I have used a Fisher gold bug to hunt gold in streams in the North Ga. gold belt with success. Later used a Fisher ID Edge with crappy results looking for coins and rings. Why? Because I thought the VDI would do all the work. Now from reading this forum I found out there is one good way to learn and that is to listen, dig and learn.

Sold my ID Edge, purchased Garrett AT pro. Doing lots of hunting and learning and listening past six months. Love the AT Pro.

Went to a heavily hunted park that is very, very trashy around the picnic tables. The park is one of the most used parks on weekends in north Atlanta.

So two days ago, went for a test of my listening skills in the park in the trashy areas. In 20 minutes using the AT Pro in the Pro Zero mode pulled out $1.90 in clad. All was less than 4" deep. Using the 5 x 8" coil.

My question is, if i go to other older home locations does my above described success translate into finding older deeper coins? I would assume you would get the same audio tone just fainter in the Pro Zero mode on deeper coins. Is this a correct assumption?

Now I am waiting for some rain to test out. We have had virtually no rain since August and the ground is rock hard.

Believe it or not metal detecting is very good for my lower back problems. It seems the walking, swinging, bending, kneeling and digging keep my lower back muscles in shape. Rarely ever have those sharp lower back pains I used to have.

So I am very patient and don't expect to find anything super. But when I do find something it is fun. Well the pull tabs, bottle caps and foil are not that much fun but part of the deal.

Max the listening game is what it's all about. When we detect the sound gets your attention. We watch where we are swinging and the coil overlap.

The high tones are often the good stuff. The deeper good targets will still make a high tone, but won't be as loud.
