A Couple Thoughts on The Legend

Picked up a Legend the last week of Sept. So far I'm really impressed. Its a pleasure to swing and has no problem hitting deeper targets. I read a comment one poster said that he thought the Legend heavy and the menu was difficult to navigate. He is using a D2 and compared to that I see his point but in the category with the Equinox its very close and the first hunt I had it on with the 12x9 coil I swung it for almost 8 hours with no wrist or shoulder fatigue. And as far as the menu goes, when I first saw the videos I thought it looked pretty in depth but in actuality its quite easy to navigate and the sub menus are right where they should be. On that first hunt I was at an old church yard that had been well hunted by me, others and even the pastor was an avid Md'r. So starting with the deck stacked against it I had it in Field M1 6 tone AM Rec. 4 IF 4. The reason for Field was, in my test garden it was hitting 7 in. targets cleaner. Although it ran a little jumpy with default sensitivity I was able to find 22 pennies, a few recent drops but a good deal of older memorials, a couple of nickels and some bits and bobs. I lost my bone conductors on the last trip there. For those of you who prefer the Minelab tones, the tones are quite similar and are adjustable.
The things that cinched the deal for me with the Legend was the third party headphone option, the coil selection and last but not least the mineralization meter. So after losing my bone conductors I tried pairing my Avantrees headphones without success. The ML80s and my earbuds would pair but no go with the Avantrees. I really prefer headphones and as soon as the weather cools a bit I switch to them. Begrudgingly I broke down and bought the Nokta ones. I will say they are comfortable and the audio is quite good.
I got a new yard permission last week and wanted to give the LG24 a try. Same settings as above but in 4 Tone. I used it on the second trip. First trip I used the 800/stock coil. I'll post separate about that. Don't want to make it a Legend vs. this or that thread. So I ran it for little over 6 hours, man I really like that 6x9 coil. It was nailing 6-7 in. targets easily. It ran smooth all day even with the sensitivity cranked up to 28 .I was pretty close to power lines as well. I like the Ferrocheck feature also. I just have to remember to look at it more. lol When you get one of those sweet sounding high tones with numbers topping the scale and you suspect iron wrap around but it sounds too good to walk away from, a glance at ferrocheck will show all iron. Of the 10 plus hours I used it in this yard I was only fooled a few times with falsing off the tip of a rusty nail. And these were all down 8in. or more. The manual says even if only one or two bars on the ferrous side indicate some ferrous content in the target but on that I'm still in the "show me " stage. So far, after a dozen or so times it been right every time. And then I start thinking what if thats a good target with iron right next to it ? The one disappointment I did have was the Legend just like the 800 & 900 severely up averages in my dirt. Not just on deep targets either. The religious medal was a 52. I thought I had silver but it turns out it was just aluminum. I had memorials and wheats hitting 55. One when I scanned the dirt on my towel. I'm used to it by now but was hoping the Legend with the LG24 was going to be my yard picker. One thing I would like to see is the navigation keys highlighted. They are blacked out and in anything but bright daylight you can't see the icons. Now some might say use it enough and you'll know the keys and that might be so but highlighted keys for quick reference in the field would be a nice feature.
So to highlight my finds from that yard, the coolest find was a James E. Pepper Whiskey token, a fob that is a clock??? A good luck and 3 Chuckie Cheese tokens. A 1961 swim tag 5 wheaties, about a buck thirty in clad including 2 65 GWs a 65 dime also. No silver. I still remember thinking how much I enjoyed the machine on that day and I look forward to using it more.
I guess I should have posted this in All About Detectors. Mods please move if you see fit. Thanks Mark

Mark,

Wholeheartedly agree with you about the keys not being backlit. I've found that the Legend will find every speck of metal if you want it too. And the Ferrocheck really is a fantastic time (and back) saver. WHP hold their charge for 20+ hours. I usually go with Park 1, 6 tones, sensitivity 22-25. Great detector in my opinion.

Nice finds, keep swinging.

Well even if not backlit just highlighted in white would be nice. Mark

Mark,
I’ve had the legend for a couple months now and really like it, but it won’t replace my XP ORX.
I use it on old spots to try something new and it is picking up a few things I’ve missed before. I love it on a beach and used it yesterday in a hard hit trashy area with the little tiny coil and teased out a ‘41 wheatie.
I think I need to use it a lot to figure out the options and tones, that multi-freq makes a lot of chatter it seems But overall I really like it.
I just ordered their new pinpointer with two tone, iron and non-ferrous. It will connect to same Bluetooth headphones or earbuds I’m using, as for those make sure anything you buy specifies low latency LL.
Mine were low latency for gaming and seems as good as the headphones for $20 or so.

The ORX is so light and small, it will be my go to most of the time.
I packed it in a daypack with my belt, pinpointer, hand digger and the new Nokta two part shovel which I disassembled and hiked in over a mile to a place near where I was at in SC running an 50k.
Found a horseshoe and a funny little fishing lure from the 50’s called The Little Cleo Wigl Lure
with a scantly clad dancer on it. The creator was enthralled with exotic dancers and said his lure swayed like they did to entice fish……
Fun little find but the ease of packing in the ORX got me back in the woods to find it
Enjoy the Legend, I am

Cover for the Legend

There are other people that painted the inlay. I tried it but it wears off.

Ferrocheck is an underrated, but valuable tool when hunting in iron. When I'm hunting in iron, I set my Iron Filter (iron bias) just to the point that iron falsing begins. With detectors that don't have an iron indicator, it's easy to get fooled that way, because the tone is great, and the ID shows nonferrous. Yet, with an iron indicator like Ferrocheck, it shows iron. After testing it countless times, I learned to trust it.

I can see larger aluminum ID'ing that high if it was close to the coil. However, the memorials and wheats should not be hitting at 55. Something is not right about that Mark. What do they ID at in an air test?

Dig,
Is Ferrocheck giving you a little "information" that is not present in either the TID or audio?

In my testing I'm finding this to be the case in the hodograph of my Rutus Atrex. Not always 100%, but it's enough for me to trust "my interpretation" of the target trace with the TID and the audio.

Yes Dave.

I suspect it does go because it's using the "raw" data before any significant processing occurs. It doesn't have to go through audio and ID processing. Rather, all it has to do, is simultaneously show how much ferrous and nonferrous is in the raw signal, and does so regardless of any setting or discrimination level.

I wasn't aware that the Atrex had a feature that does something similar. I'll check it out. Thanks :)

I had the ORX and the Legend in the back of the car. More than once I would fire up the Legend and walk 100 yards to the towel line at the beach and quickly return for the ORX.

It is just so much lighter and easier to use.

I think it the soil here in W. Pa. All 3 machines air test fine, with factory and small coils. The 800 & 900 id accurately to about 4 maybe 5 inches. I cannot give an educated opinion on
the Legend as of yet. I need to dig a couple hundred targets on different sights before I can. But from what I've seen so far it does up average and just not on the deeper targets. Not giving up. Mark
