How can Rap be called music?

I don't listen to rap but I am offended by this thread posting. No one cares but at no time would I post that I don't like other types of music. How about not singling out of genre? You are a admin so I guess you can do what you want. This kind of posting leads to unnecessary drama and racial comments...my two cents.
All I can say is WOW. You need to grow some thicker skin, my friend. All I see are opinions. Last I knew, having an opinion, favorable or not, was still an option. Now, if someone were to say Rap causes people to kill I might take that as offensive.

I started playing guitar in 1964. Self-taught and proud to say I still can't play from a sheet of music 58 years later LOL. I still love my CCR, but as far as playing guitar, nothing pleases me more than good old 80s metal. I think it is the challenge that does it for me. The satisfaction I believe is the driver.

It is my opinion and to most of you it will not matter. Being Bi-racial (Black and White) it does bother me. Maybe because I personally don't see color, I only see people as human not by the color of their skin. I said it could or can lead to racial comments.

I hear ya'.
I'm mostly into high energy screaming guitars (mostly 70s), but I also can appreciate the creativity of a good lyricist/wordsmith.
Over the years I've composed and recorded a lot of songs. I call them songs, but I've just never been happy with writing lyrics and instead concentrating on the music. Now that I'm retired and have my home studio ready, I've started writing lyrics for my music. As soon as I get enough never LOL I plan to record them and release them.

I understand where you're coming from now. Personally, I have never ever associated any music genre with race, but I do see where it could happen. Race never did enter my thoughts until you brought it up. Just saying.

Not all rappers are Black. And not all rappers are male either.
To me, music transcends all that. It's about the music, not what anyone looks like. Hendrix, War, the Chambers Brothers, Carlos Santana, and Living Color changed all that 50(+) years ago.

I understand what are you saying.... To me a lot of the music now a days is crap not just rap. I enjoy the old music like the Bee Gees, Earth, wind and Fire. Music I listened to growing up riding with my parents in the car.

Hahaha! I grew up listening to Motown among others.
For me, color has never been a thing, and I grew up in a rural berg that only had one Black family back then.

The only genre I don't enjoy is new country. I also agree that music is just not the same anymore. I was born in '89 so I missed my favorite generation of music, but the 90's had some ok music too. Seems when 2k hit the computer did not crash, they only got stronger and more obvious. This thread is already turning, you shouldn't throw stones if you live in a glass house, just saying...

I miss the old music. There was no autotune to make a mediocre singer sound great.
The audience didn’t throw things at the performers, instead they sat quietly and enjoyed the show.

This song originally came out in 1955, in the movie "Unchained". It has been covered by over
670 singers and recorded over 1000 times. Harry Belafonte, Todd Duncan (the first African American
opera singer), Elvis Presley, Barry Manilow, the Platters, Perry Como, Roy Orbison, U2, Cyndi Lauper,
LeAnn Rimes, Phil Collins, Neil Diamond, Hall and Oates and Elvis Presley, have all sang this song.

But, nobody has ever done it better than Bobby Hatfield (Aug 10, 1940 – Nov 5, 2003) of
the Smothers Brothers.

LIVE on stage in a 1965 Andy Williams show, one take, no autotune, a young Bobby, suffering from a head
cold and nervous as hell because his Mom was in the audience to hear him sing live for her first time,
proceeded to humbly demonstrate his four octave range countertenor singing prowess.

Even kids today are in awe when they hear his version of this song.

If you didn’t hear this song in the ‘60s, you might have heard it in 1990, when it was featured in the Patrick
Swayze/Demi Moore film “Ghost.”

I am old enough to have heard it in 1965, as I liked to view the Andy Williams show and I still get goosebumps
when I hear it.

Ghost was a classic, Swayze sure was talented. Loved his SNL skits with Chris Farley. RIP to both of them!

What is your definition of music?

I think it is lazy to divide music along genre lines. Why pledge allegiance to a genre or a style? There are jewels and garbage in every genre and often the genre line is blurry. How much rap have you listened to?

You can find some real gems if you look for what are considered the classics of the rap genre. People putting together words and rhythms in a interesting way, just like Bob Dylan does in the rock/folk genres.

Talent crosses all genre lines. I've met people with natural talent in all genres of music, and it is amazing in all cases. I worked hard for many years to gain what people may see as talent in my guitar playing. Singers have always blown my mind. I've met kids who have the ability to sing and never took a lesson in their lives. I met this kid, a girl maybe 15, who had a voice that just captivated me completely. I could listen to her sing all day long. All natural talent. Told her Dad he needed to get her discovered. I don't know what ever happened, but it happens in all aspects of music.

As mainly a guitar player, I can play keyboard, drums, bass, pretty much any stringed instrument, DISCO just never did much for me. I'm sure it had its share of those especially talented people, but I just never cared for it. Rap has been the same way for me. I'm sure it has those naturally talented Rappers but the music just never appealed to me. Could be I think most of the music is computer-generated so musical talent is not a big part of Rap. Lyrics, yes. All about the words and how they are used. That is a talent.

He's another white rapper, originally from Canada but lives in the U.S. now. He's also 100% independent, so he doesn't get any airtime on the radio because there isn't a label pushing his stuff. That alone makes it miraculous that he tops the charts so often. It's his content that grabs people's attention, just like it did mine.
Because he is anti-industry...Eminem can't even afford to buy a Rolex watch being part of the systerm plus his music is trash these days... old slim shady was great.... Tom spits facts and can't be cancelled all they can do is shadow ban his music like they did with his recent Race War...

My preferred genre is older rock, but I'm with you on Tom MacDonald. While he's predominantly a rapper, he's quite a bit more diverse an artist and does a lot more than just rap.

For years, I hated rap. IMO, most of it was nothing more than rythmic chanting, and to me that wasn't music. Then Tom Came along and changed all that. His stuff is understandable and meaningful, and depending on the cut there is quite a bit that is actual music as we know it. He has several tunes that have topped the Billboard Charts in Pop and Alternative like the love song he wrote for his girlfriend called "Ghost". His latest release (Superman) is acoustic, with no autotune, and is pertinent to things going on in the world today. Check it out on YouTube.
I actually know more people over 60 following him than I do young people.
I'm sure you heard Ashes its a awesome a mix of rap and rock...
Nova just put put out a new song Lost girls its very good she is working on a album....

Not bad, but still just doesn't do anything for me. I think with Rap it is all about the lyrics, whereas metal is all about the music.
I like all music except for old tired music... elevator type stuff... Check out the link I just posted about Tom Macdonalds Ashes a mix of rock and rap .... I think its awesome... he has such a diverse group of fans he edits out the swear words.... many of his fans and 50 and up... he has 80 year olds listening to rap ...
