Anyone Geocaching?

Geocaching

We started geocaching in the late 1990's, when there were NONE here in East Texas. We've have had a lot of fun and would still be doing it if I hadn't had this stroke. The grandkids and I have walked many miles and recovered hundreds, also hid many, from NM to ME and most states in between and overseas. Carol K., I've found a FEW in parks but the majority have been away from cities and towns, some way out in the desert and mountains and deep woods... I miss the challenge, excitement and walking.

Wow, there are 4 caches in the area I have been hunting, with 2 of them litterally within 200-300 feet. I may have to keep my eyes out as I spread out a bit farther into the woods. It appears this is quite popular in my area. I may have to give it a try if I can ever find the time.

Geocaching is all kinds of fun. Alot of them will send you to some litle known areas. Which could be beneficial to our hobby. Plus alot of the time they already have permission in most cases to have people there lookng for the caches, So you can rest easy while you are slinging your coil. Definetley recomended for those who have spare time. Im almost at my 100th cache. Then Im going to start putting them out there myself.

ill have to say...i was courious about this do downloaded the app on my iphone and found my first one...was crazy...it was right across the highway from my neighborhood.
now got my sights set on a few more so ill have to see if i can find some more

I had found a site for that and tried one that is close to me. To me it really isn't too interesting. I'd rather find something that I don't know what it will be, opposed to something someone purposely put there.

i've been caching for a couple of years now and for me, finding the cache is pretty cool. usually there's isn't anything to spectacular in the cache, but sometimes it's just the thrill of the hunt and some of the new and interesting places where the caches are placed that is the real reward! a lot of them are in real scenic areas, historical places, some great hiking trails, etc...
i've been a geocacher before i became a MDer and there are numerous places where i've been caching that would also be great places for detecting! ;) kinda combine the 2 hobbies. and at least with the caching there's no digging involved, lol.

Anybody tried this? We're thinking about doing it for a change of pace, and we might even find some new spots to detect.

We just signed up at geocaching.com and couldn't believe how many caches are hidden in our area. :wow:

Ive been geocaching for 8 years now and at one of my hidden caches someone contacted me when he was metal detecting that my cache was hidden in a old unknown cemetary .I couldnt believe it and unfortunetly i had to archive my cache it actually made the newspaper.I am just now looking to get my first metal detector and well wait till after the snow clears to start.I know of alot of places to go when i do start i cant wait ! what is a good reasonable metal detector i would like to stay under $200 if i could thanks! and happy caching

I've tried it with my brother, but never found the targets... It may be different with MDing since the targets would be inaccessible to someone without a metal detector... I'm in!

The Ukena boys have been geocaching for a couple of years. We have found some very interesting places by geocaching. If the finds with the md are slow the three boys go try to find the nearest geocaches. We communicate via walkie talkie so that they can have fun and I can continue swinging. Just another way to keep my kiddos out of video games. Much like detecting the people I have met are very good people!

Fellow cacher from Maryland here. Been seriously caching about a year.
Have 400 finds under my belt but have slowed down the past year with a newborn at home.

Caching name is : Team L.A.C.E.

When we went to Orlando last year I stopped to find a geocache at "Big Tree Little Tree Park" north of Orlando

You talking about Big Tree Park in Longwood? Home of the Senator?

Somehow about two weeks ago, some lady managed to burn down two of the three big trees there...

Also whenever I go to somewhere I know there is a cache while im coinshooting I will try to find it, but since I dont have a GPS I use google maps.... still havent found any yet

My wife and I started caching July of last year. We love it when we have the time to get out. It's amazing the places within 30 miles of your home that you'd otherwise not no existed. The sport takes you to some great places. We have just over 200 finds so far in 6 states. Great exercise to!

As a mater of fact... I'd say I combined MD'ing & Caching today!

I've just gotten into it in the past month and have started Benchmark hunting also. I have looked for a few Benchmarks in the one section of beach where I MD regularly without much success while actively looking for them, but today, I stumbled on a piece of rebar 7 inches below the sand as I was walking out from a long hunt. I was just about ready to shut off the PI machine when I get this booming hit. I went ahead and dug it because it was a tiny, loud hit. I shoved the 720 in and scooped the first load of sand, and on the second bite I hit the rebar. On the top of the rebar was a red plastic cap that said FDOT Ref. so while this is NOT the benchmark, it should help me find it I hope!

We geocache as a family and I think we would all highly recommend it. You can get a decent GPS device for about $99.00 (buy a compass like device rather than a map GPS, and do not try to use your phone - we tried that when starting out and it would snap to the closest address).

Have fun.
