Thee most silver snake-bit detectorist in the world strikes again. I found this 1775 King George III last week in a local park, down about 9". Found 5 wheaties stuck together last night - 1913, 1919, 1920, 1925 & 1928. The ones in the center cleaned up like they were new, none seemed to have been circulated much. For some reason I'm the king of copper. I find obscure stuff like the King George to early 1800's large cents to tons of Indian and wheaties.... but no silver! As a matter of fact, I've only found one piece of silver that I remember.... 1876 seated liberty quarter. I have never found a damn Merc., been pounding every local park trying to break out of this funk but nothing (but poison ivy in January) has been found. I'll be back at it again tonight, got a feeling I'm getting lucky.

George is in rough condition. I'd imagine, from the looks of it, that it's been in the gound for 200+ years.

Rough but not too bad if you can read the date.

I have had the same luck with silver verse coppers. Now have 4 half pennies, KG I, KG II young face, 2- KGII old face, 6 large cents plus a Fugio as well as IHs & wheats.
Only silver found are two Barber dimes, Barber quarter and a 1924 Peace dollar.
No Rosies or mercs...or older silver.

question for both Metaldiggr and waltr: What machines are you two using? Because I feel like I've got a similar problem. Silvers just don't come out nearly as much as I would expect considering the other finds I get. Sometimes I really wonder if my AT Max is actually locking on to silver coins the way it should. But it's probably just coincidence.

I use two DIY detector. One is a PI and it does hit silver readily and deep. The other is a TGSL (Tesoro Golden Sabre) 14kHz VLF. This doesn't hit silver as well due to higher frequency as a VLF running a lower frequency. But does hit silver if not too deep.

Both hit clad dimes easily and some have been 5-6 inches. Clad and silver dimes are nearly the same as to delectably.

The sites I get the OLD coppers I think simply do not have silver coin drops. These sites were active from 1700's up to the great depression then abandoned. High denomination coins were too valuable to allow being lost so they are simply not at these sites.

The other sites I detect are newer park & sport fields that had been farm fields pre-1970's. I have pulled old copper coins but it is rare. Mostly it is clad and jewelry.

I have not been to post WWII houses/yards or crib strips. Form reading this forum this seems to be where most people find the silver dimes, quarters, etc.

So it is just location.

The AT Max is a good detector and many have used and really like it so it does hit silver. You just need to find a location that has silver in the ground then get the coil over the silver.

Well.... the machine def isn't it. lol. I run a CTX 3030, just got it in November and it's a beast. Def not the machine! I regularly find copper 9-12" and that's with the stock coil. I migrated from an AT Pro, initially bought an Anfibio but it seemed very noisy so I returned it and got the CTX. I just think it's amazing. Absolutely the best detector I've ever used. I can look at the screen now and know exactly what's under my coil.

Yeah, that's what I figured. You're probably right, I just haven't hit the right spot yet. But I'll get there! One of these days I'll have a great silver day!

Congrats on the copper harvest. Would love to see pics of the wheats. (dates showing please ) Wheats don't seem to get the respect they deserve and they are a decidedly a most handsome coin. Keep in mind a good silver to wheat ratio here in the east is around 4 or 5 to 1. And location is key. Most of the old properties I have hunted give up WW2 or post WW2 era silver. Not too often I get period correct coins. I would be happy to find some of those old coppers your into. Good luck on your silver quest. Mark

Ha, I blew that 4 or 5 to 1 ratio out of the water when I hunted a late 1800s home and found 17 wheats and 0 silvers. I was so angry!!!
