Does everyone always take the trash with them from digging up?

If I dig down and find big iron underground and I don't feel like digging it, I will close the hole.
Same with cans...I will uncover enough to make sure its a can and if it is a hassle to dig, I close the hole.
If any of this stuff is shallow and comes up easily I take it so I won't scan it on another hunt.
If I dig anything trashy and it comes out of the ground to the surface, I then consider it my responsibility from that second forward and put it in the trash bag...no matter how much hassle it is to lug around.
I will never rebury anything I bring to the surface.
Leaving any trash on the side of the hole or anywhere on the site for others to clean up has never ever entered my mind.
I hunt some very trashy areas and I will clean up all the trash I am able, even surface finds, even when I am very tired at the end of a long hunt.

I believe being able to hunt anywhere and especially public places is a privilege, not a right, and I act accordingly to my beliefs.

I'm referring specifically to leaving trash dug up and next to the hole. If it's too big to carry, leave it in the ground. Definately don't pull it out and leave it on the surface. This is a sure bet way to get MDing banned in your town.

I only leave it surface side if I didn't have to really dig for it.

i.e. a crushed can that won't fit in my container, but was only a half inch under. I won't dig a bigger hole to bury it deeper as that seems silly. However, if it won't fit in my pockets or containers then oh well. I have to content myself with all the pull tabs, sinkers, bottle caps, fish hooks and etc. that I do take out =)

really, because by my math it's 90% less ....

Well, yes, technically you're right. I'm just thinking, imagine yourself as the parks and rec director walking through trying to decide whether or not to ban MD'ing. If you didn't MD there and all the trash was 4 in below the surface (or if you did, and took it all with you), the park looks nice and neat and doesn't invite the MD ban. If, on the other hand, you took 90% with you and tossed the other 10% on the ground, the parks director now sees a messy park and hears rumors of MD'ers tossing their garbage on the ground. Suddenly you become the scapegoat for all the trash in the park, and *poof!* no more MD'ing in that town.

But anyways, that's just my opinion. Plus I don't like trash all around me, so I take it for that reason, too.

I don't toss it on the ground unless it's a very specific example like the one I posted a few seconds ago. Generally, if I can't fit it I leave it buried.

As frustrating as the trash is, always pick it up. I am
Usually within tosing distance of a garbage can anyways. Plus I usually let folks know what garbage I have removed from their beaches or tot lots. The biggest garbage item I have removed was a kids bike buried about a foot down in the sand. Took about a half an hour to get the darn thing out with my kids helping. That bike was removed and put in a garbage can as it was too rusty to fix up. In order for MDers to keep their hobby secure and available it is essential that we remove the garbage, plus it makes it easier to hunt the next times around...

The way I see it, you're right. If it never comes out of the hole and you fill your hole back in, you haven't littered. But by taking it out of the hole and placing it on the ground again, you have littered. It doesn't matter where you got the trash - tossing it on the ground is littering. Of course, leaving it in the hole means you're likely to dig it over and over again, and you'll miss any masked good targets. But if that's how you enjoy your hobby, go for it!!

Bottom line - if you dig it up, throw it away.

If you don't have time to deal with the trash, don't go metal detecting.
If you don't have enough hands for the gear and trash bags, make two trips. If you don't have time for this, don't go metal detecting. And tossing 10% of your trash on the ground is still more trash on the ground than there would have been had you not dug it up at all. Anyways, that's just my opinion.

Really because it is just plain stupid to EVER dig a metal piece of trash and bury it back in a hole. I would at least put it in my back pocket, or something. If it were larger I would carry it around with me until I found a can, or put it in my trunk. I guess if it were big and I walked miles to get there and the city was too stupid to have dumpsters or cans within 500 yard I might put it back, but I would be very reluctant! Now if it were half of a washing machine or something I would cover it back up.

Well, it's more of a country park and there aren't trash cans (well public ones) for about 10 or so miles. I walk about a half mile to the locale as stated.

I think it's kind of funny and slightly irritating that some of us are being vilified for only packing out most of our garbage. It's like yelling the adopt a road people for only picking up 90% of the garbage.

Better 90% than 0%

Its the 10% that is left that will have our privileges cut off. :(

I agree with most statements here. If you surface it, take it with you.

Look at it this way. You are geting paid to pick up the garbage with the coins, silver and gold you find.

If I dig it, I take it. I recycle most stuff and get about $80 for each 6 months worth. I even throw the pulltabs in the aluminum bucket. Why not? it only takes me a few seconds to throw them in the buck vs the trashcan. Not much money in the aluminum but at least it gets recycled and the scrap yard is a few blocks from the house so not much of a prob for me.

Everything is about appearances. If you are in the habit of taking all the trash you can with you, then when the time comes that someone is watching you, more than likely you will appear like the guardian saint of Auntie Litter! Sounds like you are at least leaving the ground appearing good, that is important, but you never want to be seen putting garbage back in the ground. If you get in the habit of putting stuff back then you will look like some kind of shallow money stealer.

Pack out as much garbage as you can, every time, regardless of how long a walk it is. You don't have to carry 20 lbs, take 10.

Yes, I always take my trash that I dig, or scoop, out. I do three beaches and three parks on a regular basis and I don't want to waist my time digging or even hearing that same trash I left there before, also I get personal satisfaction in leaving an area cleaner than when I got there. For a lousy $.99you can go to any store or market and buy one of those reusable shopping bags. Most people wear belts, just tuck one handle of the bag under the left side of your belt and pull it up, the other handle of the handle over your belt and tie it in a knot over your belt. It will be open on each side of where you tied it and there will be plenty of room for not only your small trash, but also cans and bottles, metal tent rods, and other large trash, and your hands are free because the bag is tied to your belt. Off the subject for a moment, go on google and type in fanny pack, you will get a multitude of listings starting from a few dollars to much more. I have a cheap one with just three compartments, the medium one for eight aa batteries, the small one for three 9v batteries (two for another detector, and one for my propointer), and the main compartment of the 18k Rolex watches and platinum Tiffiny rings I hope to find, (you notice I just said hoped), with the fanny pack I never worry about having spare batteries.
