Wahooo, got my new to me Safari today!!

...I've read waaaaaay more positive things about the FBS machines at finding coins(my priority target) than alot of other machines...Do some video googling about the Safari, I think you'll be more than impressed...

I have, but most of what I've found doesn't compare it to more modern machines, like the Equinox, when it comes to finding silver coins.

My gut says either Equinox, when properly set up, will do better than the Safari will when it comes to finding silver coins. However, what is this proper set up? I know the Equinox has a steep learning curve and I suspect, for the casual user (such as me) who primarily uses preset modes/settings, the Safari might outperform the Equinox.

Nox also has depth reading issues abound, do video searches like this machine vs that machine, and just because a machine isn't modern, it still does the job today some struggle with. Minelabs old and new weren't expensive only for their name, you get a reputation based on performance, yeah the Nox is a Minelab, but I think they threw too much new tech together and are letting the users figure out where they need to improve, I'm not trying to talk you out of a Nox, many truly love them, more don't.

I don't usually hunt in my own yard even though I live in a 1910 house, waaay too much trash, nails everywhere and brass rivets by the thousands...where the holy in all that's good did the rivets come from I'll never know but they ring up like silver coins with every detector I've had. So...I thought I'd give the Safari it's first hard challenge, sure enough, trash signals and fake silver signals, dug a few nails and pop pull tops, had one signal ring in strong over and over, a lot of over lapping garbage signals with it, but pinpointed the signal, dug, low and behold, a 1973 Rosie, modern dime, but hey, didn't find it before. Oh, and with the Safari, prepare to dig deep, I found a lot of new signals I haven't dug yet deeeeeep, I dug one, found an old pipe, not sure what it was for, left it alone.

Several tips off hand already, as stated everywhere, learn the tones, dig tones not numbers, my dime was way off on the number scale, sweep slow, definitely something I have to work on, takes a while to recover from signal to signal, this will be the hardest for me to learn to do. Pinpoint is very accurate, rocking motion worked as good as the pinpointing, I tried both, everything lied directly under the center of the coil. After finding a tone, do the 1/4 turn and sweep again, helped me determine trash easier. I can already see that my trashy yard is going to give me good practice in separation learning, the 11" pro coil works as expected, deep, a little iffy with the trash separation, but was doable.

Biggest factor using the Safari is (always go by tone) no matter what the ID says if the tone is good ,,,,dig. Example i found a target and first thing i hear is that sweet minelab silver tone but when i looked down at ID it was near the pull tab range. I almost did not dig but finally decided i could not ignore that tone. It turned out to be a silver quarter next to iron. IE using conductive tones not ferrous when detecting.

Yeah, I'll need some practice with that other than my yard, everything in my yard rings like silver with a few exceptions, I wish I knew what went on at my property a 100 years ago, all the little silly brass rivets slightly larger than a BB/Pellet, ring like a Wells Fargo truck exploded in my yard lol. Had a few nickel tones that turned out to be pull tabs. I'll eventually make a test bed but need a cleaner yard to make it in, so I can learn the tones properly.

Congrats on the Safari, I almost bought one but the Equinox came out and I knew this was my next high end machine!
I guess my first was the F70 but I just didn't get along with it really.

I have a Quattro and after struggling with a very ferrous site and hearing lots of false high tones in All Metal Mode I found this to be helpful.

http://www.garysdetecting.co.uk/quattro.htm

It should be the same for the Safari.

Thanks for the link, a Quattro huh, those are like a jack-a-lopes, rare and unseen, I don't think I've actually seen one or seen one for sale, I assume you like it?

They are pretty much the same as a Safari as I understand besides the processor and default trash setting is low on the Quattro while high on Safari. I found it on craigslist for 120 and couldn’t pass it up.

I like it, but it is a little harder to learn than my f22. Worked great on the wet salty sand. The main trouble I have is with severely corroded iron giving me high tones but that will happen on any machine I think.

I find hearing the low tones helps me figure out what is a good signal and what is not. I am thinking at some point I might get a bigger coil, but Not until I stop running into so much trash.

I'll be glad when CP's battery holder arrives from the moon! It's finally cleared customs, waiting on some good pictures of finds!

:boxing:

oh, you got game do ya...and your finds are where??? oh yeah "I'm moving", "my wife won't let me", "my detector's too heavy":laughing::laughing::laughing:

Hey brother, I can't wait either, that's what I get for ordering from Kiev, that happens to be where my dust cover is coming from as well, I don't mind waiting, gives time to harass you:p

soon enough:digginahole:

What I don't like is now I have 3 AA battery holders and need 24 new batteries:dash3:

Hey, I know you would be getting ready for this too and it's just one acre of 12! From the looks of one tree, I'll be getting the AR-10 out for some target practice too.....If you need to get out of the dog house, come see me next month!

I've got hundreds of acres and old home sites to hit here in WV, my dad has 2-300 acres scattered. plus plenty of free places...but, I might take you up on your offer later in the year....are the damn bugs in Arkansas still as loud as a busted chainsaw on full throttle?
