Great find! I zoomed in on coin and I got 1787 out of it. The two numbers looks identical at the top. Just my input to help you out a little.

Claims he came here with a ship of silver and had to ditch a lot due to weight issues. Indians in British Columbia claim to be descended from some of the men he left behind that eventually assimilated into local tribes. Very interesting. I would highly recommend

Jed, I'm afraid I'll have to be a kill-joy on this topic: Treasure-lore stories like this are a "dime-a-dozen". And they all sound so *iron-clad-true*, right ? After all, who wants to be "left out", right ? Yet all they are is infinite "he-said-she-said" lore. Like the Oak Island nonsense. Where, if you ask for "proof of the legend", you are pointed back to (doh) : The legend itself. Can you spell : "circular logic" ?

And no matter if it's true that early explorers ventured that far north along the PW coast (which isn't in dispute). Then: That still doesn't bode for 1) treasure, and 2) fumble finger's losses in the amounts we'd need to justify our hobby (eg.: far different that permanent toe-hold habitations, like the CA mission-system was).

JMHO

Congratulations on that Spanish it never gets old ...

Tom lives near Monterey and that place has ancient history!!!

Pretty dang slick coin there Tom, congrats! I’ve got to stumble on some old back pocket sights around here at some point!

Awesome find, heck I'd call it a day after finding one of those. Congrats

Beautiful discovery, and one of my dream finds.
...

truth, metal-addict, ground-sweeper, quicksilver, wood-buther, and gumshoe: Thanx for looking !

Got this 178x (can't read the last digit) half reale this morning. This is the 3rd reale I've pulled from this site over time.

2 different pix of the front , with different lighting. And a pix of the back. The reale came out dull-grey, so it needed the "spit & tinfoil" trick, Just to get anything to show, and to pull a date from it.

The last pix is the "before" pix, with a few other targets from the vicinity : A pistol ball, a crude underwear button, and a nuisance 1952 wheatie .

I know that 1780s coins are a "dime a dozen" on the east coast. But here in CA, they're hard to come by !

Why are you making fun of peoples' large cents when youre finding 1780s reales ?

I know of one guy who has found more than a couple reales in the last year. He doesn't post those finds and it is south of SB. I wonder who that could be ?

A buddy of mine, from So. CA, has bagged 4 reales in the last 6 months or so from down there. But I don't think we're talking about the same person ?

What type locations is your friend hunting ?

It's not in a "downtown" area. More out in the "boonies". Its got dirt , grass , a little iron and oddly...what appears to be pottery or broken clay tiles.
