So I just purchased the 540 and after watching reviews seems like I should've went with the legend. Should I return it and get that? Im a noobie but was told the 540 was slower in response time and more for beaches which I'm not near any. Thanks in advance!

I owned a 540 and sold it for a Legend.

The 540 is a fun detector, easy to use, and has very good performance. But, the Legend beats it in every way, has many more features, and is far more versatile.

The questions I have for you, is why exactly do you think you should have gone with the Legend? Are there specific things you don't like about the 540?

Honestly I haven't even opened it up yet.. I bought a cheap one off of Amazon and returned it because it would beep on everything everywhere. PalliPartners Metal Detector. But before I use it and possibly return it I'm just afraid I bought the wrong one.

Neither would be the "wrong one" unless you planned on getting your detector wet.

Given that you bought a cheap detector off of Amazon, I'll assume you're new this :)

Detectors like the Legend, are packed with features and advanced settings. So much so, that not only can it be overwhelming to beginners, but with these advanced settings detectors, a beginner can easily make settings errors, that drastically change the performance of such detectors.

The 540 is much more of a "turn on and go" detector, with very basic settings and features.
You may use the 540, and grow out of it like I did. But, it's unlikely you'll grow out of a Legend. Thing is, they are both excellent performers for what they are designed for.

What kind of things would you like to find, and what are the types of sites that you will be hunting in?

Honestly I'm hunting for coins, rings, etc. i live in Indiana and it's going to be more ground than sand hunting.

Well, let me put it this way:

For not much more money, the Legend is much more of a detector than the 540. However, I don't know if you need that much more of a detector, I don't know if you would be overwhelmed with the Legend, and I don't know if cost is an issue for you.

You're either going to be content with your 540, or wish you spent around $200 more to get a better detector. Like I said, you could very well grow out of a 540 as you learn more and more, but you probably wouldn't grow out of a Legend.

I agree but in your opinion I can return it with it being within 30 days so what would you do? I am nervous about more complicated and I do like the turn on and go with the 540

See, it's your "nervous about complicated" that makes me nervous :)

You could use the Legend with the default settings and be fine, but the urge will be to play around with all the advanced settings, and that's when trouble can begin. Granted, it's easy to reset it back to factory defaults, but you may not even realize you changed some setting as you play around with the settings.

Given your apprehension, I suggest you try out your 540 and see what happens.

Do you have any experience at all with metal detectors?

Do you have a digging tool and pinpointer?

Ok.

Here's some quick tips to get you started:

1) Read the manual, practice playing with the settings, and watch some videos.

2) If you have a coil smaller than the 12x9, then start with that.

3) Practice in your own yard.

4) When you turn on the 540 it will go through an EMI noise reduction procedure. You'll notice that it does nothing to stop the EMI noise. Don't be alarmed at this point, because a metal detector doesn't know the difference between an EMI signal, and a signal from metal in the ground. As such, EMI noise reduction on all SMF detectors, is generally a "sham". The only way it can work, is through software trickery algorithms, that will, in one way or another, decrease raw performance...but that's another story. For the EMI noise, just reduce the sensitivity as necessary. Note that EMI noise is reduced significantly once the coil is swinging on the ground.

4) Start in "Custom Mode". If I remember correctly, it has the most discrimination for its default settings. Coin mode has less discrimination, so you'll dig more trash. Jewelry mode only discriminates out ferrous targets, so you'll dig a lot of trash. The point to all this, is you don't want to start out digging constant trash, because that will get frustrating really quick. Start with high discrimination, and then you can start reducing the discrimination at your own comfort level, based on your needs.

I agree with what Dig.... said. But an advanced detector when adjusted wrong can miss targets as well as a Vanquish. Speed adjustment is a perfect example. Some day you may get to a point where those adjustments can help you get a few more finds or maybe enable you to detect in a more 'hostile' ground but chances are there won't be that many more finds (and maybe less). If you search then you will find many people have wondered if they missed things because of their settings and they very well may have but may have found things others missed.. Since you are new and unless you are really concentrating on everything vs enjoying the hunt with a very good detector, then I would recommend the vanquish. I can say this having just bought 2 for my son and daughter in law.
Btw I own both.

Thanks for the replies everyone it helped a lot. I think I will stay with the vanquish for now. I'll have to read the manual because I have no clue on how to adjust the noise reduction process. Also Rock Jock no I don't have a technical background.

I had a 540, now have a Legend.
I think you are better off learning the basics with the 540.
If you got the kit you have the 8" coil.
Should work very well for you.
Carry spare batteries because that machine is hungry!
Later you could upgrade to an Equinox 600 or 800 and keep the VDI #s you will be familiar with.
Not sure if the 700 and 900 use the same numbers.

Mrs. atomicbrh hunts with a 340. I will buy her any detector she wants. She has been so successful with the 340 that she is not giving it up. If you like this hobby and want a more complicated detector, I would suggest keeping the 540 as it will make a great backup detector. If you decide to keep the 540, buy a RNB battery pack from a reputable dealer and you won't have any problems with battery life. The Vanquish series is equally as good in the dirt as at the beach.

Actually no the kit I got only came with the 12" coil

I've got a 440, the Vanquish series is quite nice. It'll really help you get the hang of the basics. Like everyone else has already said, later on you may feel like you want a Legend, you can always upgrade later. But I've been using my 440 for 3 years now, mostly dirt hunting, and I don't feel the need to upgrade
