What does everyone do for a living?

Soil Tech

I play with dirt all day and get paid for it. Basics are soil testing, concrete testing, and alot of different types of inspections.

notice the broken pipe that had to be removed.

What a great job!! You get to know about projects that may have coin potential!:D:yes: When in the Seabees I was an equipment operator and then went to work for the gas and electric utility out here. I love dirt too!!

Wooden boat builder

I've been a boat builder since I was 13 or so. Started in a Stock Island yard after school for a nice man who made sportfisherman powerboats. Later I worked for a maker of glass and wood sailboats. 22 years ago I went off by myself to build my idea of the ideal cruising ketch of 38 feet. Have built 11 of this one design, all in wood.

What's unique about my operation is I've never advertised and do not even have a website. I make one boat by myself over a two-year period and then sell it in May of the year its finished. I build every boat to please me. This way I don't have to waste time listening and doing for a buyer. When I make a boat it's a labor of love but with the knowledge it will be sold on completion. I make them all slightly different in appearance by using different color woods and by doing extensive hand carving and brass work. All my bronze fittings I hand cast (lost wax) and use shapes from nature like bird's feet and fish and shells and such.

You cannot know how lovely it is to go to work every day and not be bothered by phones and visitors and sales persons. All I do is sip coffee and run my hands along nice pieces of wood with my dogs under the bench watching the shorebirds down the ramp to the water. I make a fair living but fair is not bad in this tropical paradise. I will never leave Key West or the Lower Keys for anything less than a Cat 5.

I drive a truck and deliver to convenient stores. It's the best paying job I've ever had and I hate just about everything to do with it. There is no sense of satisfaction or accomplishment. No sense of helping people. The hours (mostly over night and ranging from 12-18 hours depending on the route). The monotany(sp?). The road rage because nobody seems to know how to drive. Probably the only things I like is the paycheck and the benifits.

We have divisions all over the country so chances are you've seen the truck and maybe even seen our guys making a delivery.

I love reading this thread from time to time, easily one of the best on the site. I think I'm the only person in my profession who metal detects :(

I recently became a Cutco Rep. I really enjoy my job because i get to meet all types of people and i have complete freedom of when i want to work. (works out well with my detecting addiction). Anyways, if you arent familiar with Cutco, it is the finest kitchen cutlery you can own. Check it out at www.cutco.com. and if you see anything you like, lemme know.:yes:

I save boobies :) Really, I'm an electronics engineer for GE Healthcare. I am part of group from GE who built the elecrtronics on the GE Digital Mammography detectors that are in women health centers and hospitals. I highly recommend your wives, girlfriends, family members get a digital Mammography test instead of the old film test.

I am a carpenter, specializing in finish carpentry. This is a house we finished recently. 13,000+ sq ft, what fun.

Retired Law Enforcememt California. I've relocated to near Denver where I grew up. Drove past my old house where I grew up post WWII and see that it's been scraped to build a new "McMansion". I want to paint that lot before they actuallty start building it. I know where some GREAT stuff is burried by the walnut tree.

My new Fisher F4 should be arriving tomorrow. In the meantime I'll learn what I can from y'all.

I just got my metal detector out of the attic a few weeks ago to take my 5 year old son out on our lawn. Some of our first finds were matchbox cars (3 of them) and a plane of the same size. He likes them a whole lot better than the coins we've found, but he loves going out and hunting with me! We've got a bag of coins that we've found together! We need to expand beyond our yard now...
