Anyone have a clue as to what this might be? Engraved Patd. Aug 1, 1911 and a serial number. The reverse side says Hunt (Something) Ferris & Co. Harvard(?) Illinois, and more numbers.
This wonderful old wooden crate sign advertises "Cannon Ball Door Hangers - Mfr'd By - Hunt, Helm, Ferris & Co. of Harvard, Illinois - Patented Oct. 27, 08. - Jan. 5, 09. - Apr, 20, 09." The sign measures 15" x 6 1/2" and has a handy sawtooth hanger on the back for hanging on your wall. The patina of the wood is rich and mellow and the black advertising is clear. The condition is very good and the wood has no cracks. There is a very slight warp to the sign, very minor. A solid old sign that looks awesome hanging on a wall!
"Manufacturers of farm supplies, including the Hunt, Helm, Ferris & Co. of Harvard (better known as "Star Line") distributed their own hardcover catalogs that offered free blueprints."
There's actually a catalog from this company on ebay right now, dated 1914:
