Can you make a living out of MD

Thats my thinking, get some fresh air, get out of the house,do some thing with your day, walk the beach ,and whos knows might earn beer money

I think after a few yrs of serious detecting you could have a decent little chunk of cash and precious metals but definately not enough to make a steady living off of.

Sure

If your a guy like Gary Drayton.and find a couple emerald rings from the 1715 fleet. $$$$$ CHAAAA CHING. Its possible.

Most have full time jobs and hammer the beaches after work or on the weekends.

NEVER SAY NEVER THO.

Well unless you hit the mother load ,it usualy pays around one to 5o cents an hour , if your in a good park . Love the hobby but would'nt give up my $25- 50 an hour job for it ! But thats just me .:D

i would think it would take all the fun outa it and become stressful like a job, if i had to live off my finds i'd be living in a cardboard box over a heating grate somewhere  again it would all depend on location where your hunting and being consistent at cashing in on good finds.......i'm still tryin to pay off my batteries

Making a living from detecting

Well, I figure I make about 20 cents an hour detecting. But as someone else said, if you lived in Europe where the really old stuff is you would stand a better chance.
I was watching a TV show about detecting earlier in the year, one was from England and one was from the US. The guy from the use showed off his older coins from the mid 1700's. They guy from England showed off his older coins from the dawn of time, well, at least as far back as 1000 AD. Hmmmm, too bad the Romans never made it this far.

Still most of the comments are people looking at themselves, today, and not after retirement. Most people have their house, car, and pretyy much everything else bought and paid for. There is Social Security, retirement plans (401k), savings. There is also the senior discount. The thing is, you got to be careful about spending, because you aren't likely to get another job, and earn more. It's not like metal detecting is going to cover all your bills and expenses, but it will help you do a little better than just getting by.

Even if you only find $2 in change a day, that's an extra 60 month. Not unreasonable, not all that bad either.

Why turn something you enjoy into a stressful time? Think you don't like pulltabs now? Try hitting the 50th pull tab of the day when you are in need of coins......

Have to disagree with the lottery odds comment... Beaches yield bling to those who learn and work them diligently. Much better chances of finding a ring than winning the lottery.

I'd love to take a month to do nothing but detect somewhere like Playa Del C and see what it would yield. Might can "swing" it next summer.

people I agee with houndpound on this one. Keep your 401k and dont quit your day job. Your gona be lucky ta buy batteries gas food ect. Its great to have a dream and live it. But you have to pull your head out of your hine end ever now and then and just really savor the time you have with your hobby.
