How important are your wireless headphones? Are they a have to have or something that you can easily do without?
I am trying to decide if I really need them as a novice or not.
 
I have the hard wired phones but wouldn't be without them. All the things Mark said are true plus blanking out the speaker on your detector won't draw more attention when you get a good signal. That speaker is an onlooker magnet. :waytogo:
 
As a newb myself I figured I did not need wireless. I didn't want the minor inconvenience of keeping them charged. Same reason I went with a detector that is battery powered.
So there I am, picking up a signal I want to dig. And I laid the detector down and the headphones were promptly ripped from my head. I just *assumed* that there was enough coiled wire to compensate the length needed to set the detector down and use a 36" shovel to dig. Not the case.
So I stopped wearing them right then. Put them around my neck and secured the wire. I don't operate around people anyway.

Then I tried them again on a windier/noisier day and found that if I knelt down at the same time I was putting the detector on the ground everything was hunk dory. But this time I had forgotten my shovel and was using the hand digger to make my hole. Kneeling was actually pretty comfortable, in spite of a bad knee.
I have since ordered an 18" shovel so I can try digging while kneeling.

If I had it all to do again I would have gotten wireless headphones. But I don't see me needing them to mask my detector. I think the convenience of no wire outweighs the inconvenience of charging them. And I can easily do without them anyway.
 
Being new at this, adjusting to likes/dislikes is ever evolving. I have spent my short time at this 99% at the beach... cuz that's near where I live. I have a set of wireless, low latency, waterproof headphones. It's totally a love/hate relationship.

The likes:
warm in the cooler weather
weak signal work
privacy

The dislikes:
hot in the summer
poor fit with my hat
feel cut off from my surroundings

The last two points in dislikes: they are probably gonna be the deal breakers. I don't like the fit with my hat... and that's a must for sun exposure summer and winter here. I've burnt the top of my head & ears, even using sunscreen. We won't be revisiting that any time soon (read: ever again). The feeling of isolation and oblivious to my surroundings is a tad unnerving. Thirty years of FD/EMS training has my head on a swivel. Cutting off my hearing is really a no-go. I am even considering just (1) one ear bud in low latency, waterproof.

I totally get the rest of the world doesn't wanna hear a screeching metal detector, so compromise is important.
 
To me, the headphones themselves are more important than whether or not they're wired.

My favorites are a pair of Black Widows that have a long HEAVY coiled wire that moves easily and is never in the way. The coiled wire weight makes a difference.

I also own and use wireless Minelab and Nokta phones. I like both of them very much too, just not quite as much as the Widows.
The Widows sound better.
 
Also seems to vary a lot in your environment.. beach is noisy headphones almost a must. Wireless is good if you’re not getting MD in the water. I was using the minelab s 85 that comes with the 900 then caught myself in water more often so i needed to get a pair of wired waterproof. After strapping cord securely to shaft then again under the forearm support. It never seems to bother or get in way. Had a pair of Tony Eisenhower's headset made. Comfy,diff option for muffs, cord option left or right side… now they just stay on the MD and the wireless is a back up.
 
I have and do use both, but prefer the wireless (Deus II); I use the wired in the water. Tried the Bone Phones that Deus sells and really did not care for them. I prefer all the quiet that I can get in and out of the water... 25 years Army Tactical Signal Corp, Morse Code Instructor, etc... Don't care to have every kid on the beach running every time they hear a beep, can ignore constant questions as I detect... Guess I have just gotten old..
 
I have a pair like these for the 800 has to be stereo

I was going to suggest a 50-SPF shirt from the fishing section of WalMart. The hood is pretty generous, even for my giant noggin, such that it hangs over my forehead. You can wear the headphones under OR OVER the hood.

However, it works against you by cutting over some peripheral vision, which I don't enjoy either.
 
I have used wireless for several years and I really like them. Won't go back to wired. I currently use bone conduction headphones, like them so you can hear what's around you and still get a good sound.
 
I use both regular wireless (Nokta) and low latency earbuds. I really like the headphones better but I like the earbuds because they don't interfere with my floppy hat I wear when I want to keep the sun off my ears and neck. I also use headphones to hear faint deep signals.
