In my five years of detecting I have yet to find a skeleton key and it is definitely one of my bucket list items yet to find. I had an hour to burn so I grabbed my gear and headed out. I still haven't found a skeleton key, but I did find the hole it goes into. I'm just guessing, but my thought is that this is they keyhole to a chest perhaps? I only say that because of the hole on each end looks to be nail holes. The piece is 2" tall by 1" wide.

Oh well, it's still a cool find to me though.

Thanks for looking and happy hunting to all!

Don't you love it when something out of the ordinary pops up? It's in nice shape too.

Love finding these things, almost as cool as finding the keys that fit in them.
This is called an Escutcheon plate...they can be plain or pretty fancy.
Yours is way cool because it is fancy and not square.
I have found two in my career so far, one with a key nearby but even if this was not the key that fit that lock that was rare.
Now go out and find that key!
