1797 Large Cent

That sure is a beautiful piece of history. Most of us will probably never dig up a coin that old. Congratulations on a great find.

I went to the library to check out a book called penny whimsy that helps you identify what variety of Large cent you have. I think this one is the Sheldon 131 Stemless variety, but I could be wrong. If anyone knows anything something about what variety mine is I appreciate it. Coin facts has most of the variety's pictured and I know mine is one of the stemless ones but the way the date on mine is spaced seems a little different to me.
Here's a link to coinfacts about the 1797 Large Cents.

Thanks everyone for your responses to this thread and I really enjoy reading about everyones finds on this forum. Everyone here is great!

That certainly is an interesting coin. The front side seems to be an "impression" like it was stamped instead of "raised" like the back side.

Do you know what I mean or are my eyes playing tricks on me? :?:

In other words, the lady is "set" in the planchett, instead of raised above the planchett, along with the word "Liberty."

Maybe it's an error coin? It's the reverse of what it's suppose to be.

I think it just looks that way because I used photoshop to scan the coin in and then used auto contrast to see if it would make the coin clearer because my scans didn't work very good. I think it gave it that illusion because the coin when your looking at it in person has the bust and letters all raised like regular coins do. I'm going to try to scan it again later without using the contrast and see if I can do a better job on it without changing anything because the coin is in good enough shape that it should look good enough without doctoring it up, maybe I'll try my digital camera instead of the scanner.

Oh, okay, thanks for clearing that up, cause I was going to say PA was notorious for making counterfeit coins.

Couple finds from that spot

Not sure if your gonna see this or not but I have hunted that spot for a few yrs after I contacted you along time ago when i started detecting, i live within walking distance of the henry house,in the last 6 years I got 4 coppers,1739 kg, 1837 large cent, unidentifiable smaller copper and an 1806/7 lc from that spot and a silver ring, the 06/07 and silver ring came from across the road right where you described, got a bunch of other awesome finds around the area as well but it was rough going over many years of digging there hh

Big Congrats! Thinking outside the box and trying something new sure paid off for you.

Happy Winter Solstice! The day light hours are going to start getting longer now. More time to detect.
