I had a attempted ring return story... found a 82 school ring did my research school refused to help me so I went to the BOE they found the owner and gave me her name I looked it up and called no answer so I knew where she lived because it was a local ring.. I knocked on door, she answered the door and I showed her the ring I found... she began to berate me how dare I invade her privacy and basically told me to stuff the ring... from that day on I refuse to try and return anything... I find it, its mine.. only way I return something is if I am asked to look for it...

....... she began to berate me how dare I invade her privacy ....

I've heard a few ingrate stories like this. Sad. But let's be honest : Most persons that lost a ring 'years ago' have probably long-since-forgotten about it.

Other times, a heart-warming story arises. But yes, sometimes an ingrate story

And yes: This has no bearing on commissioned posse hunts. Naturally those should durned-well-be grateful folk.

Craig, I am in the same boat as you. If fact, I went looking for a lost ring and was given a tip for my time. I did not find it. I really felt bad so I did two more hunts the following week hoping to find it and get it back to her. All total, I put 9 hours with no luck.

Craig, You probably scared the beejesus out of her, when you showed up at here door.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm cool with ring finders and anyone that charges or doesn't charge, or that keeps what they find. That's just people doing what they do, and I get why a ring finder would charge for having to drive out etc.

It's FB posts and the life guards that have mentioned to me this guy keeps blaming other detectorists when he can't find stuff. Thinking about it a bit more last night there's a bit of a hero complex going on.

Reminds me of the drunk marine who showed up unannounced at my door on July 5th wanting his iPhone and military ID back.

LOL.

I haven't had this happen to me, but I always keep these stories in the back of my mind for returns. One guy post about how he went to heaps of trouble to return a ring, and when he turned up to hand it over the owners had the cops waiting for him!

I always check lost and founds on FB etc if I find something that looks recent and has some identifying marks on it.

That would turn me into a ring keeper for sure.

I had something similar, asked to find someones ring..found it and returned. A few months later the same lady that asked if I could help called the police for I was in the water behind there townhomes. Weird is she came down another time after she had called and asked if I could find it again, seems the guy lost it again.. I never found it but I would have thrown it out further, it was a junk wedding band. That pushed me into the hands of.. "The Ring Keepers"

Ring Finders who blame others

My metal detecting has and will always be a Hobby not a business. I enjoy my hobby for the thrill of the hunt, when I find something of value historically or monetarily it only adds excitement to the hunt. I've always accommodated anyone that has ask for my help in finding something Gratias and have never sold anything I've found but have giving things away to others. My expense of the hobby is mine to bear. I don't advertise my hobby as a business pursuit or a means to an end. I enjoy the hobby for its intrinsic rewards. I always encourage others to pursue the hobby and give them helpful advice as to what to purchase and how to use the items. When someone ask me what's the best thing I've found, I tell them JESUS. I feel like IMHO that my efforts do more to foster a positive image of the hobby than advertising as a business or bad-mouthing other's efforts. GOOD HUNTING fellow Pirates.:D

Grunter, I get what you are saying. And I enjoyed your post. And your sentiments *do* come up all-the-time whenever this subject (of this thread) comes up .

But the problem with the above quote/sentiments of yours , is that it seems to imply that : "It's either one, or the other". But: Why can't it be both ? :?:

In other words, it's as if you're implying that if we charge for a service, or take a reward, or operate it as a profit-making endeavor, that:
It is therefore "not a hobby". Or "not done out of kindness".

Or that it fosters a "bad image" of the hobby. Says who ? In fact, sometimes persons are offended if you do NOT accept their tip, etc....

It is entirely possible to do something out of the kindness of your heart, for goodwill to mankind, and to-be-at-peace with your maker, WHILE AT THE SAME being entrepreneurial . They need not be exclusive of each other. Ok ? :?:

I don’t see the appeal in trying to monetize a hobby. Turns it into more of a job. I’ll happily look for free for rings.

Well... she scared me.. she was like 5 ft tall and 4 feet wide... I probably interrupted her nibbling...

If I'm where they lost it at the time, I would happily look for it without expecting anything. But I can see where someone would want to be paid for time and travel. Blaming someone else for finding it first is just an excuse for not finding it...but could be true.

Sounds more like a way to justify still getting at least a tip. If ya think like that don’t go. I stopped doing it as much as I did …. Just because it seemed every one who read a FB post showed up. No need to charge them in most cases I was going hunting any way. That said …. some places it costs a lot to park and other fees I don’t really have.

Years ago I got a call from someone upstate... a woman lost a very valuable ring set on a private beach... I called a friend and we went up there... we were watched the entire time we hunted.. we found her rings in about 10 minutes... they wanted to take us out to lunch... We said no thank you...they then asked what we would like so I said a little gas money... they gave us each an envelope which we did not open until we left but we were well compensated... the ring set was worth around 35k... I'm not going to disclose what we were given... the woman who lost them was very grateful sending us both very nice letters after the fact... I will never turn down a reward.. my time, my gas...

Anyone asking a person to go out of their way to help them should expect to pay expenses. That should be negotiated ahead of time though. Nothing wrong with recouping your costs for an unplanned trip.

I got a call from a metal detector dealer.. I had no contact with the owners of the rings until we met at the beach... all I wanted was gas money...I drive a V-8 gas sucking pig of a truck that is not exactly fuel efficient.

That's definitely understandable. I drive one of those too.
