Stimulus Check = New Detector?

GKL, Sounds like you manage what you have very well, great job man! Not many people can say that!
Same here, I don't make a high amount but we own our house outright, own our car and have zero credit card debt. Things like car insurance and health insurance we pay in a lump sum at the beginning of the year.
I've been down the living on credit road earlier in my life and refuse to do it ever again, I sleep far better at night living the way we do...

I have no problem being proven wrong, but whether or not you're an essential employee has nothing to do with whether you get the stimulus check or not.

Unless I misunderstood it also I think you are right, the only ones I think who won't get any check at all are:

"Only individuals whose annual adjusted gross income exceeds $99,000 will not get a payment"

You're right. No correlation between essentialness of job and being sent a stimulus check. I should have phrased that better. Two independent statements.

Sounds like you have a handle on things too, good managing skills and methods !

Not having a mortgage payment is a real blessing and makes a big difference !

We also pay our car insurance (and home insurance) in a lump sum instead of monthly and get a better deal. We have a Medicare/Humana plan (I think it's called Humana Advantage) where we have a zero monthly out of pocket premium, and by choosing to get our prescriptions via Humana mail-order we have a zero copay on about 99% of the prescriptions we use, I think my wife had one that was just a few dollars copay.

Sorry, but I've never worked union and never will. Always treated my employees right so they never felt the need. There was a time for unions, but they, and the super rich have killed American industry. JMO
No need to apologize. We all have our own opinions!

BTW, back to the original question, after seeing a friend of mine who just bought his first detector, an Eq800, I think I'd give it a swing. It seems like the real deal. Hoping this neck will heal someday and I can get back to detecting. Sure do miss it.

Pretty sure. Plus, it's adjusted gross income (AGI). Somebody making 100k and maxes out their 401(k) and a Health Savings Account (HSA) would have an AGI of 70,500-77,500 depending on whether they're also making catch up contributions into those accounts. That's basically the difference of not getting a check at all versus getting the full amount.

So, somebody in their 50s making 100k and maxing out those account contributions would get the full 1200 dollar check. Somebody making well over 100k could get a partial check this same way, just as somebody making between 75k-100k could get a full check.

Ahhh..I thought that might be the case with your statement, but then I saw the same sentiment pop up a few more times. There's plenty of confusion around these checks, so it doesn't hurt to clarify.

Many people seemed very pleased with the Nox 800 (including me) just do a forum search and I'd be surprised it the positive reviews don't far outnumber any negative reviews. Sorry about your neck, that seems like a tough area to have problems with, hope it heals up sooner than later.

I'm not as smart in the financial area as my wife is, but then again she graduated from college with honors with a degree in accounting, so I glean from her smarts in that area

Was thinking about my post later last night and told my wife that someone would reply just as you did. I do not begrudge you drawing SS, and never said I did, so just unwind the knickers just a bit. And regardless of whether $1200 is chump change to anyone or not, doesn't really change the basic arguement of fairness anyway. Besides the $1200 is not a SS payment, it's a payment to help those who are struggling during these unprecedented times and (I stress AND) it's money to help stimulate the economy. In fact, why should someone who is drawing SS need this payment (since they are still being paid) unless it's to help stimulate the economy.

Here's another point, I am 65 and could be drawing SS but I choose to work because I love my job and the people I work with plus my employer seems to value my contribution to the company. Plus I think I bring some wisdom and knowledge to the younger folks there. Also, I suffer from chronic neck pain (which has kept me from detecting the last 2 years), so I'm sure I could be on SS Disability, since by about 1:00 p.m. I can't even sit at my desk, but I choose to work through the pain.

I also own another business which my youngest son operates because I can't be there because of the neck pain. That business is currently closed with all the emploees furloughed until the corona virus passes. Those employees are collecting unemployment and hopefully will get there stimulus checks also. Meanwhile our fixed expenses go on. That's where my $1200 would go.

Listen, I am not complaining because anyone is getting whatever payment is due them, I'm just not sure about the fairness of putting a limit on the income. And I'll add one more rant, if you are drawing disability and you are really able to work (and you know who you are), get off your a$$ and get to work when this is all over.

Peace be with you and happy Palm Sunday.

no reflection on you personally, however, the logic APPEARS to be that anyone earning more than 99,900 doesn't "need" a stimulus check,so therefore, people who make that amount, or more get to pay for others making less..
it's as the asians say! it's..suuuup to you, as to whether, or not you want to accept this. if not, then i would say you have an argument with the fed!..good luck with that!

I know many folks who make well over 100k a year, but give them 3 months without salary and they are more broke than other friends who only make 50k a year but live more modestly.
Many folks are about to learn that lesson in a very hard way...

this is "dead nuts" correct! the more you make, the more you want, and when you get it, you don't live within your means,so you will suffer! ..gotta be smart when playing with money! ..

BTW, I drive a 20 year old Acura TL with 250,000 miles on it that I bought new in 2000. Still drives like new so I'll keep driving her until one of us dies. Been married 45 years and she still drives like new also. Maybe a few more squeaks. It doesn't take much to please me.

I’m not spending their funny money.
If I do get a check it’ll be used to pay my taxes, how redundant.

That's what I'm gonna do, throw it at my Property taxes..;)

In South Carolina they have what is called the "Homestead Exemption" and one of the qualifications is simply being 65 or older.

"The Homestead Exemption is a complete exemption of taxes on the first $50,000 in Fair Market Value of your Legal Residence...."

…..so our yearly property taxes on our home is less than $5

If you live in South Carolina check this link for details:

https://dor.sc.gov/lgs/homestead-exemption

If you live in another state do an online search to see if your state has a similar program.

The place I work pays well, and I tell all of the new people - save - save - save. Some of them spend every dime they make, I guess assuming the job will last forever. I tell them to have a year's salary in liquid assets or cash in the bank. They usually just laugh it off. I tell them to put at least 10% in a retirement fund + the company adds another 6% - some say they will eventually. I have been there 24 years, and when my wife and I want something significant, we make a budget and save up to buy it - without tapping into our emergency funds. It is scary to me that people live only for today with no regard for the future.

Some people grow up wanting immediate gratification of having to have everything they want "now" like kids who get an allowance without even have to do any chores to earn it. I had chores as a kid and I remember getting 25 cents allowance at first, it may have went up to a dollar later. I worked a part time job at a fast food place at 15, and joined the Navy at 17 and worked some fairly hard jobs after getting out of the Navy.

I'm now retired and my weekly allowance is up to $5 a week  now that is just for me to have pocket money, not to buy my clothes or stuff like that which comes out of the household budget, and I usually don't even spend my allowance right away, I'll save it up for a while for when I want a new "toy" and my financial advisor (my wife ) has at times freely added from the household budget to what I needed to get something.

Nowadays it seems some kids feel deprived if they don't have their own iPhone, ipad, and maybe $50 a week allowance

(I know not all kids are that way though, just some, and sadly those kids grow up to not be wise with their money as adults)

I guess I have a different take on all of this.

My wife is on SS and I am still working as I am a programmer and I worked at home anyways. The rest of my office is now working at home as well.
When this came about with the stimulus checks my wife and I decided that we really don't need the money. We decided to See how we could pay it forward to people in need.. but our Motto is "Charity Starts at Home" so we called all of our immediate relatives to see how they are doing. We did Not Mention the Stimulus checks.. Well turns out my Mom who has roommates who are out of work and unsure when they will even get their checks not to mention one of her roommates is stuck in Mexico so, no idea when she or if will be back had to call her landlord for the first time in 10 years to let them know that the Rent will be late..

Well although I haven't received any checks yet I sent her $2400 ( the amount of our stimulus).. I have to say it was a HUGE sigh of relief for my Mom..

So my thoughts are if you are out of work.. SAVE it .. you may need it.. If you are doing good still Pay it forward.. and remember "Charity Starts at Home" !!!

My wife and I are both retired. I spent 20 years in the Navy so we qualify for medicare and Tricare for Life. What Medicare allows but does not pay tfl picks up. We saved a bit of money but unfortunately our IRA is currently taking a beating. Part of the stimulus will go to try to figure out the problem with my 2005 Ranger pickup. If I wanted to buy a new detector I would go to my gun safe and take out the cash I have squirrelled away from my detecting finds.

Let's see if they ever get here.

I am adding a Vanquish 540 to backup my Equinox 800 and just have fun with. No, I don't think my wife would see the need for 3 detectors. She is not thrilled with my buying the 540 even though I sold my Simplex to pay for it. She was probably already earmarking the funds from the Simplex sale to something else that she wanted.
