When I first found this item today in an older home site I thought that it was a cigarette lighter. But after cleaning it with oil and opening the top, it was clear that it wasn't a lighter. The inside is hollow and a plate with a star like hole covering about half of the opening. I tried to id it on google lens, but didn't get any good matches. If you know what it is, please let me know. Thanks

Yes looks like a match safe.

Speaking for unusual lighters. I found this in a tot lot years ago. Looks like a typical Zippo lighter until you open it up.

Whatever it is it’s very cool. I’m thinking match safe too.

With the deer picture on the side, it might be a container for buck lure. That strange hole would be for a wick which would be pulled out to disperse the scent from absorbent material in the bottom. Google has at least one small cannister which could carried in the pocket, then opened when you got to the hunt site. Just a wild guess.

Decorating says cosmetics or not an everyday item. Rounded ends... Must be held not set down. Star insert held something? Something it dipped into being carried in the bottom? Snuff? Interesting item.

Great ID, Sage!! Never knew or would have guessed such a thing existed…but know that I know, it makes perfect sense! Pretty much everyone smoked indoors back in the day…this would allow the smoker a “fashionable” way to continue mingling at, say, a dinner party without rudely flinging ashes all over the host’s carpets ;)

Thanks for the effort in id'ing the item I found! Now I know exactly what it is.

Pretty cool and unique find, Pine!
