Well, it is early spring here in Western Canada and I was getting a little cabin feverish so I headed out into the back yard of the house we bought late last fall. It was -1degC here (30 F to y'all) today, which is much to cold to be metal detecting but I went out anyway and here is a picture of what I found. Mostly clad coins, but I was excited to find the brass (I think) tip off of a horse harness part called a hames I believe. As well, the small circular piece with the hole in the center is probably a copper dial off of a kerosene lantern so it was exciting to find these older type items as the house is 1950's.

Very nice! Right in your own backyard eh?

I recommend everyone search their backyard.

Warmer weather Hopes...

Living in Maine I understand the urge to treasure hunt while facing rock hard ground... I was doing the same thing the day the ground got soft enough to dig but the temp was still too cold to be desirable... It's always nice to be a bale to find things in your own yard that are interesting and prompt you to think there's more there... Sounds like your house was once a farm field or some part of a farm... That can always lead to good things... Good luck and thanks for sharing your digs...

Great digs, specially for a house built in the 50's. I have coin envy for all you Canadian folks and your loonies and toonies!

Yea, the loonies and toonies sure help the total$ go up quicker...there has been some speculation here now about a $5 coin too, but exept for the fact that I like to MD, I am not very excited about that, you already just about have to wear a belt if you have a pocket full of coins.

In my own back yard

Some of the best finds definitely come from close to home. The item you referred to looks a lot like what they put on bull horns after they cut the point off the horns, to prevent the bull from goring anyone. Nice collection of finds.

Nice find narrowroad! I am with z118 as to the "loonies & toonies", great looking coins, most US coin is pretty blah.

Hopefully I will be able to pos another picture soon when I finish the yard, I have only done about half of the back yard, although that is the half that is closest to the house, I have the back half of the back yard and a small front yard to do yet. I have been suprised how much there has been, I was just hoping to find a couple coins to tide me over until the weather improves and I can get out somewhere good, but now the yard is on the priority list.
Funny story too, I have a two and a half year old daughter who was digging with me and I thought she would be pretty excited to see the coins coming out of the ground. But, much to my disappointment, her favorite item was a beer bottle cap that had a polar bear on it..lol. Oh well, at least some good comes from digging caps..

It is now later spring and i have spent a couple more hours in my back yard and have turned up a pile of clad coins. I can't believe the amount of coins there are out there. I have added a picture of the coins as well as an assortment of iron thingys and doo-dads. I think my total so far is $4.89 in coins including a 1942 penny, a silver 1968 quarter and a couple of coins that have met their maker after a wrestling match with a lawnmower.
