I had an original Simplex +. Now there are three more models.
I understand that the less expensive models will come with fewer features and adjustments.

But will they generally offer similar depth between the models?

Depth differences between SF modern detectors from reputable companies, is minimal in mild ground. Ditto for SMF detectors in mid to highly mineralized ground. The new exception is the X-Terra Voyager, which is a Chinese detector that Minelab put its name on.

Here's a short video that shows the poor depth of the Voyager. The video also shows the outstanding depth of the Simplex Lite, even with a smaller coil. It proves my point about how even low cost detectors like the Simplex and its variants, the Vanquish line, etc, have about the same depth as detectors costing 5x more.

I am getting a equinox 900 delivered today but took a serious look at the Nokta Legend but a lot of reviews about people having problems with the software updates

There's very few having software update issues.

In a recent poll of Legend users, only 5% said they had unsolved software issues. Given the massive amount of user error that I see, along with poor metal detecting knowledge in general, then that number is probably around 1% that have legitimate software update issues. That number is also about right in line for alleged update issues on other detectors.

I have seen one, yes just one, posted Legend video that actually shows without a doubt that two different Legends at the same spot at the same time with the same settings had obviously different levels of EMI interference/chatter just because one was running V1.09 and the other was running V1.11.

Otherwise, all of the other (at least 20) videos that I have seen that showed chatter and or depth loss after updating a Legend to V1.11 from an earlier software version, have been full of user error whether it was using a poor test site, poor test procedures like digging a fresh deep hole in mineralized dirt, not showing settings, not showing the orientation of targets in the hole, not using good swing technique, and not even knowing that their settings and the detector itself were contradicting what the video maker's were actually saying in the videos. For example, numerous videos have accompanying verbal audio with phrases like nothing, not hitting it, its struggling referring to the Legend as it swings over a deep target while the detector and its actual responses are showing a totally different story.

Then brand new Legend owners and potential owners who don't know any better read these reports and go WHAAAAT?

I hope you like the Equinox 900 and that it fits your needs. I did not like either of the Equinox 900s that I owned (first one was replaced under warranty by Minelab). As far as I'm concerned after thousands of hours using the Equinox 800 and almost 1000 hours on the Legend, the Legend is the worthy successor to the Equinox 800 and the Equinox 900 definitely is not.

I trust the Legend so much, that I bought a second one at a ridiculous price from an owner that was new to detecting, read all of these reports and dumped his Legend because he thought it was messed up. It works just fine. His loss (or anxiety induced insanity) is my gain.

Nows the time to pick up a Legend cheap by all the sheeple that think it's broken. 99 percent of the posts In the nokta fb group are self induced user error or owners that have no knowledge of computers and software.

Well, Jeff explained it all much more thoroughly than I did. I'm kind of lazy that way :)

Something else to keep in mind, is that the Legend has a multitude of advanced settings and features, and it does so at a very low price point. Problem is, that very low price point attracts a lot of newbies, who know little to nothing about metal detecting, EMI, ground conditions, etc. It also attracts experienced Single Frequency detector users, who aren't aware of the association between EMI and SMF, or are just unfamiliar with advanced detector features and settings.

On top of all that, is user error when it comes to using a computer to do the updates.

I had the 800 and the Nokta simplex I still may grab a legend at some point as I think they are just as competitive in the right hands

I had the simplex and it was good and I may get a legend at a later date. Liked the 800 hope the 900 I got today stands up to its reviews

Sounds like me when it comes to computers

I had a Simplex+ but I couldn't stand the goose like tones, Now have the Legend and have lots to learn, sometimes I wish that I had an easier machine (I'm old school).
