around their plugs. Pisses me off because I'll go over it with my detector....So annoying.

Well I hunt on the National Forests at campfire ring areas. I even pickup surface trash for the most part. I have been doing that for years even before I started detecting. I had half a pickup bed full of cans and bottles one time. For me it is a case of I remember how the forest used to look, and now how many people dont care about leaving it as they found it. So for me it is take the trash.

Iv been just digging it up and leaving it to the side for for state sanitation crews to deal with.

So i just fill my plugs as best as possible and move the trash to the side.

People are the biggest litter bugs here.

I must be reading it wrong...

So you leave the trash you dig off to the side of the plug for someone else to pick up?

And...people are the the biggest litterbugs there?

Hmmmm....intersting analogy...still trying to read those statements correctly.

So I have to ask, do you take the smaller stuff and leave cans or larger stuff behind or any trash after a certain point when you are getting heavy.

I can understand the larger stuff and heavy stuff but I would at least hope that you move it off the field so it would not get chopped up by the mowers. Is that what youre saying?

Yes I already said that.
I pile most of it in a pile off to a side to its out of peoples way. While i still get what i can.

How about flaming this guy.

Well, at least youre taking what you can, suppose its better than what Ive seen some do and thats either throw it on the ground (without thinking about safety) or re-bury it.

:D:D:D

I do..I carry one walmart bag for trash and another one for putting dirt on that i've dug so I can replace it under the plug and make things look tidy.

Use common sense. You want to remove the trash you can but you are there to detect. You should have room in a nail pouch or zipper pouch for all dug trash. If cups and cans are in reach I squeeze them in too. I always grab anything hazardous like glass and needles. Needles I Carry right to a garbage can. I try to keep a 13gal kitchen garbage bag or grocery bag in case, but sometimes I will play kick the cup until I get a pile in the area I sm detecting.

You do what you can you are there to detect, but you really should pick up any thing you come near, as thanks for the priviledge.

Never leave what you have dug unless it is too big to remove from the hole you made. You don't have to finish digging a can that is 8 inches deep and not budging. Pop tops loose cans go.

Don't leave a pile of your dug trash laying any where put it in a trash can or take it with you. That is first priority. Second is grabbing trash others leave behind, do it, but you don't have to put your detector back in the car and clean all day! Just pick up what you come across and put it in the trash.

If there is no trashcan and you can't carry it out use your judgement. Kick the can until the cups are all in a pile carry them home if you have room. You improved things. You should leave it better than you found it.

Never leave nails and sharps.

I always take out the trash and then throw it away in the nearest dumpster that way if I hunt the area again I don't dig up the same tab or screw

Well, I am sorry if it upset you that much. I hope you understand, though, that from what you described it did sound like littering. Perhaps it is different than how it reads on the forum, or perhaps it was that behavior and you have given it up. Anyways, no hard feelings, k? I'll try not to be so combative on the internets, and you try to keep the parks clean of dug junk. Fair deal?

Dang! That’s what I call junk in the trunk! I sort what I have; throw recyclables in the city recycle bin and the rest in the city trash bin. I just figured it out! I pay the city for a recycle bin and they cash in on top of what I pay them. Lol! Oh well, it’s good for the environment.

really, because by my math it's 90% less ....

I generally take the trash with me.
If it is a complete crushed can or larger I will leave
it if I think digging it out will cause more
damage to the turf than the plug that I have
already dug.
