My buddy usarmychris and I really enjoy night hunting! Theres nothing out there that really gets you in tune with the sounds of your detector as to what is a good signal and what is junk. We use a nod lamp and just go. I was just wondering how many of you enjoy night hunting as well?

I did it once. It is a lot quieter at night. I can hear the deep faint signals a lot easier. Not many distractions at night.

come to think of it man I'm not why I didn't use my other forum name of "Nighthunter"...oh well like you said there is nothing better to me then a night hunt there is noone around you can hear every faint tone of the detector and hey maybe if your lucky have to mp's show up in the field at 3 AM lol

I personally think my machine detects a tad better when the sun sets, due to radio interference, but Rudy does not think it helps. Cowboy and I think we get an extra inch, maybe it is our terrible soil that makes it so.

Yes there are a lot of things I like about it. Quiet, no distractions, no one to ask if you found anything.

People can't see you. I still don't like detecting if front of a lot of people. You kind of get used to it, but this is nice. I like to do it in total stealth as well.

I don't like to use a white light brighter than a propointer. White lights draw more attention to you than detecting in day. Psychologically they make people think you are a burglar, a la Watergate. A red light does not draw attention, because it is associated with break lights, cars, etc. Often I will use no light other than a propointer, and maybe flip on the red light when having trouble locating the coin, and only use the white light sparingly to see a date on a coin etc, when I am not moving around.

Alot of our night hunts were due to it being over 100 degrees during the day but we had never gotten bothered until the one night my neighbors dog was barking at us and she called the cops not knowing what was going on but they were really nice and understanding about the whole thing. Me and diggin_history have taken full advantage of the big field/playground in front of my house and have recovered 95% of our best finds at night from this field

I agree with everything u just said. And we definitely dont have the lights on the whole time just when we get a good signal and use it for retrieval. The only thing that i dont enjoy about night hunting is all the misquitos! lol

Agreed! Most of our best finds were at night as well! The franklin half u found, the night i found 7 wheats and then the eisenhower all within 7 feet of each other lol, the standing liberty quarter u found.
Lots of good memories!!

i plan to do a lot of night hunting when the weather warms up with my new F75 SE. Has a backlight built into it. I usually sleep in daytime on days off and stay awake at night. Also less people to deal with. Only con about night hunting is hard to grid while detecting.

i think you pulled more rings out of that field then anyone would expect to find in a single place but I do love that field I got my first silver there and a total of 11 silvers

I forgot! I found 2 rings in one hole in that field! It won find of the month on another forum

I do some when it's hot, but pick my places, anytime I night hunt near people the cops usually check me out.

Probably 98% of the time

Howdy... am pretty much a Night Hunter almost all the time. I like the quiet, plus, usually, with the heat here in Phoenix, it just makes more sense. But even if it were not hot here, still be a night hunter. Use my Propointer LED only. The less stuff I carry, for me, the longer I'll hunt, lol.

Just gotta keep an eye out on your back sometimes. (-; And dodge an occasional sprinkler... those can be a pain, but you end up learning the sprinkler schedule for a given park pretty well.

Sometime its funny, as I like to photograph my gold finds when I find them, next to the hole... and I'll have to use the flash on the phone, when I do that (and yeah, its never often enough, lol) I know I light myself up like a football field for a split second, lol.

But, for me, Night Hunting is the way to go. Enjoy it, it relaxes me.

I don't even like to use the light for that, and only do if I am having a lot of trouble.

Another con is the limited number of sites. The parks around here are particularly hunted out as our detection depth is limited to 3-4 inches by bad soil. Then again if you go into stealth mode the number of sites is unlimited, jk lol. I like to hunt at night on the scout trips I lead, to avoid embarrassment and endless interruptions by the kids.

I feel you on the bad soil issue! The Lawton/ Ft Sill area dirt is hard as a freakin rock! It makes for crazy recovery time simply jumping up and down on a shovel just to get your little plug. Digging with a hand trowel is borderline impossible!

I hunt a good deal at night. Most of times I try to stick to open locations(fields/yards). I work 2nd shift so its either morning or night for me. It is easier to hear the targets in my opinion.

I think I flew over Lawton on the way to Albuquerque a few years back. I remember the ground being flat an all of a sudden there were these miniature grand canyon looking ravines out of nowhere. I had to google map lawton to see where it was and kind of guess based on the presence of mountains whether your soil was mineralized as well, and noticed those canyons, and that it was in a direct path to ABQ. I also remember how green the vegatation and ground was here then you reach a point in texas or Oklahoma when everything turns brown. So guess it is the dryness that makes the soil so hard. That is what it is like here, except for the months of October through April. Really this year we didn't get rain until December, and it has rained like crazy. I think it rained 10-18 days in the last 3 weeks, since Christmas! and about 6 days in a row until our freak snow yesterday.

Wow that sounds just like Lawton and it is most definitely the dryness that makes it so hard. Those valleys your talking about are the wichita falls mountain range we have. Although ive heard they are more like hills to people who live near real mountains. Otherwise it is pretty flat

Then a little bit farther west, probably in Texas there was this huge windmill farm. I like flying a stare out the window like a dog in a car, lol!!!

The windmills are everywhere https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDIQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmaps.google.com

Also there are all those weird looking irrigation circle fields everywhere...
