Western & Eastern Treasures Magazine Out Of Print

disapearance of printed metal detecting magazines

The March 2019 issue of Western & Eastern Treasures Magazine will be its last printed issue and from that point on the magazine will only be available in digital format. I'm wondering if this will be the first step toward disappearing like other MD'ing magazines like Lost Treasure, Treasure, Treasure Search etc.etc.

I think that it is a real shame that printed magazines like Lost Treasure & Western & Eastern treasure that have been around for so very long will no longer be around. I doubt Western & Eastern Treasure will be around long after it goes all digital. Lost treasure started pushing the digital version a few years back and even had a free online monthly version. They even gave away a free detector every month . In the end I guess not enough people subscribed to their digital and it all shut down. I used to send suggestions when I saw news articles that would make good articles. Didn't see anything about it in the last issue I got so it must have been a sudden decision . If anyone has any farther information on what happened I would love to know.

I totally agree with you that eventually W&ET may soon be gone after going all digital.

Well this Suxs ... I have many months left on my subscription and like many here I'd rather have print to read lengthy articles than a digital version. Maybe it just me getting old. The only thing that stays the same is the fact that everything changes. This is no exception.

I think a lot of people will be in the same boat , I am sure I had a number of issues of Lost Treasure Magazine on my subscription left , looks like now there isn't even any one to contact . I had just got a offer to early renew my Western & Eastern magazine print copy a couple of weeks ago. I am not interested in the digital version at all.

I used to get these way back when and I still miss 'em. I am always picking up old back issues.

Glasshopper, your post with the magazine photos reminded me that I have ONE old issue of Old Bottle Magazine (1975). See photo below. Forgot where I picked it up, but I must have bought it for the insulator story, as I was into glass insulators for a while also.

I just now did a quick search and you might have seen this site already, but just in case here is a site with an archived old bottle magazine online -

https://issuu.com/antiquebottles/docs/september12final-optimized

Wasn't aware of that site - Thanks Gary!

Glad to help Glasshopper, I knew there was a site that archived old vintage copies of department store catalogs (I thought of the post at this link https://metaldetectingforum.com/showpost.php?p=2658046&postcount=14 so I thought maybe there was one for old bottles too.

There is a site that archives old books, movies, ect. that are public domain or permission was given by the author, I searched that site and found a 1920 book on old bottles -

When I called them on the phone I was told that I'd only receive 5 digital issues to replace my five print issues I had left. Contacted them by Email and they gave me a year to make up for the difference in price but I won't be renewing when the time is up.

Thanks, Jimther, I do have that one too. I have a small collection of insulators, I kinda lost interest in 'em when I realized that once you have all the common ones, the rare colors and CD #s were really expensive to buy (not to mention the weight!).

Gary, thanx for that second link.

That's a very sad story......same thing sort of happened to me. I lost many back issues of "Treasure", "Treasure Search", and W&ET magazine from the 1980's and some old books on metal detecting, not to mention a box full of oddball finds when I moved back in 1990. I think my ex-wife may have "accidentally" or even on purpose threw them all away.

We started a metal detecting library for our club back in the '80's. We had around twenty-five books for the members to check out and read. I got to counting the ones that I had and I had over seventy myself. Sadly these too were lost with my storage shed.

Yea I think they're shooting themselves in the foot. A lot of people are not going to renew when the subscription runs out and I don't see how they can attract new subscribers equal to those who let their subscription lapse with only a digital version.

Me I like to take my mag and read in the hot tub but dont see that happening with a digital version. Oh well the death of another good magazine. I'm guessing they did this due to costs but forgot to factor in the subscriber's wants and wishes.

With such a limited market of viewers out there , you wouldn't think they could afford to loose the share of the market of people that like printed copies.

it's a shame that after more than 50 years its come to this.

With Tesoro out of business they'll lose some advertising money and I noticed that for a while now Kellyco hadn't been running ads anymore, another big source of revenue gone.

Today 2-12-19 I received my instructions from W&ET regarding the conversion of my subscription to digital. Only thing is, I converted it a week ago. I guess the mail is slow around these parts. Also, I called to see if back issues other than the annual "Silver & Gold" issuesare still available for sale and was told that they are not due to a lack of interest.

Some one could probably buy up all their old back issues and sell them in batches on line ,if they could get them cheap enough.

I was thinking that they'd want to get rid of as many as they could now that they're going to digital only but the guy I talked to didn't seem to want to bother trying to sell me any. A while back they were selling back issues for $2 each.
