POINTS - what are they ?

Whenever I hover my mouse pointer over my avatar or anyone's avatar, I see a screen with statistics, i.e., "Messages", "Featured Content", "Reactions", and "Points". I looked in the Forum Help area and did a search on Points, but so far, I've seen no explanation for what these Points are and how you earn(?) points. Can I use them like frequent flyer miles or merchandise credits ? Just kidding on that last question, but was wondering what you can do with these points. I assume they are not redeemable. Inquiring minds want to know

Click on the number of points and you'll see what they are about. For example, when I clicked on your point count this is what came up.

Click on the number of points and you'll see what they are about. For example, when I clicked on your point count this is what came up.

Yep, just like Rudy said, points are given out as "rewards" system for surpassing basically like mini milestones, such as a number of posts, or liked messages.
